WICOMICO CHURCH, Va. (AP) — A 6-year-old Virginia boy who missed his bus tried to drive to school in his family's sedan — and crashed. His parents were charged with child endangerment. State police said the boy suffered only minor injuries and authorities drove him to school after he was evaluated at a local hospital for a bump on his head. He arrived shortly after lunch, Sgt. Tom Cunningham said.

It happened around 7:40 a.m. Monday on Route 360, about 61 miles east of Richmond.

The boy, whose name wasn't released, missed the bus, took the keys to his family's 2005 Ford Taurus and drove nearly six miles toward school while his mother was asleep, police said.

He made at least two 90-degree turns, passed several cars and ran off the rural two-lane road several times before hitting an embankment and utility pole about a mile and a half from school.

The boy told police he learned to drive playing Grand Theft Auto and Monster Truck Jam video games.

"He was very intent on getting to school," said Northumberland County Sheriff Chuck Wilkins. "When he got out of the car, he started walking to school. He did not want to miss breakfast and PE."

His parents, Jacqulyn Deana Waltman, 26, and David Eugene Dodson, 40, are each charged with child endangerment, Wilkins said. Waltman is being held without bond. Dodson was released on a $5,000 bond.

It was not clear if they had attorneys.

The boy and his 4-year-old brother were placed in protective custody.

"This really is a story of miracles," Wilkins said. "The Lord was with him, along with everybody else on the highway."

How did he both reach the pedals and see where he's going if he's only six? Kid must be a great driver to have lasted as long as he did.

I saw this on a news site and the headline was something like:

"6 Year Old Steals Car: Learned by playing GTA"

I'm not entirely understanding the child endangerment. Is it because the keys were in an easily accessible area? They let a kid play GTA? I'm not seeing it. They can make something up like parental negligence, but not endangerment if they weren't even aware of their kid stealing the car. Technically the child was endangering people, not the parents.

Parents are responsible for the child's actions I suppose.

I could see that if they were aware of what was going on, and not sleeping. I'm not saying the parents aren't responsible, but nothing in the article describes "child endangerment." The parents are definitely responsible for what happened and should be punished for making it so easy for a child to steal a car, whether it be from letting him play video games like that or leaving the keys in an easy place to find them, but I don't think it should be considered child endangerment. Child endangerment is locking a kid in a car during a hundred-degree day, not having a kid steal a car without the parents even knowing.

Child endangerment is a criminal offense that involves the subjection of minor children to inappropriate or dangerous situations.

I guess it all led to a dangerous situation.

But are they really subjecting him? I guess you can look at it from the standpoint that they could have bought or allowed him to play a game that would put it in his head that stealing a car is fine, but it's not like they said "here are the keys, drive your own ass to school." But either way, it does and should fall on the parents.

I think it's more they didn't watch him and he got the key, took the car and drove off and they didn't even notice, not that he played the game.

Those Grand Theft Auto games have fucked up a lot of lives. I remember reading a similar article, just a few months back.

Yes, but they've also created opportunities and opened the minds for those less fortunate...

I've played GTA a few times, it doesn't make me want to go kill people. If you have the "killer" inside you, i don't think you can blame a video game. I think the persons mental well being is to be blamed.

I am Godzilla, you are Japan.
Perhaps the Mother should have been awake and making sure the child got to school ok rather than letting him miss the bus? Thus making him seek alternate transport, which then became endgangerment, a 6 year old isn't going to understand what he's done is all that wrong.
