Both combatants for the ECW World Title at Vengeance: Night of Champions hold each other in the highest regard.

Former World Heavyweight Champion Chris Benoit watched CM Punk from afar when he was previously part of the SmackDown roster.

“I’ve been watching CM Punk for a long time,” Benoit told WWE.com, “I think he’s a very talented individual – definitely one of the Superstars of the future. I think he’s going to become one of the company leaders in the years to come.”

Punk is also very familiar with the Rabid Wolverine’s work in the ring – and maybe a bit star struck as well to be facing such a touted veteran.

“I definitely say that I would be probably overwhelmed just wrestling for a title, let alone a World Championship. But I’m even more overwhelmed and taken aback that it’s against Chris Benoit – somebody that I respect and admire,” Punk said.  “[Benoit’s] a top caliber athlete in the world, not just in wrestling, and it will be my privilege to wrestle him for the ECW title.”

When Punk and Benoit square off to fill the vacant championship, it will write a new chapter in ECW history. Punk said that he’d be honored to join the lineage of great champions to hold that title high.

“Guys like Tazz, Masato Tanaka, Rob Van Dam, Tommy Dreamer, Sandman … these are all guys that I work with and I’m following in their footsteps being one of the misfits of wrestling,” Punk said, referring to brand’s hardcore history. “I hope I can do them all proud.”

Benoit knows the history of the title well. He was part of ECW’s legacy, competing in the promotion in 1994 and 1995, winning the ECW Tag Team Championship with partner Dean Malenko.  But he finds it ironic that now, being recently drafted to ECW, some in the locker room look at the veteran ring tactician as “the new kid on the block.”

“I kind of snicker at that because I’m one of the originals of ECW,” Benoit said. “I think that I’m getting their respect though what I’m doing in the ring. I certainly believe I got Elijah’s respect [on ECW on Sci Fi] with what I did and I’m very proud of my victory.”

Punk respects the arsenal of holds that Benoit possesses. But he said got a game plan of his own to take down the Rabid Wolverine, looking for that one moment of weakness that he can capitalize on.

“I think it could come down to a couple of very simple maneuvers … we both like to keep it on the mat, but we can fly when we need to,” Punk explained. “I’m definitely lacking in the experience category, but I do have a few tricks up my sleeve, and I can be just as nasty as Chris Benoit.

“Not to spoil the game plan or to let Chris know what I’m doing, I not only intend to hang with [Benoit,] I intend to roll him over and just run right through him to become the ECW World Champion. I know that it’s not going to be easy, but, you know, if I went in thinking anything less than ‘I’m going to beat him,’ then I don’t have any chance in the world.”

The veteran is ready for the Straightedged Superstar’s assault this Sunday, and has his years of experience to fall back on as the pair battle for the ECW World Title.

“It’s going to be somewhat of a chess match. I’ve got a lot of respect for his abilities and talent. He does a lot of different types of martial arts,” Benoit said. “However, when I step into that ring I’m going to give him hell, bring my all, and show him why I’m the best damn technical wrestler in the business today.”

For me, this is one of the most anticipated matches in the WWE in recent memory. I don't usually care about the John Cenas or Bobby Lashleys that the WWE loves to push, but Benoit vs Punk makes me salivate. It could be so great. It could be the show stealer of the ppv. It will probably make me buy the first WWE ppv since Royal Rumble. But, will the WWE give it to us...right down the middle? Will we get to see Benoit vs Punk in a 30 min or so match up with a clean winner? Or do we have a Burke/Monty Brown run in to expect? Will the WWE ruin the match? I hope not, but you never know. Am I the only one that thinks this is the best match in the WWE for some time? What's everyone's thoughts on Benoit vs Punk?

It's a fabulous new day, yes it is!
It won't last more than 17 minutes. I'm also expecting it to be a good match. I'd like to see Benoit with the title rather than CM Punk at the time being.

I agree with that. I said earlier that it's not time yet for Punk to beat Benoit for the title. The best thing would be for Benoit to win, then build up Punk to eventually take the title from Benoit, making him an even bigger star in the process.

I really can't see it going too long. Since there are 9 different matches on the card, they really are tight on time. If every match was the same length, it would come in around 17-18 minutes; and we know that some matches will go longer than others, even pushing that time back more. The CW, Women's, and Tag matches will probably be shorter, while the title matches will be longer, of course, with the 5-man match being the longest.

So even if we want to, I don't think they'll get enough time to do their thing.

Hopefully they'll allow Benoit and Punk to have a series of matches and give them more room to breathe on a PPV with fewer matches booked.

It'll probably be 15 minutes tops. The WWE Title will definitely be the longest match.

I see Benoit winning this match.

I think WWE's going to let these two go at it for a while. I'm pretty sure they know how big this match means to the fans. I wouldn't be surprised if it was more than twenty minutes. It has ***** written all over it.

I will be surprised as hell. Even the Angle/Benoit classic at the Royal Rumble went less than 20 minutes. I just don't see it happening on a packed card.

If worked correctly, Benoit vs Punk will be the best match for years to come. I am even pleased with the fact that it is happening never mind getting to see it!

Money, money, yeah, yeah!
15 minutes, nothing more. WWE is going to fuck this match up somehow.

Damn straight. You know the people who are expecting it to be the greatest match ever will be the ones most disappointed come Monday morning. "Oh, that match sucked! It didn't even last 20 minutes!"

Length doesn't matter. It is the quality that counts.

BURN IT DOOOWWNNNNNNNN!
We know this match won't get a lot of time, it'd be lucky to get 20 minutes. But I think Benoit and Punk are able to put on a great match in the allotted time. Benoit should get the win and the belt. Why? Because it's Benoit for one (lol), he's over with the crowd, he's an ECW original (if that means anything now), for his "depush" on SD!; Yes he won the US Title, but they didn't do anything useful with him until MVP came along and was deemed ready; And if we want to see this feud with Punk to continue, it's best to let the younger guy chase the veteran in this case.

I know some of you are saying "Punk is already the most over guy on the brand, there's no reason NOT to have him win the brand's title." Well you're half right, but Benoit is over just as much as he is, and for the sake of keeping this potential feud alive (because we know this one match won't satisfy us lol) Benoit should get the nod in this case.

Of course this is only my opinion...

I will find you.
I think it'll be around 15 minutes, clean finish, and Benoit will win it. :P

Putting the title on Benoit is a great idea for now, but did either Benoit or Punk "kill" Mcmahon? :smoke:

Eh....its WWE its a dream match up that will be destroyed by the WWE I feel that this match will go around 15 minutes maybe and you will have interference it will not be a clean win ...I hope I am wrong and its give 20+ minutes and clean but I have very much lost all interest in WWE PPV and cant pay to watch them for fear that I will waste my money again

If this match is given the time it could be match of the night and go on to be maybe match of the year
