Just when you thought there couldn't be more casting additions to the 'Green Lantern' movie, the Heat Vision blog at THR reports that actress Angela Bassett is now on board the film.
Most intriguing: She's set to play Amanda "The Wall" Waller in the movie. Fans know well that, in the comics, Waller is a power-player in the world of super hero politics, having headed up such groups as the Suicide Squad and Checkmate, and was the Secretary of Metahuman Affairs under president Lex Luthor.
The character has appeared in animated form several times and debuted on 'Smallville' during last month's "Absolute Justice" TV movie. She was played there by actress Pam Grier.
Fans may also recall that last February Warner Bros. announced plans for a 'Suicide Squad' movie under producer Dan Lin. So Bassett's role here could potentially lay the ground work for that film.
Another theory that occurs to C2F: Bassett is DC Entertainment's Samuel L. Jackson. We could see her popping up in various DCU movies, keeping tabs on the growing metahuman community and eventually triggering the formation of the 'Justice League'.
Spectators in Madisonville Louisiana nave sent a photo of what looks to be some kind of space craft from the set of 'Green Lantern' to the Comic Book Movie website. The silver, metallic craft is seen in the photo being lowered into the lake water from a boat trailer.
Speculation is that this may be the craft that carries the Green Lantern Abin Sur to earth for his fateful meeting with Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds).
In other 'Lantern' news, actor Mark Strong chatted with USA Weekend about the project, in which he plays future villain Sinestro.
"For anybody who’s familiar with the Green Lantern and the origin story, the film closely follows the early comics. Sinestro starts out as Hal Jordan’s mentor, slightly suspicious and not sure of him because obviously Hal is the first human being who’s made into a Green Lantern," Strong said. "He’s certainly very strict and certainly unsure of the wisdom of Hal becoming a Green Lantern."
"He is a military guy but isn’t immediately bad. It’s the kind of person he is that lends himself to becoming bad over the course of the comics being written, but initially he’s quite a heroic figure.”
Strong also spoke about the character's appearance and inspiration in the comics, and how he aims to emulate that in the movie.
"That widow’s peak and thin mustache was for some reason originally based on David Niven, and Hal Jordan was based on Errol Flynn," Strong told USA Weekend. "In the ‘30s and ‘40s, they shared an apartment together in Hollywood when they were making movies and they were great friends. Obviously at the time, whoever was doing the original comics must have looked at them as guys doing very well in the film industry, and based those characters on them. So I would like to do justice to the Sinestro that was conceived for the comic books."
We’ve all been speculating for some time now on what Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern costume might look like and, whatever your best guess was, it was wrong. In fact, Green Lantern may not wear fabric at all. Instead, he could be clothed entirely in CGI.
Slashfilm says the costume Ryan Reynolds will wear is going to be completely computer generated. On set as they shoot the movie, he’s wearing a performance capture suit, which they’ll fill in later with whizbang computer graphics.
Though I’m usually first in line to decry Hollywood’s overuse of computer generated wizardry, if you think about it, this could actually be cool. We’ve seen guys running around in tights before, there’s an opportunity here to do something really different because of who and what Green Lantern is. The Lantern’s super power isn’t abnormal strength or speed or any of the usual stuff. His power is that his ring gives him the ability to create pretty much anything out of thin air. So if you’re a superhero who can create anything at any time, do you put on a pair of spandex pajamas underneath your Dockers or do you use your power to create anything to make the most kick-ass, super-suit ever imagined whenever you want, wherever you want it, in whatever shape or size suits the situation you’re in? I know what my answer is and if that’s what they’re doing, this makes a lot of very, very cool sense.
Slashfilm’s rumor seems to agree with this notion, pointing out that his powers are alien and an alien looking suit might make be in order. They say that when the suit is complete it will “look like a manifestation of his power”. If that's really the direction they're going, I’m in.
It's basically going to just come down to how it looks. I mean, in the comic, the ring does create each GL's suit. So it totally makes sense. But, if they make him look dumb, well, there you go.
While there's been a trickle of leaked photos from the set of 'Green Lantern' we have the first cool makeup shot courtesy of Sky Showbiz. The paparazzi there snagged a photo of actor Peter Sarsgaard in full mushroom-head makeup as villain Hector Hammond.
In the comics, the character exposes himself to a strange meteor which cause his brain to grow to enormous proportions and vests him with an array of psionic abilities. In the film version, Hammond is the son of a former astronaut (played by Tim Robbins) who is exposed to alien technology carried to Earth by Abin Sur.
For Ryan Reynolds, the most professionally satisfying moment of 2009 was the first time he saw the Green Lantern costume he'd be rocking for the upcoming big-screen adaptation of the classic DC Comics superhero.
"It was a moment when I was like, 'This is happening, and it's happening in the right way,' " Reynolds told MTV News last fall. "That's a pretty cool, definitive moment for me."
Now the rest of us are getting a chance to see the costume that blew Reynolds' mind. Entertainment Weekly has debuted a first look at the Green Lantern — and his test-pilot alter ego, Hal Jordan — who will be gracing multiplexes in the summer of 2011. The cover image shows Reynolds in familiar Lantern garb, complete with green mask, glowing green suit and iconic power ring, which can bring into existence nearly anything Hal can imagine.
"Will and imagination are his superpowers," said Reynolds, who reportedly injured his shoulder on the "Green Lantern" set earlier this week. "We need a circus of Timothy Learys to think of things Hal would invent with his ring."
Though experienced in the action movie realm, from "Blade: Trinity" to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," Reynolds confessed that nothing could prepare him for the wire-work involved in the "Green Lantern" shoot, which required him to fly through the air at up to 60 feet per second to simulate the illusion of real flight.
"The first time you do it, you're seriously considering an adult diaper," Reynolds said.
Directed by Martin Campbell ("Casino Royale") and co-starring Tim Robbins, Blake Lively, Mark Strong and Peter Sarsgaard, the movie is set to hit theaters on June 17, 2011. In MTV News' earlier conversation with Reynolds, he heaped praise on Campbell's vision for the film.
"When you have a guy like Martin Campbell, part of his charm is that he has ba--s of titanium, and the other part is that he's slightly crazy, and you have to be to take on something with the scope of 'Green Lantern,' " he said. "I sat down with him, and I could not even believe what he was saying. When I went to the meeting, I was entirely cynical. I thought, 'What the hell, I'll see what they have to say,' and I left the room with a completely different perspective."
Bleeding Cool reports a rumor, sourced only to New Orleans bar-room talk, which purports that Warner Bros. will go into production on Green Lantern 2 before the first movie even hits theaters next summer.
Apparently the studio is happy with what they've seen of the first movie that they're expecting big things. And if the first one does well, they'll supposedly extend the filming on the sequel to encompass a third film as well. The scheme would allow them to roll out three Lantern movies in three years, a much fast pace than most superhero epics.
Of course, BC cautions that this report is entirely derived from some open boasting by someone working on the current movie, overheard at a New Orleans bar, and that person may have been exaggerating, lying, drunk or any/all of the three.
If the report is true, it would certainly screw with Ryan Reynolds planned role in the Deadpool movie.

It had better not cheat me out of seeing a Deadpool movie. The best thing out of the entire X-Men Origins: Wolverine was Deadpool's short time on screen...

...when the team breaks into that facility, rides the elevator, and Deadpool clears the room.
An entire movie with that character is a guaranteed buy from me.
As for Green Lantern, I was never really a fan but have somewhat recently taken a slight shine to him. I liked the Lantern they had in the Justice League/Unlimited TV series, and I enjoyed the Green Lantern animated movie that's on DVD (I saw it on Cartoon Network). But other than that, I'm both unfamiliar and unexposed to the character more or less.
With Ryan starring in this, it makes me much more interested in checking it out. I don't know why Ryan Reynolds tends to get so much flak. He's usually the best thing in all of the projects he's in - all the way back to Two Guys, A Girl, And A Pizza Place.
I like Ryan. I was nervous about him playing Hal. It seems they are going way old school with the character and making him the cocky test pilot that he originally was. I can see Reynolds doing well in that role.

That scene was awesome! As for Green Lantern I don't really know much about him but I reckon it will be a good movie none the less. It's a bit risky for the studio though commissioning a sequel before releasing the first one. Just because "they're happy with what they've seen" does not mean its going to do well at the box office, I'm pretty sure Josh Brolin said something similar in an interview before Jonah Hex was released and look how that turned out...
That being said I highly doubt this movie will suck and a quick succession of sequels will always be appreciated by me (as long as they're good and don't cop out) Just saw this... sounds like bad news

A tweet from Deadpools Creator Rob Liefeld may lead people to believe that the solo movie touted for ol Wade Wilson starring Ryan Reynolds may be in some trouble.. in his tweet Liefield writes
"Warner Bros. just trying to protect their investment. They don't want Ryan Reynolds playing Deadpool AND Green Lantern. Interesting 2 watch"
So since Green Lantern will be made into a Trilogy this could mean the Deadpool movie wont happen.
Over on Twitter, DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer and Green Lantern guru Geoff Johns tells fans, " GREEN LANTERN IS WRAPPED!!!! Finished the last shot today!!! Celebrating in New Orleans. :)"
He goes on to tweet, "As co-producer of the film, I am very, very proud of what we've got in store. Much more to come. Martin Campbell FTW."
As an added bonus, Johns also published a photo of a Red Lantern he discovered in New Orleans.
With the release of the first movie still about 11 months away, Variety reports that Warner Bros. have already gotten started with work on Green Lantern 2.
Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim, the writers of the current movie's screenplay were commissioned to outline their treatment for the sequel a few months back. Now Warner has hired Michael Goldenberg (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) to write the script from their treatment.
Presumably the story will see Sinestro (played my actor Mark Strong) rise up as a nemesis for Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds). In keeping with Lantern lore, Sinestro is Jordan's mentor for most of the first film.
Several days ago, it was revealed that the comic book character Krona will be featured in the Green Lantern movie. According to DC comic canon, Krona's selfish actions are what caused the creation of the "multiverse;" or, parallel universes. Many fans began to wonder whether the inclusion of Krona into the film's story would lead to a similar explanation of DC's movie-verse; and thus, tie their superhero properties together.
Spoiler: click to toggle
- Krona becomes the first "host" to Parallax, by way of the Yellow Power Battery. This takes place as a prologue of the film.
- Parallax doesn't just feed off of fear, it rips the souls out of it's victims; leaving dried "husks" of the corpses.
- Parallax/Krona attacks Abin Sur's ship, which causes him to crash land on Earth and die.
- While performing an autopsy on the corpse of Abin Sur, Hector Hammond becomes infected by a fragment of Parallax which causes him to gain exponential telepathic and telekinetic powers.
- Hammond attacks Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris (whom he harbors feelings towards) at the Ferris airfield hanger, a similar scene to the one in the Green Lantern Secret Origins comic; the difference being that Hammond wants Hal's Green Lantern ring.
- Hammond is ultimately killed by Parallax, who absorbs his soul in the manner mentioned above.
- Parallax fights Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris on Earth. The fight is unevenly matched until other members of the Green Lantern Corps arrive.
I understand what you mean, I have never really checked anything "Green Lantern" related out and that piece of news just completely confused me as to what I had already read about the character.
I read it on worstpreviews.com who said the source is comicbookmovie.com. Who the original source is I do not know...

So it's from some guy on the web and not a credible source. Basically, it's just a rumor at this point. It may in fact be in the movie, but no other News source is reporting anything like this yet. So, I'll wait and see on that one.
IGN got a chance to talk with actor Ryan Reynolds about the Green Lantern movie. Reynold told the site that he's not really the star of the film.
"The movie really started when we wrapped principal photography - that's when everyone really went to work. The few things I've seen - the suit in motion and those kinds of things - has been breathtaking. It's amazing what they're able to do," Reynolds said of the CGI and F/X heavy film.
He also praised director Martin Campbell, as well as his co-star Mark Strong, who plays mentor (and eventual villain) Sinestro.
"Mark's going to bring something unique in that Sinestro is not just a villain. Sinestro's someone that audiences are going to gravitate towards. Sinestro is someone that audiences - dare I say - are going to like," Reynolds said. "But there's something very volatile and mercurial about him, and I think they're going to see that as well. Mark Strong's going to bring a depth to that character that I certainly have been impressed to see."
I really like Mark Strong, I know he only seems to play villainous roles for the most part but he fits that role perfectly in my opinion. I saw an article on MTV.com about the movie having a 3D release, did they film this in 3D or will they be using that dodgey conversion process?
Deadline.com reports that the Green Lantern movie is "jaw-dropping" and (as previously reported) Warner Bros is hot to trot on the sequel. A treatment for Green Lantern 2 by the aforementioned trio (Marc Guggenheim, Michael Green and Greg Berlanti) is hard at work banging out a treatment for the sequel which will also be delivered to the studio before the December holidays.
