DVD Recorder Help

STAY HYPED!!!
I replaced my VCR with a DVD-Recorder. For some reason, it keeps going back to "initial set up" almost every time I turn it off. I don't understand why. I can program the DVD-Recorder to record something, and I miss the program because the thing is resetting itself. I turn the thing back on and I have to re-do the "Initial Set up" all over again. Does anyone have a DVD-Recorder? Maybe you can tell me what I'm doing wrong? Because I'm thinking very seriously about taking the damn thing back and forgetting about it.

Don't turn the system off when you want to record something?

What brand is it? I've had two DVD recorders, and have worked with another, and none of them describe what you're talking about.

You have to turn the unit off in order for pre-set recordings to work. :squint:

I haven't worked with Magnavox. I've used Sony, and a Radio Shack-brand, and neither of them have had issues like you said. Have you tried recording manually?

So you turn the DVD recorder off, when you want to record something?

I don't see the logic because it obviousl won't work while on standby.

Dude.

I have a DVD recorder and I never switch it off and believe it or not... it records WHEN NOT on standby.

Once again, yes, you have to turn it off in order for pre-set recordings to work. I'm beginning to think you have never operated a VCR or anything. Either that or this is one of those oddball non-american differences between countries. :weirdo:

I did press the record button when SD! came on last night and pressed the record button a few more times to manually set it to record for 2 hours. I did not have to go through the initial set-up process again. I also hit the record button this morning to finish record a movie I was watching before I went to sleep. I haven't checked to the disc yet though, so I don't know if the initial set-up procedure is waiting for me or not. I think it only pops up when I make a pre-setting. :ohdear:

Edit: I just checked the disc and the initial settings popped back up again. I fucking hate this machine!

Oh, so it's not to record?

It seemed like you were trying to record with the system off, but the initial set up shouldnot reset unless you don't confirm the settings...

Oh, so it's not to record?

When you want to record a program you put a timer on, (a.k.a. if you want to record something at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, and set it that way) you have to shut the recorder off in order for it to record. How hard is that to understand?

But I seriously don't know. I'm assuming you performed the initial set-up... initially, so if that's the case, there should be no reason it keeps popping up. Did you try unplugging it and plugging it back in, and all that good stuff to reset it?

I've performed the initial set-up like 10 times already. I have to do it each time because my clock and recording speed reset itself. I did unplug everything before I went to work last night. I came home and, oddly enough, didn't have to go through the initial set-up process again when I plugged it back up. Then I programmed it to record a show while I slept. When I woke up, I checked it and the initial set-up was right there waiting for me.

I saved the box (and receipt). On the box, they have a big "STOP!" and a bunch of pretty words followed by a customer service number. I'm calling that number in the morning. If they cannot help me, then I'm just going to take it back and get my money back. What good does a DVD-R do me if I cannot record more than one show? If I had a second show programmed into the machine, it would have been erased when it back into the initial set-up...again.

Every VCR I've ever used has had to be on stand-by for it to record. I think you're just mental in the head Luke.

It sounds to me like you either missed a step in the set up or you didn't hit the right thing at the end to save your set up.

I have never "finalized" my DVD that I'm recording on. I am sure you only need to finalize it if you plan on playing the disc on a different DVD player. I wonder if that's what's causing it? :ponder:

I'm not sure what happens to the disc when you finalize it. If it means I'm not able to record on it anymore, then I don't think I want to do it.

Finalizing it does mean that you can not record anymore on it. It also makes it so it will play in other DVD drives besides your DVD Recorder.

But of course, Finalizing your disc has nothing to do with actually recording on them. Are you sure you have the right disks? Some Recorders still don't take DVD+R formats. Of course, I don't know what kind of disks you have, so that point is kind of moot.

The discs have no bearing at all on the Recorder showing the initial set up menu all the time. Somewhere he has missed a step or has failed to end the session properly.

Yes, my discs are compatible with the DVD-R.

I don't really know if not completing the set-up is to blame. It all depends. If all he's doing is timer recording, then it could be. But if he's tried to record on the spot and it still comes up, then completing the set-up really doesn't make a difference.

But I've completed the set up multiple times. I've altered the settings on every page that comes up in the initial set up page process. I still think my best option is to call that number on the box. It's just I don't have a phone so I have to wait for someone with a cell comes over to visit.

In the instrusctions, does it tell you how to end the session when you finish the set up? It just seems to me like the info isn't getting stored in the DVD recorder.

The initial set up works in stages (stating the obvious, I know). Once you complete one stage, you press the "OK" button to confirm that page setting and go the next stage. Once you reach the final page, you press the "OK" button and the set up page just pops off screen.

I just had to go through the initial setting yet again so it is still fresh in my mind:

Step One: Setting Language.
Highlight English and press OK

Step Two: Preset Channels
Allow the machine to go through and select the working channels. Since I have my satellite hooked up, only the one station works.

Step Three: Set Clock
I set the current date and time, then press ok

That's the end of initial set up.

I went to take the DVD-R back last night. Walmart is open 24 hours a day so I assumed returns were accepted 24 hours a day. Returns aren't accepted after 10 p.m., so I had to bring it back with me. I hooked it back up and it has been working fine for me since then. I still expect to see "Initial Set-Up" every time I turn it on, but thus far it hasn't happened. Knock on wood that I didn't just jinx myself. :crossfingers:
