STAY HYPED!!!
This is a hot topic at another forum where I post, but I see no harm in creating a thread here. Who knows, maybe someone will benefit from this:

A lot of times, members register easy to guess passwords. Many of them justify their actions with something along the lines of "Who is ever going to guess "chicken" is my password anyway?" Those are usually the same people that eventually find themselves being the victim of password cracking. Now, if you are just a member of a forum then this isn't too big of a problem. However, it is a nasty habit to get into. If you have an easy to guess password for your user account, then what happens if you are ever promoted to forum moderator or forum admininstrator? Suddenly, your little problem becomes a major problem for the entire forum. And what about life outside of the internet? What if you use the same easy to guess habit when you are picking financial or home security passwords? Suddenly, you find yourself being very vunerable to attacks. So while it is somewhat petty to stress the importance of a secure password for an online forum member, it is a good idea to get yourself out of the habit of picking easy to guess passwords.

A few suggestions of my own:

  • Your password should never be shorter than 12 characters. The only exception would be if you are not allowed to use 12 characters, during which case you should use the maximum characters allowed.
  • Your password should not be a known word in the dictionary. You may think "chicken" is a hard password to crack, but it would honestly take less than 30 seconds for an experienced password cracker to crack that code.
  • Your password should be a combination of upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers, symbols, and "leet speak".
  • Your forum password should never be the same as your e-mail password. Lots of people tend to forget that if someone cracks into your email then all they would have to do is click the "forgot password" link and they'd have access to your account. Your email password should be as secure as any other password.
  • Do not use the same password on multiple forums. Sure, it may be hard to crack your password, but once the password is cracked then the cracker would have access to every account he knows you have.
That's all I have off the top of my head. However, I ask that you consider the following:

Also, you should consider the following:
PhranK of IF Support

Websites and forums can contain coding that steals your password, so they'd be able to break into any forum, website, or email account that they knew you used if you'd re-used that password.
That's actually a fairly common way that IF boards get cracked.

Now, if you're a member of 20 different IF boards and don't care too much about those member accounts, having different passwords for all of them would likely be excessive, but you should definitely use a separate password for all your administrator and moderator accounts, and any of the member passwords should be different from your passwords for your email accounts, system logins, etc.

And while writing down a forum password might not be a big risk for most, some people do have friends and family that are snoops or mischievous, or occasionally vindictive (I've seen quite a few boards trashed by "friends" after an argument or something), so it's best to just use a different method to remember it, such as the one I mentioned in that passwords topic.
It's also just not a good habit to get into.
Today it might be a password to a fairly meaningless forum, but tomorrow it might be your PayPal or bank account password or something, or an email account password which could be used to gain access to other accounts via a password recovery feature, and whether you have to worry about friends or family messing with your bank accounts and whatnot, you should still be concerned that burglars and identity thieves would, so it's best to develop good security habits instead of bad ones you'll have to break later.
