As many of my TV watcher buddies know, there are really two distinct types of shows: Broadcast shows, and Cable shows. Mainly, the Broadcast shows work hard to be cutting-edge, while trying to fit a show into 20-40 minute slots. They have to come up with many shows, ideas, and storylines for usually 18-24 episodes, and if the ratings go south, that show is canned. Cable shows are really cutting-edge without trying to be. Many cable channels, such as FX or TNT, have shows that really aren't as fast-paced as Broadcast shows, yet they come in with stuff you can't normally do on your basic channels. (simulated sex and using the "s" word are only two things) And their shows usually run longer than 40 minutes, especially when they have "limited commercial interruption." But also, they usually have shorter seasons and don't run for 10 months of the year like Broadcast shows do. So which types of shows do you prefer? Broadcast (ABC, FOX, NBC, CBS, etc.) or Cable shows? (TNT, FX, USA Network, and dare I say TBS) I know I've always watched Broadcast or "network" shows, but over the past year, I have started to watch practically any FX show and enjoyed it a lot. Rescue Me, The Riches, (which I hope comes out on DVD) and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia are examples of some of the shows I have caught on to. |

I haven't watched any broadcast show (unless you count SmackDown!) regularly since 2000. Since then, it's all been cable (well, mostly satellite but same thing). All the shows I ever look forward to are on cable channels. The broadcast shows always have an over-commercialized and over-hyped feel to them that just ruins it for me. |

I'm pretty much 50/50 right now. I love shows like Battlestar Galatica, Eureka, The Shield, Psyche all on cable. But I also like Smallville, Supernatural, LOST, Bionic Woman, Chuck, etc all on braodcast. As long as the writing is good, I'll watch. I hate most reality type shows, with a couple of exceptions like Storm Chasers and Ghost Hunters (I guess its reality style). I have no real preference. |
