We all remember "Dolly the Sheep" and the cloning controversy that surrounded her identical family members. Since that time, scientists have only been able to complete the cloning process with live donor cells, meaning they needed a living animal to take samples from. However, thanks to Japanese scientists, we might be able to get the same result from cells that have been frozen for long periods of time.

Reserachers have created clones of mice that were frozen at minus 20C for 16 years by injecting nuclei from brain tissue into empty eggs that have had their DNA removed. From those cloned embyros they extracted stem cells, which were then injected into another set of de-nucleied eggs, which then grew into four mouse clones. So while this doesn't mean you will be riding a Mammoth at next year's state fair, it is the seed that could grow into a future Jurassic Park. Best of luck to you, John Hammond.

What do you guys think about cloning? Should we be messing around with this kind of thing?

When you consider the fact that the world is currently on a path to becoming extremely overpopulated, it seems strange that we'd want to fuck around with cloning, and increase the number of living organisms by that much.

What about cloning for body parts? Like growing a new heart for someone with a damaged one etc...

Well, would we be able to simply clone a heart, or would we have to clone a full person in order to get a working organ. All likelihood rests with the second scenario. So what do we do? Do we offer the ability to clone yourself to ensure a usable organ, blood, or bone marrow match? What, then, do we do with the full people? Do we leave them in living, yet unaware comatose states until needed? Is that humane? Do we let them live lives ostracized from normal society, and then tear out their organs as needed? Is that humane? Do clones have the same rights as humans, or are they simply man-made objects that happen to live?

This could become a huge issue, if science continues to progress with cloning at such a rapid rate.

Not it doesn't. They're able (or will soon be able, I forget which) to produce animal meat in vitro without producing an entire animal. What makes you think a heart or lung is so special that it would need to be harvested from an fully grown human?

You make a good point though: Regulations are needed. Slowing down technology is not needed, but regulations are. Oh my yes.

Perhaps the organ would not function properly were it spontaneously called upon to live? I really don't know either way.

But yes, regulations would be required.

Cloned animals don't seem to work as well anyway, from my knowledge they have lower lifespans. I'm not too sure what the difference would be of a cell from Dolly the sheep and a cell froma clone of a cell from Dolly the sheep.

In any case everyone is vastly underqualified to make any real decision.

Those questions all reminded me of this movie:
