Alex Shelly interview

The leader of "Paparazzi Productions" in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, Alex Shelley, was one of the special guests on this week's live edition (08/07/06) of Monday Night Mayhem, which can be heard in streaming audio every week (and live from 7-9PM ET every Monday night) exclusively on The Monday Night Mayhem Radio Network (www.MondayNightMayhem.com, www.WrestlingMediaNetwork.com, www.ObsessedWithWrestling.com, www.Dory-Funk.com, & celebrating its 10th Anniversary, www.AudioWrestling.com  -- your official home of "The Spring Break Incident" Video-On-Demand, featuring Stuff Magazine's all-new fitness correspondent, the hottest member of this past season's edition of ABC's "Dancing With The Stars," the newest member of the Disney/Touchtone family, & former WWE Diva, Stacy Keibler).

The interview with this X-Division standout is now available to hear for FREE in Real Audio!

Here are some of the highlights from the interview, provided by the show's official transcriber/columnist, Oliver London.

While the anticipation is building until tonight's huge six-man tag-team match (Chris Sabin, Sonjay Dutt, & Jay Lethal vs. The Paparazzi) on TNA iMPACT (11PM ET/10PM CT on Spike TV), Alex Shelley stepped into The Mayhem squared circle for the first time in his career. Since joining up with "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash, Alex has definitely been a star on the rise inside the ring. He definitely brought his "A-game" to The Mayhem with The Big Mosh & Blade, which showed his creative skills outside of the ring are not to be ignored as well.

Alex was welcomed to the show, with the talk starting with the quick success of Alex's group, "Paparazzi Productions." Alex said “I wasn’t sure at the time but it has become something because they are allowed to be themselves,  Alex will be happy as long as Paparazzi allows him to showcase his personality“. Mosh & Blade talked about the rumors spreading around the internet of TNA possibly having a second hour of television. Alex did not even know that, but believes that Total Nonstop Action Wrestling should use one hour solely for the X-Division & the other hour for rest of the talent. "If this be the case, this could be great news for the company."

The interview quickly moved onto Shelley's "partner in crime," Kevin Nash & his thoughts on Nash's #1 Contender's Match for the X-Division Championship this Sunday night at Hard Justice against Chris Sabin. Shelley feels that "Big Sexy" is "ready to go," and despite past rumors of him not wanting to put over younger talent prior in WCW, he has no problems getting in the ring with the X-Division guys. "I never worked with Kevin in World Championship Wrestling, so I can’t possibly comment on that, but in TNA he works fine with me." The success that Nash has had in his career with the nWo & the Kliq is translating well for TNA now, as the casual fans that tune in and remember Kevin from those days have an immediate translation to something they followed beforehand, and can get some new followers for the company.

With Jeff Hardy's imminent return to World Wrestling Entertainment, Blade asked Alex his personal opinions of Jeff Hardy working in TNA -- and if he would ever be welcomed back into their locker room if he decided the WWE wasn't the place for him now. "Jeff Hardy was a pain in the @ss, so I could care less -- I care more about what I would be having for dinner than Jeff Hardy going back to the E." Shelley did concede that "The Charismatic Enigma" sold plenty of merchandise though, and was an asset to the company that way.

Mosh then asked Alex what would have to be his weirdest or most uncomfortable fan experience to date. Shelley explained that he has not had many --  “I don’t consider myself a star, but this one kid asked for my autograph, and I was like yeah sure kid, but he then wanted me to sign a copy of a psalm (Matthew) from the Bible." Alex didn’t want to be sacrilegious, so he signed the back, but did indeed feel that was very, very weird.

There were prior rumors floating around the internet of Alex not liking his new "Paparazzi Productions" T-Shirt, so The Mayhem gave Shelley the live mic & the opportunity to address the truth (or not) of these rumors. Alex was "surprised" when this all went down: "They didn’t ask me for ideas -- it was my shirt after all. I didn’t think orange was a good color, but you can’t argue with success, as it’s the hottest selling merchandise in TNA. I’m glad they took time to put merchandise out for me."

Blade & Mosh asked Alex whether or not he sees any problems currently between TNA & Ring Of Honor, or if based on Total Nonstop Action Wrestling wanting to expand its horizons, if he could see a rift developing down the line -- where talent would need to choose ROH or TNA. Shelley definitely sees a potential of that happening, as both companies are trying to grow and venture into newer markets/areas. He also gave The Mayhem a pretty bold statement with regards to his status with ROH -- "I'm done with Ring Of Honor." Alex does think the ROH Title vs. ROH Pure Title unification bout this Saturday in Liverpool, England will get a lot of fans buzzing & should be a fantastic match, but not a "Match Of The Year" candidate. "I do not believe in MOTY, as each fan has a different opinion of what they think is good or great."

Mosh also brought up TNA's first-ever Sunday night Pay-Per-View outside of the friendly confines of The Impact Zone in Orlando, FL -- "Bound For Glory" in Detroit, MI (Alex’s hometown) this October. Alex said that he is definitely looking forward to it. "I can probably run there for the show, as it is about five minutes away from where I live." With the success of last weekend's ticket sales & the autograph session at The Compuware Arena, he feels that now is definitely the time to move away from Orlando. "That market is tapped out completely -- it's becoming overkill." He wants to see TNA explore more shows in Philadelphia, and some events in New York City & Chicago.

Make sure you fans listen to this entire 40+ minute interview, which also includes: an update on his shoulder injury (and how much rehab he is currently going through), his takes on the new Extreme Championship Wrestling & its new talent -- such as CM Punk & "The Reject" Shannon Moore (and if he could see himself a part of it in the future & whether or not he/the TNA locker room sees them as competition), his thoughts on the phenomenon that is MySpace (including a hilarious story about meeting someone on there), & who he sees himself matching up against in the coming months ahead on TNA programming.

Former NWA World Heavyweight Champion & The Mayhem's National TNA PPV Correspondent, Dory Funk, Jr. also joined the show to preview the last TNA Pay-Per-View of the summer -- Hard Justice! I don't know WM, Shelly is a real good wrestler, Hardy can do some good spots and does daredevil type stuff but Shelly is a better pure wrestler than Hardy IMO.

WrestleView.com was made aware this evening that the interview recap posted earlier today featuring TNA's Alex Shelley on Monday Night Mayhem featuring Shelley's open opinion of Jeff Hardy were not direct quotes.

It appears some miscommunication took place when recapping Shelley's appearance on the show took place. Instead of Shelley referring to Jeff Hardy as a "pain in the ass" during the interview, he actually said it was a "pain the ass" to remove the body paint Hardy wore during matches.

Representatives for Monday Night Mayhem are expected to issue a statement about this later tonight.

Well there goes my thread.
