I'm Writing a Book...

People have recently commended me on my writing skills, and they have all told me I should write a book right now. They said it should be based on my life (or the past few years) since I was through a lot. (too long to explain, see my myspace if you're interested) This will be a character portraying me, since it's a little weird for a 16-year old to write an autobiography.

So, can I please have any suggestions you have to actually write something successful? Anything, basically, from the building of the book?

Writing suggestions. Since this is basically based off of me, I already have all the ideas I need.

  1. Write some place where you are comfortable. If you need a quiet setting, then get one. If you need something playing in the background, turn something on.
  2. Double check your spelling and grammar, then check it again.
  3. Write ideas down as they come to you (make an outline). It's easy to get an idea in your head and tell yourself you'll write it down as your story develops only to end up forgetting the idea. Write all ideas down as they pop in your head. It's much better to have something written down and not use it than to want to use something but forget what it was.
  4. Allow someone you trust to read and review your work. You can either let them read it as you write it or you can wait until you are finished. However, you should allow someone read your work before you consider it finished. And make sure it is someone that will give you real feedback and not someone that will read it and call it good no matter what. You need someone that will tell you if some things can be explained better/differently, if certain parts don't make sense, and so on.

Most of those are common sense, but they are the best I can come up with unless I know a specific area that you need advice about.

Thank you for that advice. Since I am really serious about this, since I have no idea what I will do with my life, I want this to work, and for people to actually "Get into" my writing like a real writer does. From the looks of it (referring to your list) all I really have to look over is my setting, where I can write this. I guess the best way to do it is find the right type of song that actually gets me thinking about the subject i'm writing about.

This is a bit grade school, I'll admit, but when in doubt you can always refer to the old writer's checklist

haha. Haven't seen one of those in years... I guess it's good, though, to go back to basics, so things don't get too out of hand (or too complex)

Books won't be published unless they're memorable, and only the really memorable ones become popular. Ensure your story is exciting and memorable, not comparable to the great literary bore that is Charle's Dickens Great Expectations. Old literature is all well and good if it's exciting and offers a social commentary of their time, or otherwise however that piece of crap offers nothing.

Thank you for all the high aspirations. I am just writing this to show people I can write well, and if it does get very popular within school, or so, I may want to try actually going further with it. It'm just writing it to write it right now.

I hit a snag with the publisher that lasted for about 3 years. All the legal fees started piling up. Actually it was okay, though, because Donald Trump liked it so much that he paid off my legal fees and started a publishing company just for me! Then it went bankrupt.

Currently, Oprah's friend Gail, Martha Stewart, and the guy who was going to publish OJ Simpson's book, have shown interest.

Change the topic to computers and "Donald Trump" to "Bill Gates" and that could be a vintage post by a guy we (Purps, Cybrus, Feelgood, etc) knew named A-Dubb. No doubt.
