MyNetworkTV CROWNS WWE ITS NEW PROGRAMMING CHAMP

Network Is the Exclusive Prime-Time Broadcast Home of “WWE® SmackDown®” Beginning Fall 2008

NEW YORK – MyNetworkTV and World Wrestling Entertainment® (WWE) have announced a new broadcast television home for “WWE SmackDown,” scheduled to debut in Fall 2008. The announcement was jointly made by MyNetworkTV President, Greg Meidel and WWE Chairman of the Board Vincent K. McMahon.

In making the announcement, Meidel stated, “The momentum at MyNetworkTV continues with this major acquisition. We have demonstrated tremendous growth and this partnership with WWE, the premier sports entertainment franchise in the world is a perfect fit for our viewers, advertisers and affiliates.”

The two-hour television program will be presented weekly on MyNetworkTV. “WWE SmackDown” will feature a star-studded cast of WWE Superstars, including Edge®, Rey Mysterio®, Batista®, MVP™, Kane® and Undertaker®, as well as present all the action, excitement, drama and great athleticism that have made it for nine years one of the most popular programs among males on broadcast television, and one of the top ten English language prime time programs among Hispanic households.

WWE Chairman Vince McMahon added, “We are excited to add MyNetworkTV and its television affiliates to our family of global network partners. We have an unmatched record of delivering ratings success to each and every network partner we’ve worked with in our long and storied history. We fully intend to bring that same level of success to MyNetworkTV.”

So they are basically going back to where they were before.

I think it's a good deal. Using a NASCAR analogy, Toyota absolutely sucked last year. Joe Gibbs racing, one of the top companies, switched to Toyota and now they're in contention to win every week suddenly.

From MyNetworkTV's standpoint, the WWE fans will always go to watch SD! where it is, so that'll bring all the viewers to their network. I can't really complain since it's actually the best channel, signal wise my TV can get.

Hey, I do have channel 40. I don't watch it enough to know it is called "MyNetworkTV". I honestly don't think I've ever watched it at all.

I wonder if the night of broadcast will change. Will it still be Friday Night SmackDown! or will they go back to Thursday? Or maybe they'll pick another day completely?

In today’s New York Daily News MyNetworkTV President Greg Meidel had more comments in regards to SmackDown coming to the network this fall. When asked if he would have any input into the shows, he commented, "We're going to continue to let the creative brains behind the WWE - the McMahon family, both Vince and Linda - do what they do best. Their enthusiasm and their excitement today is equal and probably more than what it was years ago." When asked about WWE bringing scrutiny to the network because of steroid allegations Meidel continued, "Every sport goes through the ebb and flow of life. We've witnessed that in baseball and football this past year with certain incidents, and they've weathered the storm and will be bigger and better because of that. This is a very proud organization and the McMahons have done a phenomenal job in the past several decades of building it from the ground up."

MediaPost.com is reporting that MyNetworkTV is paying WWE a licensing fee and will then gain all of the advertising time. To help compensate for the fee, MNTV is asking affiliates to give up an extra two minutes of ad inventory each hour during the show. According to a MNTV representative, so far affiliates have been amenable.

Meidel's comments

The WWE will be putting "SmackDown" into the MyNetworkTV lineup this fall.

The network and World Wrestling Entertainment said Tuesday that the two-hour weekly show will be moving over from the CW network this fall.

"We were incredibly excited" to grab the rights to 'Smackdown,' " said MyNetworkTV president Greg Meidel yesterday. "It's a major programming franchise and a tremendous asset," said Meidel. "It's a guaranteed win. ... Anytime you can take a night that has been established, that has a huge brand attached to it and is big and as bold and as bright as the WWE and 'SmackDown' is, it was an opportunity we could not afford to lose."

Locally, the move puts the WWE back on WWOR/Ch. 9, formerly a UPN station, where the program aired before that network merged with the WB. After the merger in 2006, "SmackDown" was on CW, but the negotiating window to continue that contract expired Jan. 31.

Despite the WWE coming under scrutiny in recent years after steroid accusations against some of its most famous participants, Meidel said the franchise is as strong as ever.

"Every sport goes through the ebb and flow of life," said Meidel. "We've witnessed that in baseball and football this past year with certain incidents, and they've weathered the storm and will be bigger and better because of that. This is a very proud organization and the McMahons have done a phenomenal job in the past several decades of building it from the ground up."

"SmackDown" is tentatively planned to run on Thursdays or Fridays.

The acquisition comes at a time when MyNetworkTV is having a growth spurt. The network has recently added several original shows to the lineup, including "Jail," "Decision House" and "Celebrity Exposé," which have pulled significant ratings in key audiences. The network also just announced a new comedy starring Flavor Flav entitled "Under One Roof."

As to whether MyNetworkTV will change anything about "SmackDown" when it arrives, Meidel said he is only planning to let the show and its creators do their thing.

"We're going to continue to let the creative brains behind the WWE - the McMahon family, both Vince and Linda - do what they do best," Meidel said. "Their enthusiasm and their excitement today is equal and probably more than what it was years ago. They are so pumped up."

According to an article on Reuters the CW Network is struggling financially and laid off 25-30 employees on Monday. The article mentions that the CW Network looks to revamp by adding new programming. CW choosing not to renew WWE SmackDown was mentioned in the article, saying that the network will probably add more reality programming.

Just what the world needs, more crappy reality shows. :-/

The timeslot for SD! is going to remain the same once they move. They'll still be on Friday Nights from 8 to 10.

WWE Smackdown will continue to air on Friday nights in the same time slot when it moves from The CW to MyNetwork TV this fall, according to TVWeek.com. MyNet president Greg Meidel was interviewed by the entertainment site and commented on the show's pending arrival.

"What it brings for us is that it really fits us like a glove," Meidel said. "This is truly an opportunity for us to take a franchise that’s proven, that works, that attracts a large audience as the dominant force every Friday night, as it did prior to that on UPN."
