'Spider-Man' director Sam Raimi was recently hired to direct another installment of the franchise that made him great, and possible helm parts 4 and 5 of the series at the same time.

This week the director talked about his plans and the various rumors surrounding the films.

"It would be a real endurance test, probably only Peter Jackson knows how hard something like that would be," Raimi told MTV Splash Page about the prospect of back-to-back sequels. "If Tobey and me, and all the producers, like the story for two pictures and Amy wanted to do it, then we would do it. It just hasn’t been written yet."

Tobey Maguire has also been locked to return to the role of Peter Parker. Raimi said he'd love to bring Kirsten Dunst back and can't imagine doing a sequel without her, a vague statement that makes it seem as if the actress has not yet been signed for the sequels. He also hinted that James Franco may return, even though his Harry Osborn character was killed off in the most recent film. Guys like Cliff Robertson and Willem Dafoe have gotten steady work in spite of having died in the first movie.

Raimi also talked about the Dylan Baker, who has been a bit of an elephant in the room for parts 2 and 3. Baker plays Dr. Curt Conners, who fans know well transforms into the classic villain The Lizard at some point. Will Spidey's scaly and tragic foil finally appear?

"He’s a great actor, and I think one day The Lizard’s story will be told," Raimi told MTV, still holding his cards close to the vest. "I don’t know if it will be this one or not. I just don’t know. I’m definitely hoping to work with Dylan in the picture. I just don’t know who the villain is yet."

Raimi points to March 2010 as the production start for 'Spider-Man 4'.

They need to just do two things already:

- Debut The Lizard (I'm so tired of them saying he might be a villain)
- Kill Mary Jane

Then it's all gravy, baby.

A four and fiver two-parter would be a great chance to bring in the Sinister Six and Black Cat, which I want to see both of. I want to see guys like Scorpion, Vulture, and Rhino in the Six (all would make sense too since all could be explained by technology and "experiments"). I'd even love to see Black Cat in the six and turn good or something (maybe be a villain and tweener in the first, then a tweener and hero in the second).

I have always thought that Batman and Spider-Man had the best rouges gallery. That's why they could make about 12 parts to each if they wanted to.

There's a Pulitzer-prize winning playwright trying his hand at the screenplay for 'Spider-Man 4'. David Lindsay-Abaire, known for his stage drama 'Rabbit Hole' is set to pen a draft of the script, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The trades reveal nothing of the film's plot or villain, and don't even provide much in the way of insights about James Vanderbilt's previous 'Spider-Man 4' script. Vanderbilt (best known for 'Zodiac') was said to have come to Sony with a two-part pitch that laid out 4 and 5 as back-to-back efforts.

The hiring of Lindsay-Abaire follows the tradition of bringing is high-brow writers to punch up the human drama after the Hollywood hitmakers turn in their drafts. Multiple-Oscar winner Alvin Sargent had a hand in all three previous Spidey scripts, and Pulitzer prize-winning novelist Michael Chabon did an uncredited pass at 'Spider-Man 2'.

Director Sam Raimi and leading man Tobey Maguire are signed on to return to the franchise. 'Spider-Man 4' is targeted for a May 2011 release.

In an interview with MTV at Sundance, actor J.K. Simmons (J. Jonah Jameson) has revealed that Spider-Man 4 will indeed begin shooting in 2010. Says Simmons:

"I saw Sam [Raimi] at his Christmas party. We've definitely brainstormed ideas for Triple-J, but I have no desire to make Triple-J more of the focus of those movies," he said. "The amount that I did in 1, 2 and 3, is just exactly right. Like be the wolf. Come in, blow in, do a week, blow out, be the comic relief, and hit the road. And let Tobey and everybody else do the heavy lifting."

This bit of news is consistent with the long-held speculation that this fourth installment of the Spider-Man film franchise is set for a May 2011 release date.

With strong rumors that the villains of the film are set to be Morbius and the Lizard, hopefully director Sam Raimi will be able to clean up the mess of a storyline that was left after Spider-Man 3. (A dead Harry Osborne, and after like 15 minutes of screen time, a dead Venom.) Considering the rumored villains, there will likely be a theme of genetic engineering and the "dangers of playing God." We have seen Dylan Baker as Dr. Curt Connors in Spiderman 2 & 3. Now, he will likely get his moment in the spotlight as the character fulfills his destiny of becoming the victim of a failed genetic experiment to re-grow his lost arm, transforming him into the Lizard. Morbius on the other hand, is a "living vampire" who in the comics became that way due to a chemical experiment gone awry. However, his origin will likely be altered to have some connection to the Lizard's.

You know what, though? Nothing officially has been confirmed as of yet. However, in the interview, Simmons said of his role as J.J. Jameson, that he had to "be the wolf." Now, anyone familiar with the Spider-Man lore knows that J.J.'s son John (featured in Spider-Man 2 as Mary Jane's BF) is an astronaut who brings home a magical moon rock, transforming him into the deadly Spider-Man foe, Man-Wolf. Mmmmm. Coincidence? Subtle hint? Freudian slip? Rumor-mongering? Absolutely nothing? (And for the record, while making Man-Wolf the villain would allow Raimi to return to his horror roots, it would be extremely wrong.)

I just want to see Black Cat. And a dead Mary Jane. That's all I care about in the movies now since they dropped the ball with Venom (he seriously should've only been teased in 3 then made the primary villain of 4). Although I'll probably never get to see either.

It would be nice to see the Lizard finally, if only so they stop talking about us maybe seeing the Lizard every time a Spider-Man movie is coming out.

Morbius, though? Eh. I've never been a fan. I love vampires, but Morbius has always seemed kind of lame to me. Like a C list villain. He's better than Man-Wolf, though.

I'm all for The Lizard...but Morbius? :-/

I actually wouldn't mind seeing MJ getting killed in this movie. One concept I always figured would be cool is if they went through the whole, Spider-Man evolving into a spider-storyline they did in the comics (Not the Other, the one earlier)

Any opinions on Carnage?

I use to be a real Carnage fan back when I was much younger. I still have a bit of a soft spot for him, so I've been kind of looking forward to his appearance in the films. I think it was because he was a real psychopathic badass. I can't remember if it extends beyond that though. :-/

Big tax incentives in Michigan have been luring filmmakers like Clint Eastwood, Drew Barrymore and others to the mitten state to film their latest movies. Now, according to an article in the Oakland Press, it appears native son Sam Raimi has designs to bring 'Spider-Man 4' to his hometown.

Foremost, Raimi is looking to lens another movie, a remake of the Danish horror flick 'Room 205' in Michigan under his Ghost House Pictures banner but he said he hopes to lens some of the Marvel superhero flick here as well.

"I’ll be looking at Michigan for our second-unit photography on the new ‘Spider-Man’ film," he confirmed.

The director apparently considered filming parts of 'Spider-Man 3' in the Detroit area, but couldn't reconcile the city's look with the New York City setting of the movie.

"It was cheaper to shoot in Ohio because the streets we were shooting on had storefronts that looked a little bit more like New York than Detroit did," Raimi explained. "But if the incentives Michigan has now had been in place, we would have had the money to adapt a set in Detroit."

I like Carnage. A lot people don't though seeing him as some sort of excessive character from the 90s or whatever. I personally think he's one of the more memorable Spider-Man villains. Not on the level of say Venom or Doc Ock, but much more than Morbius or Man-Wolf.

The only thing is that bringing him into a Spider-Man movie would probably be too much of a similar thing to Venom for most audiences and would undoubtedly be used against it. I think that's part of the reason why they didn't have Harry Osborn become the Green Goblin or even Hobgoblin, instead becoming that weird New Goblin thing (which was okay, but kinda lame and underwhelming overall).

Carnage could be a good enemy in a Venom movie, though. Even though I still have no idea how they can ever make a Venom movie, at least with Eddie Brock in it. It has to tie in to Spider-Man somehow to make sense (since he has his abilities and all), but doing so and having Eddie wouldn't make sense. Plus it'd probably be overkill with the concept anyway since a lot of people would see Venom as just another Spider-Man or whatever. :-/

Sony Corp.’s Columbia Pictures said in a statement that it has scrapped plans to release “Spider-Man 4” next year, opting instead to “reboot” the popular franchise in 2012, with a film that does not represent a continuation of the storyline kicked off in 2002’s “Spider-Man.”

Also out, along with the old narratives, are star Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi, both of whom have been central to each of the three installments. Together, “Spider-Man,” “Spider-Man 2” and “Spider-Man 3” have taken in nearly $2.5 billion at the box office world wide.

Neither the new film’s title, star nor director were not named.

Production had not yet begun on “Spider-Man 4,” the statement said. But rumors of creative problems with “Spider-Man 4” have surfaced in recent days. One area of concern was said to be the film’s script, by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee, who was behind many of the original “Spider-Man” comic books. The new film was written by James Vanderbilt, who also wrote 2007’s “Zodiac.”

Though they have generated massive receipts at the box office, the “Spider-Man” films have also been incredibly expensive to produce, thanks to high costs for talent and special effects. People close to the studio said “Spider-Man 3” cost between $250 million and $300 million to produce, making any new installment a costly gamble, despite the franchise’s strong track record.

The company offered few details about the film it is now planning to make, except to say that it would focus on the high school years of Peter Parker, the New Yorker who becomes Spider Man after being bitten by a radioactive spider. That same period in the character’s life was also the focus of the 2002 “Spider-Man.” The studio said it plans to release the new film in summer 2012, with preparations for production commencing “in the coming weeks.”

Sony licenses the rights to make movies about the Spider Man character from Marvel Entertainment, the comic book publisher and movie studio that earlier this month was acquired for $4.3 billion by Walt Disney Co. As Marvel has on the previous “Spider-Man” films, Disney is to receive a royalty on the forthcoming installment.

IESB.net has thrown another name into the casting hat for Marc Webb's 'Spider-Man' reboot. According to their unnamed sources, Josh Hutcherson is another name on the short list to play Peter Parker in the film.

You may have seen Hutcherson recently in movies like 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' or 'Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant'. He's also apparently gotten good notices for his turn in the upcoming Sundance darling 'The Kids Are All Right' and will appear with Thor in 'Red Dawn'.

Hutcherson's representatives had not responded to IESB's inquiries at the time of the report.

CULVER CITY, Calif., July 1, 2010 – After a comprehensive worldwide casting search, Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker when Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012. The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.

Today’s confirmation culminates what has been one of the most eagerly anticipated casting announcements in recent memory. Bloggers, pop culture speculators, and everyday fans have pored over and analyzed every conceivable online rumor in an attempt to discover the identity of the next actor to play Peter Parker. Garfield will immediately begin preparing for the coveted role.

The Spider-Man franchise is one of the most successful in film history and the three previous motion pictures have collectively grossed more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office.

On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”

Commenting on the announcement, Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, President of Columbia Pictures said, “Spider-Man is a classic superhero -- a young man who balances his responsibility to serve humanity and crush evil with the shyness and normalcy of someone struggling to find himself. The role demands an extraordinary actor. You need someone who can magically transform himself from Peter Parker into Spider-Man. An actor who will depict the vulnerability of youth and the strength and confidence of a legendary figure at the same moment. We have found that actor in Andrew Garfield. From the first time we saw him in the upcoming film The Social Network, to his glorious screen test, which floored all of us, we knew that we had found our new Peter Parker.”

Producer Avi Arad added, “I’m incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield. In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive, and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry, and cheer. We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future.”

Producer Laura Ziskin said, “We are thrilled to have Andrew Garfield for this new incarnation of Spider-Man under Marc Webb’s direction. We were fortunate enough to meet with a group of fantastically talented young men. In the end, we all agreed that in addition to being an extraordinary actor, Andrew had the right mix of humor, youth, and pathos, along with an underlying sense of strength and power necessary to bring Peter Parker and Spider-Man to life on screen.”

The selection of Garfield was revealed at a press event in Cancun, Mexico for international journalists attending a media tour promoting upcoming films from Sony Pictures Entertainment. B-roll footage of the announcement will be available via satellite later this evening -- see uplink times coordinate information below.

Garfield is fast becoming one of the most respected and sought-after young actors working in the industry today. In a short career, spanning only five years, he has already been directed by, and starred alongside, some of the greatest names and received a BAFTA for a role that won him international praise.

Garfield most recently worked with director David Fincher on the upcoming film The Social Network. He previously starred for Spike Jonze on his robot love story I’m Here, which premiered at Sundance this year. He plays the lead male opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan in Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go, due for release later this year.

Other notable screen credits include Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus playing opposite Christopher Plummer, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Jude Law and the late Heath Ledger, Robert Redford’s Lions For Lambs, where he starred alongside Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep; Revolution Films’ “Red Riding Trilogy – 1974” directed by Julian Jarrold, where he lead a stellar cast including Rebecca Hall and David Morrissey, and his unforgettable portrayal of a young ex-con in John Crowley’s “Boy A,” for which he earned the best actor BAFTA in 2008.

Garfield’s career began in theatre and in 2006 his performances in “Beautiful Thing” (Sound Space/Kit Productions), “The Overwhelming,” and “Burn / Chatroom / Citizenship” (Royal National Theatre) won him the Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer at the Evening Standard awards and the Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer at the Critics Circle Theatre Awards. Other notable theatre credits include “Romeo and Juliet” (Manchester Royal Exchange) and “Kes” (Manchester Royal Exchange), for which he received the Most Promising Newcomer Award at the Manchester Evening News Awards 2004.

I have no idea who he is (a plus?), but after a quick Google Image Search, I have to say he looks the part. I could take him as a geeky high school kid a lot better than I could Tobey (although I am a fan of Tobey's Peter/Spidey).

I'm very curious who else is cast. I'm going to be very hard to convince when it comes to the role of J. Jonah Jameson. They had the absolute perfect JJJ in the last trilogy. So perfect, I picture his voice and image whenever I think/read/hear about JJJ. I understand they want to recast everyone, but they really should reconsider him.

And the guy who played Dr. Connors, if only because they kept leading him on that he'd get to be the Lizard only to fuck him over when it's all said and done.

I still don't see the point in a re-boot, the last film was only three years ago and quite frankly I'm not too interested in seeing Spider-Mans whole origin story again, I mean come on... who doesn't know how Spider-Man got his powers. I'm also not interested in seeing "how Peter Parker developed his powers in high school". I'll try and hold off judgement though until I've at least seen a trailer though :hmmp:

So long Mary Jane, we won't need you messing up the intricate webs of Peter Parker's hormones. So says Sony Pictures with their planned reboot of the Spider-Man saga. After a decade of seeing Sam Raimi's vision circle around the webslinger and his iconic girlfriend, Heat Vision reports that producers and director Marc Webb will be meeting with some young female thespians this weekend for the chance to star opposite Andrew Garfield in their remake of the classic comic hero. And those actresses won't be trying out for MJ.

Beyond saying that Jane isn't the character vying for Peter's attention, the trade doesn't specify whether this weekend's audition is for Gwen Stacy (played by Bryce Dallas Howard in Raimi's Spider-Man 3), Black Cat's Felicia Hardy, or some new character that piques the love interest of Spidey.

They do say who's in the running for this new role though and it's not the previously rumored Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Instead, it's being reported that Imogen Poots (Fright Night), Ophelia Lovibond (Nowhere Boy), Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four), Lilly Collins (Priest) and Emma Roberts (Scream 4) are all set to try out for the mysterious new part.

Yesterday, Sony announced Welsh actor & musician Rhys Ifans as the latest star to join the upcoming 3D Spider-Man reboot. And while the role was undisclosed, The Wrap has learned that...

"Rhys Ifans will play Dr. Curt Connors, better known as The Lizard, in Marc Webb's "Spider-Man" reboot"

While Phillip Seymour Hoffman was rumored for Eddie Brock, Venom, the Wraps' source says that the character would not be appearing in this film, but could show up in sequels. As many know, Secretariat actor Dylan Baker portrayed Dr. Curt Connors in Sam Raimi's trilogy, but evidently never got the opportunity to show the character's true colors; or scales in this case.

I still can't help but think what a Spider-man 4 with the Lizard would have been like, I mean they'd been building up to that villain since the second film.

Sony continues to cast Marc Webb's 3D Spider-Man reboot at a leisurely pace. With Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans cast as Peter Parker, Gwen Stacy and the as-yet-unconfirmed villain respectively, the rumor mill is now turning its attention to the casting of J. Jonah Jameson.

While C2F would be all in favor of bringing back J.K. Simmons, who filled the role perfectly in the old franchise, we do realize change must come and WhatsPlaying.com.au claims to have the inside word on two actors who are at the forefront of the JJJ race.

Silver-haired Mad Men player John Slattery is said to be a top contender. Marvel fans have seen him previously playing Tony Stark's father in some found archive footage in Iron Man 2. Of course, Slattery's persona is one of suave sophistication, not the bellowing blowhard that Jameson is.

Another contender is also a Marvel movie alum. Sam Elliot is a bit more on the Jameson model. Fans know well that he appeared in Hulk and Ghost Rider. He definitely has a good look for the character and a more imposing presence than Slattery.

However, neither man may get the role. WhatsPlaying says there are a dozen or so actors reading for the part and more to come so it's still an open field.

And speaking of Marc Webbi's Spider-Man, two big bits of casting news emanated forth from the Heat Vision blog yesterday afternoon.

First up: actor Martin Sheen is said to be in final negotiations for the role of Uncle Ben in the movie. Final negotiations are the phase in which the talent has, for all intents and purposes, committed to the part and it's now in the hands of the lawyers to finalize the fine details.

Shortly after the Sheen story broke, Heat Vision followed up with the news that Sally Field is in early talks to play Aunt May in the movie.

Should both actors be cast, it'll prove a distinctive break from the traditional vision of Peter Parker's elderly caretakers, particularly for Aunt May role who has been depicted in the past as white haired and often described as frail. However, the pair are more consistent with the Ultimate Spider-Man comics, which had the couple behaving as more modern adults.

Uncle Ben, in any version, is a strong, wise character. In the Ultimate take he was also a bit of a hipster, sporting a pony-tail and a more youthful outlook on the world. It's not hard to imagine Martin Sheen bringing his confident, avuncular persona (as we saw for many years on The West Wing) to this production.

And Ultimate Aunt May is no fragile figure, demonstrating herself as a strong guardian for her impressionable teenage ward, and a defender of Spider-Man once Peter's secret became known to her. Sally Field can fill this role just fine.

The pair would join Andrew Garfield as Peter, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as the movie’s unnamed villain. Marc Webb is directing. Cameras roll soon!
