There are other options, I'm sure of it, but of the two options listed above, which do you think produces the better grilled food? Personally, I gotta go with charcoal. I think it adds a nice subtle flavor to the meat which is what partly separates grilled food from regular cooked food. You just don't get that added dimension of flavor with gas grills. |

I don't debate. I'm always right.

Charcoal all the way. Some people consider it a hassle. But...I think it's fun to BBQ on charcoal. Plus..The flavor is better. I mean...If you are going to take the time to BBQ, it should at least taste different than regular grilled food. |

What type of charcoal do you use? Do you use the briquets (those black squares that you just light) or do you use chunks of wood (real charcoal)? I use the chunks myself. I've always liked the chunk stuff better, but after seeing an episode of "Dirty Jobs" and seeing how charcoal is made, then I know for a fact that I'll never use briquets. |

I use briquets. I'm kinda scared to ask how they are made. |

It's not really bad. I'll simplify the process, but feel free to look it up or watch the episode of "Dirty Jobs" if you wish. Basically, they take hardwood (not softwood) and chop it up. They place those pieces in a metal box and burn it over low heat. That burns out the stuff in wood that you don't want to flavor your food while leaving the wood black (charcoal's color), yet still leaves enough wood to burn. They then move that burned wood to a machine that further chops the bigger pieces of wood into chunks. Those chunks are then bagged and sold as chunk charcoal. Pretty straightforward. Briquets are made from the dust left behind during the chunk process. As the chunks are chopped up and moved down the line the fine dust (which is basically just black ash) falls off them and onto the floor. When the dust gets thick enough, they sweep it up, add chemicals to make the dust combine, shape it, bag it, and sell it. If you like briquets, then by all mean use them. Personally, I think chunk charcoal is more natural, more flavorful, and just as cheap. There may be a slight price difference, but nothing major. |

It's not that I prefer briquets over the chunk type. It just that I haven't tried the chunk type. Actually. I've never even seen them in my area. Or, at least didn't notice. I may try them (if I can find them) this weekend. |

If you do try them, then you'll probably want to buy a chimney starter. All you have to do is load the chunks in it, put a page of crumbled newspaper under it (laced with a squirt of two of vegetable oil), light the paper, and walk away for about 10 minutes. Some people just put the chunks in their grill and pour on lighter fluid, but I don't see why on earth you'd ever want to. Also, you may want to remember that chunk charcoal tends to burn hotter than briquet charcoal. Don't burn your food.

The Man. Any Questions?

Charcoal, by far. I don't like the gassy taste of the propane burgers. |

That's how I was able to tell the difference. I've had the briquet type of charcoal, and I've had the Propane, and Charcoal definitely tastes better. But I've had a lot of propane over the years, from family gatherings and such, and I never found a problem with it at all. |
