ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness has learned some very valuable lessons since winning the ROH World Title almost six months ago. When you reach the top everyone treats you differently. Now the pressures have ignited a change in McGuinness.

"He does too many lariats."

"I can't believe he's injured again."

"He should have won the belt six months earlier."

"Bryan is better than him."

"McLariat can't carry the company."

"Are you kidding me? Another injury!"

Those are all the phrases that McGuinness has heard again and again from the fans since defeating Takeshi Morishima at "Undeniable" to win the World Title last October. On February 23rd in Manhattan at the 6th Anniversary Show, McGuinness' actions spoke back loudly as he basically said, "to hell with the fans."

During the days before The 6th Anniversary Show a number of thoughts began running through Nigel's head. He began to question why he was putting his future health on the line for ungrateful fans. He started to wonder why some of the ROH faithful chose to abandon him after his dream came true. A resentment began to grow. That resentment turned into anger that exploded in Manhattan.

McGuinness decided to cut a promo in the ring early in the show on February 23rd. He talked about how Danielson is reckless and likes to strike and kick his opponent's head. Nigel expressed concern about his future health to the crowd. He tried to back out of the match that night vs. Danielson as the crowd's disdain grew. Danielson then entered the scene and assured McGuinness that he had a million ways to beat him and that he would stay away from his head. McGuinness agreed to wrestle the match by ominously saying "you people will get your World Title Match."

Danielson and McGuinness were even during the opening minutes of the World Title Match. Then a few minutes later McGuinness, in an act unbecoming of the ROH World Champion, slugged the referee to get purposely DQ'ed to retain his title. McGuinness grabbed the mic and with anger told the fans that they "got their World Title Match" and then walked down the aisle way. Nigel's path was cut off by members of the locker room that were offended by his actions including Austin Aries, Kevin Steen, Delirious and even Roderick Strong. Nigel's actions were so despicable that even Strong and Aries stood side-by-side. ROH President Cary Silkin was quick to order the match restarted.

Now the exchange of hatred between McGuinness and the fans erupted. Nigel lashed out at the crowd. A sea of middle fingers greeted the World Champion everytime he turned to the fans. Danielson kept his word and stayed away from Nigel's head. However, soon we found out that McGuinness' complaining early in the card was all a ruse.

McGuinness, with malicious intent, turned the tide by nailing Danielson with two vicious headbutts. Not exactly the actions of someone who wanted his opponent to stay away from his head. Then Nigel sank even lower when he delivered a series of potent elbows to Danielson's previously injured eye. The crowd booed with animosity. McGuinness returned the hatred right back to them. McGuinness' tactics led him to retain the World Title.

"I don't give a damn about one person out there," McGuinness said. "I worked my life for this belt and if anyone thinks they can take it from me come and try it. I don't care if its a fan, a wrestler from ROH or another promotion, a boxer, someone from MMA, just come and try me. It's time I go back to my roots. To hell with all of you."

Those were the only comments we were able to get from McGuinness. There will be an exclusive sit down interview with him in a week or so at ROHvideos.com that will see Nigel explain his thoughts and motivations further.

In many ways, he's right. He busted his ass putting on those hard hitting matches against Morishima and finally got the belt, while the fans or most started not accepting him as champ.

Personally I think whoever has held the belt is good enough represent them cause they literally put their bodies on the line to give the audience a hell of a show.

The same with most of their matches. It's just for the main and tag belts, they step it up a notch and for anyone not to appreciate that doesn't appreciate the business.
