The Man. Any Questions?
This morning's paper held some shitty news. Not to sound callous, but we're glad these aren't people we know:

The Gainesville Sun Monday January 15
2006

Police: Two U.F. Students Raped

By Nathan Crabbe, Sun Staff Writer

Two University of Florida students were raped within hours of each other early Sunday in the student neighborhood north of campus, in what Gainesville police say were unrelated crimes.

The first victim told police she was raped at gunpoint during a home-invasion robbery. The second victim reported she was unconscious after a party when she awoke to being raped by an aquaintance. Both women are 21 years old.

The first crime happened between 4:15 and 5 a.m., said Sgt. Keith Kameg, Gainesville Police spokesman. He said a man wearing a ski mask broke into the woman's apartment and tied her up, then rummaged through her belongings before raping her at gunpoint.

"We have not had a home-invasion robbery like this in many years," he said.

Officers on Sunday scoured the student neighborhood, handing out fliers with a picture of the victim's green bed sheets. The bed sheets were stripped from a bed and taken from her home and might have been thrown in a trash can in the neighborhood, Kameg said. He said the sheets could hold forensic evidence. The fact they were taken shows the suspect "could be anything from a skilled criminal to someone who watches 'C.S.I.'," he said.

Police concentrated on the neighborhood between W. University Avenue and NW 8th Avenue, and NW 13th Street and NW 18th Street. The exact locations of the crimes aren't being released to protect the identities of the victims.

The second crime happened about 7:30 a.m. within 10 blocks of the first incident, according to police. At a home where a perty was being held, a woman reported she awoke to being raped. She pushed off her attacker and chased him off with a baseball bat, Kameg said.

Police have "significant leads" that the suspect left town and headed home to Central Florida, he said.

Detectives and uniformed officers fanned out through the neighborhood many people refer to as the "student ghetto", passing out fliers and searching for clues. They are looking for information on both crimes.

"We want them solved as quickly as possible," Kameg said.

In the home invasion, police are looking for the sheets as well as any information on suspicious activity in the neighborhood. The suspect is described as a black man, 5-feet, 6-inches to 6-feet tall with an average build and medium-to-dark skin.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Jorge Campos at 334-2489.

In the second crime, police have an idea of the suspect's identity. Anyone with aditional information can call Detective Mike Douglas at 334-2349.

Anyone wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 372-STOP.

Kameg said residents should be sure to lock their doors and windows and turn on outside lights at night. Students living in the neighborhood said they will definitely heed those warnings.

Santa Fe Community College student Nada Haddad, 20, said she had been staying with a friend in the neighborhood and is now worried about leaving her alone. She said she'd advise her friend to keep her doors and windows locked and a can of mace beside the bed.

"It makes me nervous. It really scares me," she said.

Wonderful world we live in, isn't it?

The guy who did the girl while she was asleep won't see any jail time. If you claim you were passed out drunk how can you convince a jury that someone raped you?

Christ, it's still going on!

The paper just arrived and - guess what? - we've got yet another violent rape in Gainesville.

I'll post the article this afternoon (I don't feel like typing it out right now), but here's the generals:

A woman was raped at gunpoint by a man wearing a ski mask early Tuesday morning (sound familiar?). This one was walking her dog (when they gotta go, they gotta go) outside her apartment off Archer Road when she was attacked.

The attacks are moving west; that means they're coming in my direction.

Obviously not.

If they stick to nighttime, everything's okay. But, this one was early morning.

The trouble I have is the fact that Alicia and I do NOT have classes at the same times. Two days a week this semester, she's here alone for about 3 hours.

Buy her a gun. Then when she sees what she believes is a suspicious man - BAM! Brains all over the sidewalk.

Seriously though, I offer the standard thoughts. These guys are fucktards, as if you would, blah blah blah. It happens unfortunately, it happened across the road from us once and we live in a pretty crimeless neighbourhood. I guess you can be thankful that they don't kill 'em once they're done.

Did you know that most rapist rape not for sexual pleasure, but because they get off on having complete control of the situation? It's a power thing, not a sexual thing. Or so says all the TV shows I watch.

If you are worried about your girlfriend, then maybe you should consider having her stay with a friend until the serial rapist is caught? Or maybe you could have a friend stay with her? Or at the very least, get a big, vicious dog that is all lovable to you and her, but vicious to any intruder.

Or a gun! I've heard that stuff about rape being about power too, but I just find it hard to believe. If you castrate a rapist and put him out into society, do you think he'll rape anymore? I mean, I'm sure part of it's very true about the power and whatever, but far too many people say that the only reason why people rape is because they like to exert power. That just doesn't seem right to me. If you didn't let any guy in the world have consensual sex anymore due to all women suddenly hating men (or something), I think that there'd be a massive increase in rape cases. Iuno, beats me.

I agree. I think that saying that it's a means to get off on control is overanalyzing a fairly simple situation. Sure that may be the case for some but I think for the most part the guys probably just no gettin any. I think it's more closesly related to human nature than many give it credit for. Just think, back in the caveman days they would just drag a women back to their lair and essentially rape them. Many of the same situations happened throughout history.

The thing that is unique about the time we live in is that women are treated more equally than they have ever been in the history of the world. Which means that guys have to earn it. Some just don't want to and are too weak minded to control their natural tendencies.

I'm not expert, not by any stretch, but according to the tv shows I watch (and I don't vouch for their accuracy), the male most likely would continue to rape, but use an object instead of his penis. Castration, chemical castration at least, doesn't prevent the urge or desires, it just prevents the um...plumbing from working. Or so says the TV shows I've watched.
