With a client like Bitcomet... they're small files that are used in file sharing, it's like Limewire but with a different way of downloading the files... you get the torrent file from isohunt or mininova or whereever, it runs on the client and then depending on how many people are sharing you get your file... |

Isn't it true that such peer-2-peer networks are rather unsafe owing to the number of viruses and, er, illegal files floating around? |

I don't think the former is true. Though it is logical to think that viruses can come with certain files, and the fact that files may not be what they say they are (like if you download an episode of a TV show or something and it comes up as a porn clip), but they are safe if you know how to detect one from the other. |

Limewire yes, you'll run into viruses if you're not careful, But as for torrents, no, for the most part it's safe. From personal experience I've never downloaded a virus...If you're worried about viruses, there's usually a comment section that you can read and check if the torrent is safe. Though for beginners there are certain files types you'd do well to stay away from. There are illegal files floating around, it would be up to you to make sure that what you're downloading is legal. |

Generally on most torrent sites (since you won't be the first to find said torrent usually) someone might leave a comment like 'OMG3H!!!! THIS IS A VIRU5!!!' or something stupid. General common sense usually rules. Then on the other hand if you buy a mac, you really won't ever have to worry about virus'

I don't have a mac ![]() Another question regarding P2P networks in general. I read that using P2P networks (Limewire, Ares, etc) leaves you open and vulnerable. Since you sharing with others, then it is easy for them to get your IP address to find your location and/or get into your computer and find any personal information. I've read that this is what allowed federal agents to sue people downloading songs from Napster a few years ago (back before you had to pay) and I've heard this is how a lot of identity theft takes place. I don't know how true this is. Since several people apparently use P2P networks, how true are these rumors? Does this leave you open to identity theft and easy-tracking? |

I am not sure about the claims you make, but it is realy easy to get someones IP via torrent downloading as well. In reality if you look at how many people use P2P and various other downloading programs, the likelihood of something happening to you is quite slim. I would like to think that time and age is close to being over. There will always be those hardcore hackers that people will be hardpressed to be stopped. The day of the casual hacker IMHO is over. |

So, Cybrus, did you ever get the Torrents working? If so, what are you using to play them? |
