During a recent conference call to discuss their second quarter results, Marvel revealed that Sony has paid them an advance on 'Spider-Man 4', which may be taken as a sign of the studio's commitment to the next installment of the franchise.

Marvel Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, Kenneth West told reporters, "During this quarter, we did receive the $5 million advance associated with Spider-man 4. That keeps Sony in line with actually releasing this picture within the normal time period."

They got the cash up front? Hell yeah. I'm all for Spidey 4, it won't be hard to out preform the third movie.

If I remember my rumors correctly, it will be without Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. I wonder who will get that new casting?

I don't care about Kristen Dunst, since I think she's quite unattractive. But why is Toby leaving the franchise? It's given him more fame and money than probably all his other movies combined. (although, I think Pleasantville is a more entertaining movie than Spiderman)

I've always hated her. She was the worst part of the franchise.

Yeah I don't think she's done a film I really liked bar Spiderman one, that film she did with Orlando Bloom was pretty retarded as well...

Her best role was in Interview with a Vampire. Her best movie outside of Spider-Man was Bring It On...of course that had nothing to do with acting. :shifty:

It's a fabulous new day, yes it is!
But Robin Williams carried Jumanji's ass, not Dunst.

Probably Dunst's best movies outside the Spidey franchise would be either Elizabethtown or The Virgin Suicides.

Nikki Finke dropped a goblin bomb on Friday in her Deadline Hollywood column. According to her sources director Sam Raimi and leading man Tobey Maguire are signed to return to the franchise that made them great and film 'Spider-Man 4'.

The movie will utilize 'Zodiac' writer James Vanderbilt's screenplay.

The news reaches Finke just weeks after she'd heard Sony was shopping around for a new star, since Tobey was apparently playing hard to get.

The above info was subsequently corroborated by The Hollywood Reporter which also reports that the studio is contemplating shooting 4 and 5 back-to-back, which may relieve many fans who felt that the over-stuffed third film should have been told over two installments. From the studio standpoint it's all about managing costs.

The Reporter's account refutes the idea that Sony was shopping replacements for Peter Parker however.

"The studio never considered any other actor. Tobey was our only choice and the only person we've discussed the role with," Sony spokesman Steve Elzer said.

Principle photography is slated for fall of 2009, plenty of time to hit the May 2011 deadline. Finke says the studio is keeping the villain and the casting thereof quiet, with insiders telling her "once you find out who the villain is, you'll know who's playing it.". Presumably this means that it's someone we've already seen in th previous movies.

Fans know that Dylan Baker has been present as Dr. Curt Conners, who later becomes The Lizard, a classic Spidey villain that would appeal to Raimi's sensibilities.  Of course, actor Daniel Gillies also appeared as John Jameson, who transforms into the Man-Wolf in 'Amazing Spider-Man' #124. That would be a less classic choice and it's hard to imagine either character carrying the emotional weight of the movie's first two villains.

Let's not rule out a return by Willem Dafoe either. Norman Osborn has been ressurected in the comics, so why not on film as well?

And hey, is it too far-fetched to imagine some version of the clone saga happening with Tobey in a dual (quadrupal) role? Yes...yes we hope it is too far-fetched.

Kirsten Dunst is not signed at this point but Mary Jane is in the script and Finke's sources say the role will not be recast.

That's good news keeping the same Parker/Spidey. I wouldn't mind seeing a new Mary Jane.

It would be too much of a hassle to bring in most of the elements of the Clone Saga, but just bringing in Ben Reilly to mindfuck Parker into thinking he's the clone would be great, and with Norman still alive, masterminding the entire thing. Through the course of this Gwen can be killed of near the end of the fourth movie, and Reilly killed in the ending climatic battle of the fifth movie, to draw on the emotional part. Throw in at least one more villain to flesh the movie out, shouldn't be a clusterfuck with the story being told over the course of two movies.

I'm really surprised we haven't seen The Black Cat. Sexy chicks always do well in movies.

What about Kraven or Morbius? Any opinions on them?

Oh Kraven would be great, they must get him in a movie. He'll be hunting Spider-Man then all of a sudden "OH NOES BITCH THERE'S TWO SPIDER-MANS U GOTTA DEAL WITH!"

Maybe not that urban, but you get the idea

I'd like to see the teasings of a Sinister Six.

Like maybe have Kingpin debut and use his money and influence to make Vulture, Scorpion, and Rhino (all guys who could be explained by their suits to keep it real) - with Kingpin being the main villain.

They could even introduce Black Cat. Maybe she was a fourth in the team turned hero halfway through?

The only thing is, Vulture and pals would have to be pretty simple villains since there would be far too much time required to develop Kingpin and Black Cat. And they would seriously risk making the same mistake they did with Spider-Man 3 and make too much going on so that little sticks out at all.

Well, if they use Ving Rhames as Kingpin again, they won't have to develop him too much.

More on Tobey signing...

Quote:

Well, at least one of them's coming back. Peter Parker's big screen alter ego Tobey Maguire has signed on to return as the webslinger in the next two Spider-Man flicks, tentatively named.....Spider-Man 4 and 5. And just like an amazing father would do, Maguire negotiated with Sony to have some "family time" in his contract so he could spend some quality time with his 22-month-old daughter Ruby. According to the report, Tobey's buddy said:

"Tobey admits he is obsessive-compulsive about everything he does, and raising Ruby is no different.  There’s no way Tobey would allow work, no matter how well paid, to get between him and Ruby, and Sony realized that.”

Sony chairman Amy Pascal said that it would be "unfair" if Tobey's career hindered the actor from spending some quality time with his family. Right on, Tobey! Now you can put that frown upside down.

Different article with more detail:

Quote:

An article in UK's Times Online delves into the details of Tobey Maguire's deal to return for back-to-back 'Spider-Man' sequels. According to the report the actor stands to bank $50 million to film parts 4 and 5 of the franchise.

The article actually states that the $50 million figure is part salary and part profit sharing. 'Spider-Man 3' proved that the movies don't have to be good to make money, so Tobey is likely to rake in the full amount on the two films.

However, key to the deal was the allocation of "family time" to Maguire, who has a young daughter. Word is that shooting back-to-back films is a grueling process that takes its toll on the leading man . Keanu Reeves is cited in the article as being drained by the 'Matrix' movies.

The 'Spider Man 4 and 5' shoot is set for a six month period in 2009. Tobey will have "early mornings and evenings" off, according to the report.

The article also suggests that the Kirsten Dunst question will be settled this week.

splashpage.mtv.com

'Spider-Man' actress Kirsten Dunst is out making the rounds promoting her new movie 'How to Lose Friends and Alienate People' with Simon Pegg. MTV Splash Page asked the actress if she'd yet signed on for the recently announced 4th and 5th installments to the franchise.

"I'm in," was Dunsts response.

However, when pressed for details Dunst backpedaled a bit adding, "I'm not saying anything, I know there's rumors…"

Simon Pegg broke the awkward tension by jumpingin and proclaiming that he too is "in", although he was clearly having fun with the press.

I hope not. She was the worst part of the movies for me...including emo Parker.

Well, if they use Ving Rhames as Kingpin again, they won't have to develop him too much.

The Kingpin is under the Daredevil Liscense so that probably won't happen. Tombstone would make a good subsitute though.

Considering Professor Connors kept a part of the symbiote in the third movie there's still a possibility of Carnage as a villian. Hopefully they would do better character work with him if they choose him.
