Toning commentary down

Vince is giving the announcers a new direction while calling matches. Vince wants more storytelling and less calling holds. Instead of screaming during major angles (like they do on TNA) he wants the announcers to lay out and not say anything. The feeling is that the programming will feel more “real” and not as “staged” with fewer/weaker voices. Joey Styles in particular has been told to announce more low-key and not to raise his voice, and to stop calling moves so often. This is basically a 180 degree direction from what made Styles so popular and such a good announcer. Jim Ross has also been given similar direction.

Like SmackDown? The one episode I've seen of SmackDown in months was a few weeks ago with Coach and Cole. Holy crap, it was weird and oddly dull.

If they want J.R. and Styles to not get excited over things as much anymore, then they should probably get someone other than J.R. and Styles since, you know, that's kind of their schtick. :-/

I think what they mean is things like when Jeff flew off the stage and JBL beat up Horny. If you noticed, the announcers just went quiet. I dunno, just my hunch. Can't believe all the reports.

Even tonight on Raw....there were dead spots in the commentary. Maybe because it was the 3rd hour and they were tired or because they were being told what not to do or say.
Asking a commentator not to yell is asking them not to put more emotion into the commentary, and I think that's a mistake.

The only dead spot I noticed was when Cena was getting some offense in on HBK. But that's no different then any other Cena match.

No, this time was different. There were 5-10 second delays in commentary. Even one time when they were about to go to commercial, it got quiet. Someone was talking to them through those headphones of theirs.

Wow, it's really funny. Like everytime I turn into a WWE event now, or watch a clip online, it seems like there's nobody talking. I actually think it would sound more "real" if the announcers were screaming their heads off after something shocking happens. The perfect example was the Lesnar/Big Show match when they broke the ring after the superplex, and Tazz yelled out "Holy shit!" That was more real to me than anything.

How does the commentating in real sports sound like? Or better yet, how does MMA commentating sound like - since so many in wrestling wishes they were MMA right now?

I'm really only familiar with World's Strongest Man competitions and football commentating, so I don't know how WWE's new style compares to other commentators.

You can't compare. The majority of announcers actually call the moves going on the field. I'm most familiar with NASCAR and MLB (usually Yankees) announcers most, and they both call everything that goes on, except for the former when there's a crash that looks like it could be really serious (as in, serious injuries could occurr). Then they just stay silent and call for a commercial break.

So then what are they trying to do? If they're commentary isn't imitating other more legit sports and it isn't in any of the usual pro wrestling styles, then what are they doing? What are they trying to accomplish?

I guess to try and be less and less by Don West, even though they really weren't like him in the first place? Contrary to a few here, I've been a huge fan of the WWE style of announcing over the past few years: the "storytelling" announcing. It's fit really well with the direction they're trying to go in, especially in the WrestleMania-type atmosphere. So I really have no idea why they're trying to change that. I thought Vince hated going through the "silent air" treatment anyway, or that's at least what Michaels said in his book referring to the "enziguiri of death."
