I was about to re-read that one once I got finished with... Birth of a Dynasty: Behind the Pinstripes with the New York Yankees by Joel Sherman. I ordered that book in August 2008, had about 50 pages read by February 2009, and just recently added 15 pages to make it 65 in over a year and a half. |

The last book I read was The Hobbit, which I found to be a really good read.. and I've since ordered the set of 4 books (Hobbit + LOTR trilogy) even though I already own The Hobbit, since it was actually cheaper than buying the LOTR trilogy separate. I've heard the LOTR trilogy is slightly harder to read than The Hobbit (due to the language used), since I understand that The Hobbit was written for Tolkien's children and the LOTR trilogy was more adult orientated. But I don't imagine it will be all that more difficult. I've also ordered The Silmarillion to read once I've finished the LOTR trilogy. On top of that I have George R. R. Martin's "Dreamsongs: A RRetrospective", which is a good 1100 pages. I'm currently reading The Further Adventures Of An Idiot Abroad.. not enjoying it as much as the first companion book from Series 1, but it's still good going so far. I personally go through periods where I read loads, and then periods where I read nothing. It more or less boils down to having material to read though, I'm pretty picky about what I read.. I don't like to buy a book unless I know it's going to be good. With TV or movies you can watch an episode or the first half an hour and know whether it's going to be good or not, but for books you usually have to spend a good few hours on it before you can fully get an idea on whether you like it or not. Seems like too much of an investment to me. |

STAY HYPED!!!

I read the Hobbit in December/January. It didn't take me 2 months to read the book, but I bought the Hobbit + LOTR set right after the Christmas sales and started reading at the end of December and finished sometime in January. It was a very fun book to read. I have since tried to read the LOTR books, but I just cannot get into them. It's not that the book is harder to read (at least not yet), but it's kind of boring at the beginning. I mean, if you love to read about the 4 hobbits then it's great. But he goes into so much detail about everything around them that it is boring to me at the start. I mean, I am 155 pages into the book and they are still walking through the woods. They haven't even made it to the Prancing Pony yet...so think about how quickly we got there in the movie and you'll see how much explaining I'm reading through to get there. |

I kind of like really descriptive books, it can really help to immerse you into the world you're reading about when done right.. I haven't read any of the LOTR at all so far so I can't really comment yet. But I've read the entire A Song Of Ice And Fire series so far and they have exactly that quality about them, lots and lots of description and I REALLY enjoyed those books. George R.R. Martin is one of the reasons I have even bothered to pick up any of Tolkien's work. Purely based on the fact that he's referred to as the American Tolkien. Well that, and the fact that I liked the LOTR films.. but yeah. |

I'm 150 pages into The Fellowship Of The Ring now and I'm still just on the beginning of The Hobbit's journey, much like you said, Cy. However, I am finding it rather enjoyable.. they've come across a few obstacles and what not along the way to break up "the walking" part of it. I am literally just up to where they're about to leave the Old Forest, I think. I have noticed a lot that they have missed out.. for example Old Man Willow, Tom Bombadil and Goldberry were cut entirely from the film? I'm not entirely sure why, as it seems to be the first major milestone in the hobbit's journey. I shall update when I progress further anywho. |

I'm currently reading Blood Meridian or the Evening Redness in the West by Cormac McCarthy. It's absolutely incredible. I just wish I wasn't taking so long to get through the book. Work and video games are to blame. |
