Here's a bit of 'Avengers' casting buzz that's sure get fans talking. Eva Longoria as Janet Van Dyne, aka The Wasp.

Oh No They Didn't celebrity gossip and paparazzi blog snapped some incriminating photos of the 'Desperate Housewives' star that suggest she may be taking on the part.

In the photos, Longoria is seen in the parking garage of the building where Marvel Entertainment keeps their Hollywood offices. Presumably, Longoria has just met with the filmmakers. Clearly visibile in her hands a stack of Avengers comics.

Posted Image

Now we know the 'Avengers' movie is supposed to include Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor and Ant Man, each of which character is or will be top-lining its own movie before 'Avengers' comes out. But the above roster makes for kind of a sausage party and Ant Man's sugar mama The Wasp has been part of the roll call since issue #1.

So, if Eva was meeting with Marvel and the meeting was about 'The Avengers' then it's pretty easy to imagine Longoria wearing the wings of the winsome Wasp. Her tough-but-pampered 'Housewives' character Gabby isn't too far removed from the long-suffering Wasp after all.

Does this mean she'll be appearing in Edgar Wright's 'Ant-Man' movie as well?

Let the speculation begin!

Marvel fans, be they old school or contemporary, know some version of the formation of 'The Avengers' and, invariably, those heroes have to band together to stop a rampage by the Incredible Hulk. So this battle will appear in the movie version of Marvel's flagship super team, right?

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige recently declined to confirm this potential storyline for MTV Splash page, but strongly hinted that it was possible.

"Here's the thing — it is all in the planning stages, but certainly if you look back to any number of ‘Hulk' comics, or 'Avengers' comics, or 'The Ultimates' comics or the 'Ultimate Avengers' DVD that we released, it certainly makes a hell of a sequence," Feige said of the anticipated battle.

"To have all of the Avengers going up against a green goliath?" he teased. "I think that would be very cool to see that on the screen."

In the same conversation, Feige also said there are no immediate plans to do another 'Hulk' movie.

Please, please, please....

It's official!

Marvel has announced that Robert Downey Jr. will fulfill his four picture deal with Marvel Studios by appearing as Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, in both 'Iron Man 2' and 'The Avengers'.

Jon Favreau is also locked to return to the directors chair for 'Iron Man 2' and will serve as an executive producer the Marvel super-team film.

The studio has also made official the casting of Don Cheadle as Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes in 'Iron Man 2'. The actor is also on board for 'The Avengers' and will play the character in any Iron movies beyond part 2. As readers know well, Cheadle replaces Terrence Howard in the role.

"We are very excited about working with the extraordinarily talented Don Cheadle as we expand the role of Rhodey in Iron Man 2. It has already become apparent as we prep the movie for production, that the dynamic between Robert and Don will take Iron Man 2 to new heights," said Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios.

Here's the official log line for 'The Avengers':

In a movie event, THE AVENGERS will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they've ever faced.

It's interesting to note that Marvel specifically calls out the Hulk, but is not yet ready to announce Edward Norton as part of the package.

And, conspicuously absent from the above are Ant Man and the Wasp, both of whom have been speculated as being part of the line up. Those characters could certainly be part of the "and more" though.

'Iron Man 2' is due in theaters May 7, 2010. 'The Avengers' is slated for July 15, 2011.

Cheadle is represented by UTA. Downey and Favreau are represented by CAA.

Source: MTV News

MTV News caught up with Robert Downey Jr. to let him know he's the actor they're most thankful for in 2008. Thankfully for fans, they got him talking about 'Iron Man 2', 'Iron Man 3' and 'The Avengers' as well.

For the sequel, Downey said fans can look forward to getting under the armor of Tony Stark.

"It's one thing to say you're Iron Man, but what does it actually mean to become someone that can shoulder that responsibility? As we noticed at the end, he's still not even responsible enough to read off the card that Shield and the government have given him," the actor said. "He still can't help doing his own thing. He'll have to come to terms with that. I think we could have more excitement.

"We could use a love triangle or two. I think it's really important to keep up that idea of Tony's interfacing with inanimate objects. He's at his greatest ease when he's faced with machines. I would love to see a little shout-out to the fact that he's an MIT graduate. I love the idea of him inviting over a bunch of super-nerds from MIT who wind up figuring into ['Iron Man 3'] a little bit."

As far as how the movies relate to the big 'Avengers' team up Downey said, "It seems natural that ['Iron Man 2'] would at least introduce that factor. My inclination is to bring it another step. The danger you run with colliding all these worlds is that Jon was very certain that 'Iron Man' should be set in a very realistic way. Nothing that happened in 'Iron Man' is really outside the realm of possibility. Once you start talking about Valhalla and supersized super soldiers and jolly green giants, it warrants much further discussion."

Regardless of the difficulty of blending films with differing tones into one mega-movie, Downey says he understands how much 'The Avengers' movie means to fans and to the studio that's producing it.

"That means if we don't get it right, it's really going to suck. It has to be the crowning blow of Marvel's best and brightest, because it's the hardest thing to get right. It's tough to spin all the plates for one of these characters," Downey said.

Zak Penn has apparently finished a draft of Marvel's 'Avengers' super-film. We know this thanks to the twitterings of on Joe Quesada, Editor and Chief at the comics publisher.Yesterday he posted this:

"Definition of 'goose bumps.' Pressing enter and watching a screenplay entitled 'AVENGERS' come out of my printer."

Goosebumps indeed. When Marvel announced their ambitious plans to produce a series of shared-universe superhero films that built into a super-team movie (a la the classic comics) we have to admit that C2F is a little skeptical they'd be able to corral all their leading actors into a tent-pole, ensemble, summer F/X extravaganza. The movie is still years away, but we can't help but be excited by this first milestone.

Quesada quickly added, "It's official, I have the greatest job in the world."

So, the problem with running crap stories on April Fools is that when you have a good scoop, your readers may not know what to make of it. IESB.net, who ran four of the above fake headlines had to put a bunch of "Not an April Fools Joke!!!" notices in the headline of today's very interesting scoop about 'The Avengers' movie.

Their source -- which is the same source that first tipped the site to the story that Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man 4' was unraveling -- claims to know one of the names at the top of the short list for Marvel's mega movie.

That name? Joss Whedon.

Whedon is definitely popular among fans for doing some great things in genre entertainment ('Buffy' of course being one, and 'Firefly/Serenity' being a C2F fave). He also did a polish on the original 'X-Men' movie (credit due for most of the good dialogue) and tried his hand at developing 'Wonder Woman' for the big screen.

And he's got an extensive body of work writing in comics, having adapted his own TV characters, as well as working on Marvel's 'Astonishing X-Men' and 'The Runaways'.

IESB has not yet confirmed the news with Whedon's camp, but aims to do so some time today.

IESB.net broke the news at the top of the month that Joss Whedon was a contender to direct Marvel's mega-movie 'The Avengers'. Although the story ran amid a flurry of bogus April Fools postings, IESB assured it's readers that the story was not a hoax.

Yesterday confirmation of the news came from multiple sources, first and foremost the typically reliable Deadline.com. That site reports that Marvel Studios are in final negotiations with Whedon to direct the movie.

Deadline lists Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Samuel L. Jackson among the actors starring in the movie, playing Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Nick Fury respectively. We also understand that Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hiddleston and Clark Gregg will be on hand as War Machine, Black Widow, Loki and SHIELD Agent Coulson. Nobody is saying for sure if Edward Norton will come into the fold as Bruce Banner or if his CG counterpart the Hulk will appear as previously expected.

Variety also confirms the news and also adds info that Whedon is now doing his director's polish on Zak Penn's script for the film.

'The Avengers' will assemble on the big screen on May 4, 2012 with Paramount pictures distributing. Whedon will likely start rolling cameras on the film early next year.

Good news...

Chatting with MovieWeb.com, Marvel Studios Pres Kevin Feige addressed the question of whether or not Hulk will be in 'The Avengers' movie.

"We certainly plan on it. He was there in The Avengers #1 and in The Ultimates #1 so certainly the Hulk is a key part of these films leading up to 'The Avengers'. 'Iron Man 2' has some clues to where these timelines take place as they relate to each other. So I certainly think Hulk will be a player on that team."

But what about Ed Norton as Bruce Banner? Feige said that's a function of story demands and also the actor's schedule.

"So we reserve the right to say Hulk will be in it for sure, we'll see about Banner."

The Avengers is still a long way off, but it’s never too early to start laying some ground rules. As with any superhero movie, we’re filled with a mixture of excitement and fear. After all, this isn’t a Ghost Rider or Blade movie; these are Earth’s Mightiest Heroes we’re talking about. If you’re gonna do it, you gotta do it right. With that in mind, we respectfully submit our rules for an Avengers movie.

5. Include the Hulk
We loved The Incredible Hulk, but it underperformed at the box office and ol’ Jade Jaws’ inclusion in the big team-up movie has been in question ever since. But if you’re talking about earth’s mightiest, there are none mightier than the Hulk and if you’re talking about an Avengers movie, you have to use him. First and foremost, he’s a founding member and secondly, he’s one of Marvel’s most recognizable characters.

Whether its continuity or toy sales that motivate the Hulk being in the movie, it’s hard to argue with putting Hulk in the movie, either on the team or against it.

4. A Titanic Tone
Getting the tone right doesn’t just mean making sure it’s an action-packed epic. We want to see characters that are true to the way they’re portrayed in their own films as well as the way they’re portrayed in the comics. Internal conflict has been present in the series since day one, with the Hulk quitting the team by the end of the second issue and Hawkeye squabbling with Cap from the moment he joined the team. Anything different just wouldn’t be the Avengers.

Speaking of Hawkeye, make sure you keep up with the Easter eggs! Both Iron Man and Hulk (as well as the X-Men films) were noted for their references to the larger Marvel Universe. We’d like to see that continued with the inclusion of secondary characters. Even if it’s a simple cameo by S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Clay Quartermain or a scene with Bruce Banner on Dr. Leonard Samson’s couch, these little moments serve to create a greater continuity and enhance the overall film.

But we also need to see a film that feels huge and important. Think Avatar, 300 or Lord of the Rings – an epic adventure where the fate of the world is at stake and every man, woman and child in the theater is on the edge of their seat, gripping the armrests the entire length of the film.

3. Masters of Evil
“And there came a day unlike any other, when Earth’s mightiest heroes found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born–to fight the foes no single hero could withstand!”

In other words, this isn’t the type of film where a bald scientist makes a land grab. There’s got to be a reason why these heroes would join together, a threat so big that it takes Marvel’s biggest guns to combat it. A super-villain team up! Using villains introduced in the heroes’ own films, such as Whiplash, the Leader, Loki and Baron Zemo (or the Red Skull, if Zemo doesn’t make it into the Cap film), a group of the vilest villains should be assembled to really give the good guys a run for their money and ensure that it isn’t a one-sided fight.

2. It’s the Story, Stupid
Yes, we want big action. We want IMAX-sized excitement and threats worthy of the combined efforts of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and the Hulk. We want three different Iron Man armors and Hulk smashing through reinforced steel as though it were tissue paper. We demand to see Cap slingin’ that shield and bouncing it off of bad guys heads while Thor calls down the thunder and if all goes well, we’d love to see Ant Man and Wasp flyin’ around, bein’ all tiny and stuff. But by no means do we want any of this to come at the expense of a solid script.

If it’s nothing more than a slugfest, then you’ve just wasted a whole lot of money hiring talented actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle. Look, these are superhero movies–they don’t have to be Glengarry Glen Ross. But escapism doesn’t have to be mindless either.

1. Know Your Role
Sam Jackson’s cameo as Nick Fury at the end of Iron Man was a special treat and when we heard he’d signed on to continue the role in a billion more movies, we were ecstatic. But as much as we love the idea of the former leader of the Howling Commandos assembling the Avengers, we won’t be pleased if he’s running the show. Be they man, god, android, mutant, alien or supernatural being, there’s only one man to whom Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will answer. Only one mortal who has the authority to lead a billionaire playboy and an uru hammer-wielding deity into battle and that man’s name is Steve Rogers, better known to me and you as Captain America.

Not that our knees wouldn’t buckle when we heard the commanding voice of Samuel L. Jackson. Trust us, if he called, we’d come runnin’. But we hope the powers-that-be resist the urge to make the S.H.I.E.L.D. director the man in charge of the team. Nick Fury doesn’t lead the Avengers; Captain America does. Let’s see that reflected in the movies.

What do you want to see in the Avengers movie?

It turns out last week's rumblings about Jeremy Renner taking on the role of Hawkeye in Marvel's Avengers movie weren't just rehashing previous comments that the actor had made.

Heat Vision reports that the Hurt Locker actor is now in final negotiations to appear in the movie as Marvel comics' sharp-shooting scoundrel.

Hawkeye was introduced to Marvel Comics with Tales of Suspense #57 in which he was a presented as a villain, goaded into a confrontation with Iron Man thanks to the (also-then-villainous) Black Widow. A year later the archer switched sides and joined The Avengers, under the newly-thawed Captain America's leadership. The disciplined Cap and rebellious Hawkeye initially butted heads, but over the years a bond of mutual respect has formed.

Renner is still said to be angling for a role in P.T. Anderson's new movie. The Hawkeye part is said to be small enough where he could easily participate in Avengers while starring in the Anderson movie.

In his 2009 interview, Renner also said part of the Hawkeye role would involve him appearing in Thor.

"Final negotiations" usually refers to the the phase where both sides (Renner and Marvel) have made a handshake deal to do the project, but the lawyers and agents haven't worked out the formalities of the agreement.

Marvel declined to confirm for Heat Vision whether or not Renner is in negotiations.

Marvel Studios' master plan to link their heroes from independent films, will eventually lead to their most anticipated film of all, "The Avengers." And while the main Avengers Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) are all confirmed, Edward Norton's return as Bruce Banner, The Incredible Hulk, has been a mystery... until today.

According to Drew McWeeny, of HitFix, "Marvel Sources" the studio has decided they are going to cast an unknown to play Bruce Banner in "The Avengers."

Ever since Marvel and Norton's fallout over The Incredible Hulk situation, it was questioned whether Ed would return for a potential sequel and "Avengers." The studio's president Kevin Feige has been skeptical saying "it all depends on scheduling," when asked on the subject of Norton's return. Mcweeny says that Norton may have dropped out himself, but that would be a surprise considering Edward's stating in numerous interviews that he would be glad to play Bruce Banner again.

Mcweeny also includes that according to these same sources, Whedon (who is heavily being titled "The Avengers" director) has been meeting the cast, laying out his plans for the film, and so far everyone seems incredibly excited by what they're hearing. One of the people whom Whedon has met with was Norton. Both Whedon and Norton reported their enthusiasm back to Marvel, and according to some calls I made today, it sounds like Norton was making serious plans with his agency to keep his dates clear. And then nothing. Marvel made a decision to hire an unknown, and they informed Norton they won't be using him in the film. And that is evidently that.

With the San Diego Comic-Con starting in a few short weeks, Marvel Studios is expected to reveal loads of info on their upcoming films including "Avengers." Until then, we can only hope this isn't true.

The Avengers supposedly begins production February 2011 with the Hulk as a character, Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Chris Evans (Captain America), and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) confirmed, and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Nathan Fillion (Ant-Man), and Eva Longoria (Wasp) rumored. The film hits theaters May 4, 2012.

Edward Norton

As most of you know, I don't like to talk much about the business of making movies because it means a lot to me to protect the audience's fullest enjoyment of the 'magic' that films can have. But I am so appreciative of the outpouring of support from fans of the Hulk and the Avengers that I feel it would be rude not to respond. So here goes: It seems it won't work out for me to continue playing Bruce Banner for Marvel in "The Avengers." I sincerely hoped it could happen and be great for everyone but it hasn't turned out as we all hoped. I know this is disappointing to many people and that makes me sad. But I am very sincerely grateful to Marvel for extending the offer and even more so for giving me the chance to be a part of the Hulk's long and excellent history. And I really can't thank the fans enough for how much enthusiasm you've sent me way about what Louis and I tried to do in our turn with the legend. It means a lot to me. I grew up with Banner and Hulk and have been a fan of every incarnation. I'm really proud, and very blessed, to have been one of them and will be thrilled to see him live on through other actors. Hulk is bigger than all of us, that's why we love him, right?

Sincerely,
Edward Norton

Marvel are making a big mistake in my opinion by not rehiring Norton. I can't think of one person who didn't like his performance as Bruce Banner, so much for movie continuity :bored:

Here's alittle more on Norton.

Edward Norton won't be reprising his role as the Incredible Hulk in 2012's "The Avengers," a Marvel rep confirmed to Access Hollywood on Sunday.

Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige explained the decision in a statement to HitFix.

"We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in 'The Avengers,'" Feige told the site. "Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. 'The Avengers' demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks."

The actors referred to in the statement include current Marvel stars Robert Downey Jr. (" Iron Man "), Chris Hemsworth ("Thor), Chris Evans ("Captain America: The First Avenger"), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Scarlett Johansson (" Iron Man 2's" Black Widow), who are expected to reprise their superhero roles in team-up film "The Avengers."

A rep for Norton responded to the statement to Hitfix on Sunday, calling it "purposefully misleading" and claiming that his client had been in discussions to return to the role.

"This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light," the rep told the site. "Here are the facts: two months ago, Kevin called me and said he wanted Edward to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in 'The Avengers.' He told me it would be his fantasy to bring Edward on stage with the rest of the cast at [Comic-Con] and make it the event of the convention. When I said that Edward was definitely open to this idea, Kevin was very excited and we agreed that Edward should meet with [director] Joss Whedon to discuss the project. Edward and Joss had a very good meeting (confirmed by Feige to me) at which Edward said he was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble cast."

However, the rep further claimed, the talks fell apart last week.

"Marvel subsequently made him a financial offer to be in the film and both sides started negotiating in good faith," he told Hitfix. "This past Wednesday, after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided to go in another direction with the part. This seemed to us to be a financial decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings... We know a lot of fans have voiced their public disappointment with this result, but this is no excuse for Feige's mean spirited, accusatory comments. Counter to what Kevin implies here, Edward was looking forward to the opportunity to work with Joss and the other actors in the Avengers cast, many of whom are personal friends of his. Feige's statement is unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory. Mr. Norton talent, tireless work ethic and professional integrity deserve more respect, and so do Marvel's fans."

Norton played the role of Bruce Banner and his alter-ego, the Incredible Hulk , in 2008's " The Incredible Hulk ," a reboot/follow-up to 2003's "The Hulk ," which starred Eric Bana in the title role. Reports of a feud between the actor and the studio emerged along with the film, however, with Norton finally issuing a statement to Entertainment Weekly to address the rumors.

"Every good movie gets forged through collaboration, and different ideas among people who are all committed and respect the validity of each other's opinions is the heart of filmmaking," he told the mag in April 2008. "Regrettably, our healthy process, which is and should be a private matter, was misrepresented publicly as a 'dispute,' seized on by people looking for a good story, and has been distorted to such a degree that it risks distracting from the film itself."

With Marvel hosting panels at the San Diego Comic-Con International later this month, news on who will replace Norton - and perhaps further casting information - seems likely to emerge in the weeks to come.

SFX has rounded up comments made by Joss Whedon about The Avengers from their upcoming "Worlds of Whedon" special issue.

With regards to Marvel's level of creative control the director said, "There are definitely stipulations and restrictions, but Kevin Feige is very active as a producer and worked with me a lot on the story, but they are absolutely honouring the fact that this is my film."

He also praises Marvel studios for a style of filmmaking evidenced by the Iron Man movies, which allowed Robert Downey Jr. space to explore the character of Tony Stark rather than putting him through rigid paces.

Whedon says there's a real challenge in blending all the characters together in a way that the audience will accept, while still telling a compelling story. "By the way, there’s a thunder god. You guys are cool, right? This guy is big and green and this character wears an American flag. It’s all good, right? It’s totally real world.’ Finding the tone and plots that are coherent is what I go to bed thinking about and wake up thinking about, but it’s doable," he told SFX.

And while a mega movie like The Avengers will certainly be action-driven, Whedon recognizes the vast acting talent he has at his disposal for this movie.

"What I will struggle with, in the outline and throughout, is that I would like to put these actors in a room and just make Glengarry Glen Ross. We’re talking about really exciting people and at the same time I have to keep the momentum of the thing going. I can’t let it turn into a lull fest," Whedon said. "Knowing that I have enough time to do both of those things – that by the end of the movie you will feel ‘in’ with these guys – is the trick. It’s not an easy one but one that Marvel absolutely honours.

"They don’t hire Mark Ruffalo [the new Hulk] to say one iconic line and strike a pose. They hire him because he has so much humanity in him. He’s the antithesis of the iconic actor. He’s so human. He was my first choice to play the part, and the fact he is playing the part is nuts! They went to great lengths to make that happen and they understood exactly why he was right for the part."

Did Whedon have a part to play in Ed Norton not being brought back or does he mean his first choice after Norton had left, seems a bit shady to me :shifty:

Ain't it Cool points out a newspaper article which either tips a major story point for Marvel's Avengers movie, or simply amplifies a rumor that's gone round the net in the past.

According to an AICN reader, The Albuquerque Journal reported the following about the movie, which was announced last week to be calling New Mexico it's primary filming location:

"The Avengers script will blend Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger story lines as the Avengers battle with two alien races, the Skrulls and the Kree."

The Kree and Skrulls are, of course, Marvel's two most dominant alien races who are ever at war with one another. In the comics, The Avengers were draw into the conflict during Roy Thomas' much loved "Kree-Skrull War" storyline from the early seventies.

Now, this bit of info about the movie was expunged from the online version of the article, but at least on AICN reader has sent in a scan of the newspaper clipping to verify that it appeared in the printed edition.

So what does this mean? Did a reporter for the ABQ Journal learn something about Joss Whedon's script that the major movie news outlets didn't know? It's possible that some contact at Marvel let something slip.

Another equally likely possibility is that the mention is simply the result of sloppy research on the part of the newspaper reporter, who picked up Kree/Skrull rumors from the internet rumor mill and is just regurgitating it.

Marvel has stated initially that actor Tom Hiddleston will reprise his role as Loki in the movie, though it was never stated that he's the primary villain of the piece. It seems unlikely to us that the movie, ambitious as it already is, would pull something as complex as the Kree/Skrull war into the mix.

On the other hand, if they're using The Ultimates as a guide (as they seem to be in certain aspects of the movie), the first storyline from that featured an invasion by aliens called the Chitauri (not the Skrulls) but had the same shape-shifting abilities.
