WWE breaks all ties with OVW

World Wrestling Entertainment has severed all ties with Ohio Valley Wrestling. Effective immediately, OVW will no longer be a WWE developmental territory. Here are the details:

-- A meeting was held today with all contracted developmental talent. WWE's John Laurinaitis and Ty Baily made the announcement that all of the contracted wrestlers training at OVW there would be heading to Florida Championship Wrestling - which is now WWE's only developmental territory.

-- WWE wants all of their developmental talent in one place. From a logistical standpoint, it didn't make business sense to have their developmental talent in Kentucky, specially since so many WWE employees live in Florida.

- Talent was told that there will be no releases stemming from OVW shutting down and that they will all be relocated to Tampa after finishing a few more weeks in OVW.

- Talent was told the trainers in FCW would be Tom Prichard, Steve Keirn and former WWE star Billy Kidman

- FCW is slated to run its first official TV taping later this month and there have been plans in place to run a regular schedule of live events in Florida.

The move had been suspected for some time as the amount of contracted talents working in Louisville had dwindled greatly in the last year and morale in OVW overall had fallen. Over the years, OVW has groomed a number of WWE's biggest stars, including Brock Lesnar, Batista, John Cena and Randy Orton, among others.

And two years from now, they'll be moving to another developmental league when FCW's overall morale is low. But, of course, not before they have FCW's video library under their ownership. Which they will do nothing with, of course.

Maybe they see Florida as more of a way to bring in others locally, say from FIP?

OVW I thought was going to be around, or atleast stay part of WWE while their newest one would fold up.

Shame to see a place that built up the ones that are common with fans to go but I guess WWE used OVW them to bring in those guys and wave bye bye.

Somewhat like they do with the current ECW product. Build up wrestlers and move them to one of the other brands.

I'm surprised they still even want it around.

WWE® To Cease Affiliation With Ohio Valley Wrestling
February 7, 2008

World Wrestling Entertainment® announced today that Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) will no longer be affiliated with World Wrestling Entertainment as an official developmental territory, making Florida Championship Wrestling™ (FCW™) WWE’s official development training facility for talent around the globe.

“Ohio Valley Wrestling has been a tremendous partner with World Wrestling Entertainment through the years, and we thank them for their work in developing many of today’s WWE Superstars,” said John Laurinaitis, Senior Vice President of Talent Relations. “We look forward to Florida Championship Wrestling playing host to the next generation of WWE Superstars recruited from around the world.”

Last November, WWE announced the formation of Florida Championship Wrestling, a new training center for future WWE Superstars. The facility has four wrestling rings and approximately 35 contracted athletes, with plans to increase that number to more than 70 in the near future. The facility is now fully operational, as WWE undertook large-scale renovations to FCW in order to accommodate its training needs. The finished training facility is more than 10,000 square feet, including an arena that will seat nearly 300 fans. The new training facility will also host a weekly show in front of a live audience, to be broadcast for regional television.

FCW is owned and operated by Steve Keirn, a former professional wrestler and producer for WWE. WWE trainer Tom Prichard oversees all talent training at the facility.

Stand Back! There's a Hurricane Coming Through
I thought they had already stopped using OV as a territory about the same time they dropped Deep South...

Or poach on TNA talent who's willing to hop over.

I think we were talking about it last year that there was a rumor they were going to do that but then it didn't happen.

Yeah that could be the case but TNA has something that seems a bit overwhelming from WWE, which is a lighter schedule.

Though they are adding more house dates but it's still not as hectic I don't think as WWE's.

This doesn't affect my watching of the WWE, so I really don't care at all. The only thing that bothers me, because he seemed like such a nice guy, is that they released Al Snow.

No he remained a trainer. He just wasn't part of the active roster.

Regarding an earlier report where many readers have asked why CM Punk is appearing at tonight’s Ohio Valley Wrestling TV tapings, tonight will be the final OVW TV taping involving WWE talent. After tonight, contracted WWE talent will no longer be working with the company. There is an article in today’s Courier-Journal out of Louisville, Kentucky detailing the decision for OVW to remain open despite losing their WWE affiliation which you can read at this link.

Apparently an earlier report was given somewhere.

The final Ohio Valley Wrestling television tapings involving WWE talent were held last night in Louisville, Kentucky. All talents under WWE contracts that still held titles in the promotion dropped them last night. The taping concluded with former ECW Champion CM Punk giving an emotional speech to the fans in attendance. On-screen WWE talent that worked the event included WWE Women’s Champion Beth Phoenix, Armando Estrada, Elijah Burke, Domino, Paul Burchill, and Katie Lea.

If I find the video I'll post it cause I'd like to see what he said.

According to an announcement on Ohio Valley Wrestling’s official website linking to a listing on the Six Flags website, OVW will continue their summer shows at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom again this summer. Apparently WWE will still supply talent for the shows.

It's a fabulous new day, yes it is!

- WWE has told superstars that have asked that they can still work shows for Ohio Valley Wrestling on their days off. However WWE will not compensate them for appearing.
