So many have brought this up in the last few years, that there aren't any "Austins" or "Rocks" anymore. Many have also come up with theories that the talent isn't good enough, people just don't like getting behind certain wrestlers, etc. In my opinion, I think a lot of it has to do with the scripting of promos. When you look at the 90's, what most call the greatest wrestling period ever, there were guys like Austin, Rock, Foley, Jericho and others who were just amazing on the mic. They all came up and flourished in the WWE when scripting promos still was not the norm; they were given instructions and were able to pretty much come up with their own stuff. I think that's the main problem with today's stuff. A lot of it really doesn't feel real. When you look at Orton, Kennedy, or even someone like Cena, you see that they all have charisma. However, I think they are being held back by the boundaries of creative, and are not able to express themselves properly. You think if they were actually able to say what they want, they could possibly be bigger stars? Without "scripting," there is less of that hollywood effect, and the stars are able to find a direction of their own. I'm not saying give Charlie Hass 10 minutes and a microphone, but I think someone like Cena could do much better when they have the ability to go further than just what is written for them. I think you look at Triple H, Shawn Michaels, or Ric Flair, who you would assume have more creative control over their promos, it shows how being yourself or having your own voice goes above and beyond many others in wrestling today.

I agree that some (maybe even many) wrestlers would do better if they were given key points and allowed to write their own promos around that. When you look at the promos that came out of the Attitude Era, then it's easy to support that theory. But I think you should have to reach a certain level of success before you can do that. Some guys simply cannot work the mic and need to have their hands held. You don't want the wrong person going out there with nothing to say. Only people that ave proven they are suave on the mic.

It's hard to prove you have enough skill to be allowed more freedom on the mic if you're always pushed into sticking to a crappy script.

Yeah, but it can be worked around. You could start out with a fully scripted promo. Then if you deliver that well and get known for being a good mic talent, then they can start giving you more freedom. They could script like 90% of the promo, and let you improvise a few things. If you do well with that, then you can be given more freedom.

Or maybe they just let the talent practice their own promos at house shows or something. Even if it is a really bad promo, no one would ever know.

I always thought that's what would happen at a live show, where they try new things out in front of a smaller crowd and see how it works. But I agree with Cybrus in that they can start them off scripted, and if they do well enough, then they can get weened off.

Well Rock was the promo cutter of all time, no one will ever beat him.

Rock was great for the promos he gave, but I always found him limited in a sense. He could only do the funny/bring it promos. There was never any real emotional promos from Rock. I consider both Austin and Foley better on the mic than Rock.

I think the only person I would find better on the mic was Foley, if we look at his whole career. The Rock really didn't have to do those serious promos, because he had that sarcasm about him that makes it great in a different way. I think Austin was pretty good on the mic, but more than anything, I would rather have him say nothing and beat the crap out of Vince with Zambonis, beer trucks, etc., then talk and not have him do that stuff. So I think his actions, for me, anyway, helped create his personality better than his voice did, although he had a great voice for what he was doing.
