LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Everwood" creator Greg Berlanti has signed a deal to co-write and direct a live-action feature adaptation of DC Comics' superhero "Green Lantern."
While several incarnations of the character have existed sinc his creation in 1940, the Warner Bros. movie will focus on the Lantern embodied by Hal Jordan, a test pilot who finds a downed alien spacecraft. A dying alien passes his ring to Jordan, introducing the man to a wider world that includes an interstellar police force known as the Green Lantern Corps and its overseers, the Guardians of the Universe, who live on the planet Oa.
Like any superhero, the Lantern has a weakness, the color yellow, and was known for reciting an oath when charging his ring.
"To me, this was on the last great comic book movie that hasn't been made," said Berlanti, who grew up reading comics in the 1980s. "It was a comic book with a real mythology that you would see in a lot of the space operas and the sci-fi books. The best part about it, anybody can be become one of the Green Lanterns because anyone can end up with that ring."
Berlanti met with DC Comics a year ago about bringing the hero to the big screen. He brought on board co-writers Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green, fellow comic book fans he met when working on "Jack & Bobby," the WB Network series he co-created, and worked for months to develop a story, with DC Comics senior vp Gregory Noveck helping shape it as the trio went along.
When they went in to pitch, Berlanti had a concept artist draw up 30 images of key scenes and images to help sell to the studio the movie he wanted to direct. He also pitched Warners brass a series of movies, with the first being an origin of how Jordan becomes a member of the intergalactic police force.
The biggest challenge in setting up "Lantern" was waiting for the technology to become available to create fantastical worlds as well as overcoming the prejudice of a ring-bearing hero.
"The danger and the fear from a lot of people is that it would be silly," said Berlanti. "In these post-'Harry Potter' and 'Lord of the Rings' days, it's not any more fantastical than that. It's taken movies like that to make it feel as if a Green Lantern film is possible."
I am a big fan of GL and specifically Hal Jordan. I grew up reading his books. If they make this movie, they had better not fuck it up. It's slated for release in 2010.

That's more than enough time to put some good stuff together. I enjoyed just about any of the newer comic book movies that have come out. Some were better than others while others I just thought was a bit much like Elektra.
I'm really hoping to see a Deadpool movie since I've been a huge fan of his for some time.

I think the origin is Hollywood enough to be made into a decent movie, but I could see the weakness being the color yellow being ridiculed by casual audience members. It is a pretty dumb weakness.
Other than in the Justice League cartoons, I've never been a GL fan - but I'd want to see this movie.

The sad thing is they have explained that and basically done away with the yellow weakness in the comics. But, the movie won't.

I have no doubt that a good GL movie can be made, it's just that taking his weakness from paper to the big screen will make him seem utterly ridiculous.

I'm really hoping to see a Deadpool movie since I've been a huge fan of his for some time.
Ryan Reynolds has been casted to play Deadpool in the new Wolverine movie coming out in 2009 or 10 and Marvel hopes that it'll spawn a Deadpool movie since they've been trying to pass one for quite some time now.

A Deadpool movie or Deadpool in a movie would have to have fourth wall breaking or else it's a sham.

IESB.net takes a look at the script for the 'Green Lantern' movie and offers up this rumor: George Miller is no longer attached to direct the 'Justice League' movie, but may take the reins of this one instead.
The site laid hands on a draft of the script by Greg Berlanti (who has been attached to direct), Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green and liked it quite a bit.
"From the first major beat of the story - that is sure to bring a tear - to the revelations at the end of the movie that easily set up prequels as well as sequels this script has it all. Also, unlike other recent superhero movies, this Green Lantern story has science fiction elements such as visiting other planets and major space battles," writes IESB chief Robert Sanchez.
He goes on to report that Warner Bros. loves the screenplay. However, it may be too ambitious a movie for Berlanti, with only one feature film credit on his directing resume.
This is where George Miller comes in. Supposedly the studio is quietly letting the 'Justice League' movie fade and Miller has already been released from that project. According to IESB, the studio may now be looking for him to come on board 'Green Lantern' and deliver the ambitious adventure move.

I guess a lot of the comic book movies are being delayed or just stopped because of the Dark Knight. Studios are going to start putting in more effort into them because they've seen that with the right people doing the movie it can make a crapload of money and be a classic film.
I'll be sure to source this later.

Marc Guggenheim told Comicon Pulse that work proceeds on the 'Green Lantern' movie.
"I've been working my ass off on 'Green Lantern'," he said in an extensive interview with the website. "I'm ready for a weekend off. I really can't say too much about it. I've sworn a blood oath of secrecy. I will tell you it features Hal Jordan and is an incredibly faithful rendition of the character. It honors everything everyone loves about the hero. We approach it from a fan's perspective. Every step of the way, we ask ourselves what we want to see and what the fans will want to see. I think we have a script that will actually satisfy on those levels. Right now I'm just doing a rewrite for the studio with Greg [Berlanti] and Michael [Green]. We'll turn that in next week. We just keep moving forward. It's really good stuff!"

Latino Review provides a hybrid script review/rumor debunking in one article when they turn their sights towards 'Green Lantern'.
First up, there's apparently a rumor making the rounds that actor David Broeanaz ('Bones') was up for the lead role in the film. LR looked into and found out the rumor was completely untrue. The script is out to actors but Boreanaz isn't one of them.
The reason? He's too old. Hal Jordan is meant to be in his late twenties, whereas the former 'Buffy' and 'Angel' star is in his late thirties.
As for the script? LR read what is said to be the first draft and there have been several drafts since then. Here's a synopsis of what they had to say:
The script is good. REALLY REALLY GOOD. Hence the B+ rating. I had a ball reading it and got very into it...Fanboys are gonna love the shit out of it though. Reading this script and the exceptional work done on SUPERMAX aka GREEN ARROW, it is perfectly clear that Warner Bros. Pictures has upped their comic book movie game and want to go after MARVEL really hard.
Latino review goes into full detail about the script with some spoiler type info if you want to read it, click HERE.

No. There is a movie Called Super Max that is being made where Oliver Queen goes to a Super Max prison and fights super villains. I can't believe there isn't a thread for it. I'll put something up on in in a bit.

FirstShowing.net spoke with 'Green Lantern' producer Donald De Line, who said that the movie is "gearing up to start shooting early spring." Greg Berlanti is still on board to direct.
That seems ambitious but De Line said, "it's coming together and I'm excited about it. Hopefully we'll make it to start gate. We're really close - really close."
This sounds like they are going full ahead with this. If they want to start shooting in the spring, they need to start casting soon.

Latinoreview.com reports that things are moving along nicely for the upcoming film adaptation of DC superhero Green Lantern and that actor Ryan Gosling (The Notebook) will indeed don the mantle of Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern. This, in the aftermath of recent rumors of the role being filled by Seth Green, Justin Long, and David Boreanaz. Rehearsals for Green Lantern are said to begin this February.

Newsarama.com chats up Marc Guggenheim, famed comics writer and creator of the TV show 'Eli Stone', who also happens to be one of the screenwriters on the 'Green Lantern' movie. The writer confirms that the movie seems to be on the fast track.
"It's pretty far along," Guggenheim said. "We're reasonably deep into it [Green Lantern]. I'm never really comfortable publicly commenting on the movie because unlike the TV show, I'm just one of three writers and I've sworn a blood oath to secrecy. But we're in the thick of it. We're moving along at a pretty hefty clip."
He also had little to say about the recent rumors placing actor Ryan Gosling in the lead role.
"I read that online, actually," Guggenheim said. "That was how I got that news. As one of the writers, I'm not really involved in the day-to-day pre-production on it all. But I think it would be pretty amazing. I'll go on record saying that."

Rumor on the internet is that Ryan Gosling will not be playing 'Green Lantern' in the upcoming movie. Producers apparently made an offer to Casey Affleck, who was awesome in 'Gone Baby Gone', but apparently that deal didn't work out either. No word on who the next candidate may be.
I hate rumors...

Source: MTV Splash Page
Marc Guggenheim told MTV Splash Page that work is progression on the 'Green Lantern' feature film.
He and writing partners Michael Green and Greg Berlanti are on their third draft of of the script. Guggenheim also said that production designers are hard at work creating concept artwork for various elements of the movie.
"I will say that the design work is truly mindblowing, and it’s hard to pick a favorite. But the shots on Oa are spectacular. What Oa looks like has never been seen on film," Guggenheim said.
He also revealed that there's been talk of having a Clark Kent cameo in the movie.
"There were rumors that Tom Welling would have a cameo in ‘Batman Begins’ as a young Clark Kent, to meet up with a young Bruce Wayne,” Guggenheim noted. "But you have to be careful when you do things like that, because it sounds great in concept, but when you sit down to watch it, it poses the danger of pulling you out of the film.
"The fanboy in me would love that. Robert Downey, Jr. in ‘The Hulk’ was awesome. I love that stuff in general, and I think the fans would enjoy it. Brandon Routh or even Tom Welling [in 'Green Lantern'] would be awesome. And anything is possible. The beauty part of being the writer, though, is that I don’t actually have to make that judgment call."

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that filmmakers for Warner Bros. are scouting locations in New South Wales and meeting with local artisans in Sydney. All of this is said to be build-up to the 'Green Lantern' production.
The paper mentions that the region is starved for a big-budget Hollywood picture, not having hosted one since 'Australia' and 'Wolverine' wrapped earlier this year.
The article also mentions a casting rumor that's been roundly debunked, so we won't repeat it for fear of perpetuation.

Variety reports that 'Casino Royale' director Martin Campbell is in negotiations with Warner Bros. to helm the 'Green Lantern' movie.
The film, with a script penned by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green, has long seemed the next hot DC Comics property, with the 'Superman' and 'Justice League' efforts recently fizzling.
Berlanti was previously rumored to be directing but adding a hot-hand like Campbell is certain to propel the movie forward. Berlanti will instead direct 'This is Where I Live You' for WB, and is still on board as a producer along with Donald DeLine.

(IGN) by Scott Collura
February 5, 2009 - Just as the news broke today that director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) is in talks to take on the job of helming a Green Lantern live-action film, as luck would have it IGN was attending an unrelated press conference with Michael Green, who co-wrote the GL script. So we of course had to pull Green aside and hit him up with some power-ring questions!
"They just announced that they're in talks with a new director on it," Green told us during a break from promoting his new NBC series Kings. "From what I understand, they're edging towards making the movie. Warner Bros. doesn't do greenlights the way a lot of places do. They sort of always inch towards it, so there's never a day where they're like, 'Boom! Magic bomb! We're greenlit!' But we've had very good conversations with them. From what I'm told, they really like the last script we gave them and are hoping to find a way to make it, which would be thrilling."
Green (no relation to the Lantern), who has written everything from episodes of Heroes to the Superman/Batman comic, penned the script with Greg Berlanti, who was previously slotted to direct the film, and Marc Guggenheim (The Flash: The Fastest Man Alive. The writer cites the recent Warner Bros./DC "summit meeting" as part of the reason for the apparently renewed interest at the studio in the long gestating project.
"What emerged from that, from what I know as I was not a part of it, was that from that meeting a lot of enthusiasm for Green Lantern came about," says Green. "I think they liked it. I think DC liked it. I've heard very nice things from DC and I've heard nice things from DC writers. Actually, another really nice compliment -- Geoff Johns read it and I bumped into him and he was really nice and complimentary about it. I thought that was really cool because I like his comics."
Of course, the scribe is mum on most of the details of the storyline, but he does confirm that the most famous of the Lanterns will be at the center of the film.
"It's Hal Jordan," he confirms. "I can't give too many spoilers, but the idea is to introduce a new character to an audience that is probably not familiar with him. So we start at the beginning with Hal Jordan."
As for the inclusion of other GLs like John Stewart or Alan Scott, Green does not rule out the possibility that such characters might show up as well.
"We are steeped in the mythology enough that extrapolations both forward and backward in time are available," says Green, before responding to the question of whether or not the film will be "cosmic" with a simple and concise, "He's the Green Lantern."
And then there's always the Justice League issue when discussing any DC Comics film property. The team film that was being put together at Warner Bros. recently and rather famously blew up in director George Miller's face, Krypton style. But still, with Marvel's The Avengers clearly on the fast track, it seems inevitable that Warner is going to want to reassemble the JLA in the near future. And that will presumably involve the Green Lantern, though Green says there has been no mandate from the studio during the writing of GL to somehow set up or otherwise tie into a possible Justice League movie.
"I'm sure they've had those conversations [at the studio]," says Green. "I don't know what the current plans are for Justice League. I would go see it! It sounds cool. I think the idea is to treat them separately right now and, like all things, they eventually tie together in the mind of the viewer. The only mandate such as it is was, 'Any references you want to make to expand the DC world, we would enjoy,' which is one of the better notes you can get. … It's like, 'Oh, more candy? Please!' They opened up the DC toy box on that, so it was fun. It's definitely tied to the familiar DC universe. It's very much something to honor the people who love Green Lantern the way me and the other writers read it, faithfully and honoring everything that it is without any violations of the substance."

Director Martin Campbell talked with ComingSoon.net recently at the press junket for 'Edge of Darkness' and gave some additional insights to his plans for 'Green Lantern'. "Actually, it's the origin story really. You may or may not know but there are five human Green Lanterns over the period of some 60 years, since 1940, which is when they first wrote it, and ours is Hal Jordan, who happens to be the most popular Green Lantern. He's the fighter pilot from Ferris Aviation so that origin story is fairly clearly in the comics, and it's fairly well known so we're sticking in principle fairly closely to that," Campbell said of the direction of his film. The director also revealed he hopes to continue with the character beyond the first movie, as he did with past franchises such as James Bond and Zorro but sees Hal Jordan as potentially more interesting than those two iconic heroes. "You get a little protective about the franchise sometimes, you sort of say, 'I've done it once so I'll do it again,'" Campbell said. "I'm just interested in the origin story of 'Green Lantern' because I think he's just more complex and with more hang-ups as those superheroes and probably a lot of the others." Campbell also admits that, unlike Marvel's current strategy of universe-building, his task on 'Green Lantern' is focused solely on these specific characters and where they may go in future films. "I think it will stick closely to the origin story, but of course, we all know that Sinestro for example is a character who goes over to the Dark Side, and of course, we have Carol. She'll be played by Blake Lively. I think people will be able to see forward in the characters, that in the comic went on to become... in Sinestro's case, he goes over to the Dark Side and indeed Carol in later versions becomes a bad guy as well. (laughs) But people will be ahead of us on all that I think." Variety reports that there's a visual effects team in place for the upcoming 'Green Lantern' movie. Warner Bros has hired Sony Pictures Imageworks to send Ryan Reynolds into space as DC Comics' cosmic supehero. Providing overall supervision are Karen Goulekas ('The Day After Tomorrow') and Kent Houston ('The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus'). Jim Berney ('I Am Legend') will be vfx supervisor for Imageworks. However, the more exciting 'Green Lantern' news this week comes from a site called Cosmic Book News. They've posted what is purported to be character designs for Kilowog, Abin Sur and Tomar-Re. They do not name the source of the images, nor are they able to identify the artist/studio that created them, so it's hard to say to a certainty that they are legit. Cosmic Book News does claim to have confirmation of their legitimacy, but they simply link to a Green Lantern message board, so we're not sure if that qualifies as confirmation. Perhaps the poster there vouching for the images is a well-established professional but it's hard to say since everyone is going under assumed names. At any rate, the quality of the design images does seem to be quite good, and not unlike the designs found on the website of one Aaron Sims, the visual effects artist and character designer who is confirmed to be working on the film. It's entirely possible that the images are his handiwork. We still have no official confirmation that these images do, in fact, represent work done on the 'Green Lantern' movie. However, the Sinestro image does reveal one interesting big of info. There's a visible signature in the lower right corner of the image, and while it's nearly unreadable in the low-res pic, it does appear to be the mark of one E.J. Krisor. Krisor (who designed the looks of Venom and Sandman in 'Spider-Man 3') is known to be the concept/character illustrator on 'Green Lantern'. Here are the latest images:

OK. We knew they were going big with the 'Green Lantern' movie. We knew that we'd see Oa, and the Guardians and the Corps. We'd see Sinestro and Kilowog for sure. Earlier this week, Geoff Johns revealed another member of the Green Lantern Corps who we'll be seeing on the big screen. "Saw the finalized power ring from the Green Lantern film," Johns posted via Twitter. "Yeah. It rocks. Also saw freaking SALAAK. This is AMAZING." For the uninitiated, Salaak is a four-armed, pickle-headed critter and key member of the Corps. Wikipedia describes him thusly: "A famous pessimist and loner, Salaak is a creature of protocol and laws. A veteran Green Lantern he has served in many Corps campaigns over the years. During the Crisis on Infinite Earths he protects multiple sectors, but found the experience depressing. After this, he went to Earth looking for company amongst his fellow Green Lanterns. He served with the contingent of Green Lanterns assigned to Earth and became good friends with Ch'p of H'lven. For a time Salaak lived in the future, filling the identity of Pol Manning as Hal Jordan had before him. While in the future, Salaak was married to a human woman." In the recent Blackest Night storyline, Salaak assumed control of the Green Lantern Corps to repel the siege by the Black Lanterns. Picture of Salaak
