World Wrestling Entertainment's latest venture targets the tiniest of its fan base.

Hitting newsstands next week is the Stamford-based company's newest publication, WWE Kids - a magazine geared toward children ages 6 to 14.

The bimonthly magazine will contain age-appropriate content about nutrition, exercise, history and geography, along with an assortment of games and puzzles featuring WWE's superstars like Triple H, John Cena and Rey Mysterio.

"This is part of a larger company youth initiative," said Bob Lee, vice president and publishing director for WWE. "We're looking for a logical brand extension and WWE magazine has had great success."

Despite a softening advertising market for most publications, WWE Magazine has defied the odds the past few years, nearly doubling in size to a monthly circulation of about 300,000, Lee said.

WWE Kids, which will be produced in Stamford, looks to capture the crowd younger than the company's core 18- to 49-year-old demographic.

"We're looking to introduce some to the brand," Lee said. By introducing WWE to children at a young age, "there's a very strong likelihood that if they were to walk away from that brand, they'll come back to it later in life."

With an estimated 2.6 million 6- to 14-year-old fans watching WWE programming each week, the children's magazine will have an initial run of 100,000 copies.

As part of a promotion at Wal-Mart stores, the magazine will be sold with copies of "WWE Magazine," Lee said.

Industry observers said the magazine launch is a small, calculated risk for the company that could help it retain its younger fan base.

"They understand their customers," said Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities in Los Angeles. "It's not like they have to start up a brand new organization. They're also very good at using their print publications as advertising for the rest of their productions."

Because the WWE is an established player in the media market, its new magazine could be successful, said Richard Hanley, director of Quinnipiac University's communications graduate program.

"They have a well-defined demographic," Hanley said. "They have all the cards lined up for them, except a robust economy."

WWE officials said the new magazine will have a positive influence on its young readers.

"People love the concept," Lee said. "It's tough to get kids to read these days. This is engaging. It helps them with their vocabulary. It's win-win."

Most of the features in the inaugural issue, which hits newsstands April 14, were designed to be light-hearted, entertaining and packed full of photos, Lee said.

For example, readers are asked to identify an assortment of historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and Elvis Presley as they're wearing the mask of Mexican Lucha Libre wrestler Rey Mysterio.

And to help children understand the height of wrestler Great Khali, who is 7 feet, 3 inches tall, 164 iPods, 25 skateboards and 1,653 CDs are stacked up next to him in a picture.

Also, for kids who want to be as chiseled as their WWE heroes, one article tells them to steer clear of the nachos and nonstop video games.

"Our superstars are in fabulous shape," Lee said. "They eat right and exercise."

Isn't too surprising that WWE is publishing a magazine targeted for the 6-14 age range. WWE has been trying to appeal to kids for years now. It may be a magazine for children, but I'm interested in seeing what it's going to be about.

You will see in the next couple of months that the WWE is planning to start heavily marketing towards children, mainly using CM Punk.

They are opening up the WWE Kids magazine online and the first edition has CM Punk is featured in it. Two of the main wrestlers that have been pushed towards children are out of action due to a drug suspension (Jeff Hardy) and an injury (Rey Mysterio). So, with that in mind, the WWE wants CM Punk to be highly pushed towards children and their parents. You will really start to notice this after WrestleMania. The WWE public relations machine has already had Punk attend a few schools and there is currently a newspaper article about going to a WWE show and one of the major parts from it was that these parents took their kids to the WWE show to see CM Punk, since he's drug, alcohol, and steroid free.

Linda McMahon also always mentions his name during most of her TV interviews, as both she and Vince are huge fans of CM Punk, as they appreciate his attitude and lifestyle.

There are still reports circulating around the Internet that there is backstage heat on CM Punk, however, they are not true. One source told me, “Think about it, if there were heat on CM Punk why would the company put him on RAW against Carlito and in the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania?” Apparently the reports stem from people that do not like CM Punk as there are some of the boys within the company that do not like the way that he comes across. Some people backstage see Punk as a “know-it-all” thus there are reports leaked that he is not liked.

BURN IT DOOOWWNNNNNNNN!
With Punk preaching about being straight edge, I guess he would be a right choice. But then again he doesn't have the look of someone who's "clean cut"
