Fans of The X-Files no longer have to rely on internet rumours to seek the truth about a sequel to the 1998 movie based on the popular TV series.

On Wednesday, Fox announced production will start December 10 on the sequel, which reunites the show's stars, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. The studio also picked July 25 as the US release date.

Series creator Chris Carter will direct the still-untitled film. Carter also co-wrote the screenplay with X-Files veteran Frank Spotnitz. The duo also are producing. Shooting will take place in Vancouver.

The studio is staying little about the film's story line. All that is being revealed is that it is a "supernatural thriller" and that the movie will take the complicated relationship between FBI agents Fox Mulder (Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Anderson) in unexpected directions as Mulder continues on his quest for the truth and Scully remains inextricably tied to her partner's pursuits.

The July 25 release date would put X-Files up against Step Brothers, a comedy starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, and an untitled comedy starring Ice Cube.

Fox's X-Files ran for nine seasons, ending in 2002. The first feature film, produced by Carter and co-written with Spotnitz, grossed $US187 million worldwide.

Did they ever really explain what happened to Fox's sister?

If it's taking place after the series ended, then I really wanna know how/if they handle the whole "end of the world is near" thing. They can't exactly act like that means little to them.

Did you ever watch the Highlander movies? Each one basically ignored what happened in the last movie and TV series.

Oh, yeah. I watched them. I love the first one and I really enjoy the one where he battles Kane (the illusion guy).

Nothing is as bad as Highlander II, though. I remember when I first saw that. I had rented Highlander right before it (first time seeing it) and I loved it so I definately wanted to see the second. When I did, I was completely confused. They changed the story, Sean Connery was alive again, they were aliens now, e.t.c. I had no idea what was going on. Then after it, it's as if it never happened at all.

It's like Kane the wrestler's backstory put into movies. :-/

Well the series finished in what...2002 or so and the world was meant to end in 2012, so they have a bit of time I guess.

And yeah, they explained what happened to his sister in season 7 (Closure/Sein Und Zeit) but I can't remember exactly what they said.

It's a fabulous new day, yes it is!
Didn't Mulder and Scully escaped to somewhere at the south during the final episode? I remember I only bothered to watch that X-Files episode since it was the last episode ever. I never got into the show, though.

Watch the Renegade version. It was a Directors recut where they edited out the entire storyline of the Planet Ziest.

I believe they were in New Mexico to confront the Cigarette Smoking Man about the truth (aliens will be coming in 2012 and it's end game for us). I don't remember much about the episode other than the CSM gets killed when the site is attacked by some government baddies, though Mulder and Scully escape.

I just read about that on Wikipedia. I went and read up Highlander II after my last post. It's eve worse than I remember.

Next time I'm in the video store, I'll see if they have it (though that's doubtful). I don't want to straight out buy it since the first version was crap.

But they already knew of the plans to colonise (since like...season 3), and Mulder found out the exact date in the second last episode, so that mustn't have been the reason they went to see him. Actually...maybe they just wanted confirmation. I forget.

It's better than the 1st version and you can buy it cheap. Probably cost as much to rent as it would to buy.

According to the Wikipedia article on the last episode:

Quote:

Fox Mulder finds himself incarcerated by the US Marines under controversial circumstances. He has been arrested for breaking into a military bunker. Upon hearing that he has resurfaced, and in such a dire manner, Scully and Skinner immediately travel to Virginia to see him. They find out that he had in fact made the incursion, but he wants his truth for doing so to be heard. He had been seeking information on alien technology, and had allegedly killed Knowle Rohrer. (We find out that Rohrer was a former Marine Corps friend of Doggett's, but had been irrevocably turned into a enemy Super Soldier.) While Mulder languishes in military captivity, he receives mysterious visits from phantoms of his past. Meanwhile, Scully and Skinner go to great lengths to get him released, but are unsuccessful.

Mulder's fate is ultimately made the subject of a military tribunal. At the outset, it appears he will be the hopeless victim of a show trial not in his favor.

Skinner takes Mulder's defense, while Scully, Reyes, Doggett, Marita Covarrubias, Gibson Praise and Jeffrey Spender take the stand. Although they ultimately prove his case - when Scully discovers that the body is not that of Knowle Rohrer - their testimony is overruled and Mulder is sentenced to death.

With the unexpected help of Deputy Director Kersh, the group breaks Mulder out, and he and Scully drive off. Despite being told to get out of the country, Mulder instead drives to New Mexico. Doggett and Reyes return to find their office emptied, suggesting that the X-Files have been closed down for a third time. Skinner finds himself being called in for a meeting with Kersh and the Toothpick Man, and we see him for the last time as the door closes behind him. Gibson warns Doggett and Reyes that Mulder is in danger.

In New Mexico, Scully and Mulder arrive at a pueblo where a dying Cigarette Smoking Man is hiding out to survive the colonization - an event that will happen on December 22, 2012. This corresponds to a significant date in the Mayan Calendar - perhaps the end of the world. Outside, Reyes and Doggett face off against Knowle Rohrer, who has been sent to kill Mulder and the Smoking Man. The pueblo is filled with magnetite, which kills Rohrer as he advances on Doggett and Reyes. Switching cars with Mulder and Scully, the agents drive off. Black helicopters destroy the pueblo - and the Smoking Man, within - before giving chase to the wrong car and we last see Doggett and Reyes driving off with them in pursuit.

In a hotel room in New Mexico, Mulder and Scully prepare for bed and talk. Their final words:

SCULLY: You've always said that you want to believe. But believe in what, Mulder? If this is the truth that you've been looking for, then what is left to believe in?

MULDER: I want to believe that the dead are not lost to us. That they speak to us as part of something greater than us – greater than any alien force. And if you and I are powerless now, I want to believe that if we listen to what's speaking, it can give us the power to save ourselves.

SCULLY: Then we believe the same thing.

MULDER: Maybe there's hope.

Yeah, I'm still not sure why they went to see the CSM. :-/

No, I seriously don't remember why they went to see the CSM.

On a side note, I want to say that I never enjoyed the episodes after Mulder became a character that only made the occasional appearence very much. Mulder is the most interesting while Reyes and Doggett just weren't, I thought.

It looked sarcastic with the smiley is all. :)

Anyway, I agree about Mulder. He and Scully equally were my favourite characters (same for everyone), so naturally the show kinda declined after he left. Scully and Skinner did well to pick up the pieces and kinda function as a team, and during season 8 when it was those two, Dogget and the occasional appearance by Mulder the show was quite enjoyable. However after Mulder left for good in season 9 and Scully made only brief appearances in every episode, I thought the show kinda slipped in quality. Reyes and Doggett were a pretty awful team, mainly because Reyes just pissed me off.
