On Thursday night, January 15, President Bush gave what should be his final address to the nation (save any catastrophic event). In his farewell speech Bush basically summed up his 2 term presidency as the 9/11 attacks, his war against terrorist, and liberating Iraq and Afghanistan. He also stated that the biggest problem waiting Obama is another terrorist attack. That is how he sees his presidency. You may watch his speech below. My question is do you agree with Bush? Did he correctly sum up his Presidency? And a second question: Now that Bush is leaving office how do you think he'll be remembered? As a good president or as a terrible President? He's had very low approval ratings throughout his entire second term. Do you expect those opinions to change as people look back on the Bush Administration? |

I think that history will look back at Bush's presidency as insignificant in the grand scheme of things. I could elaborate, but it's 2 AM, so I won't. |

I don't think it can be thought of as insignificant. Two wars and and a failing economy will be remembered. |

These aren't real "wars." They're just police actions. And not even ones on the same scale as Korea or 'Nam. And while the economy is down, that's part of Capitalism, and a lot of that is because of NAFTA, Clinton's baby. But that's irrelevant. I'm not saying this stuff is insignificant in general. My point is that it will mark very little significance in American history, as everything good and bad that happened during Bush's terms have been done before on a grander scale. Excluding 9/11, nothing from this decade (barring an assassination) should go down in history as something revolutionary.

I agree, I think it's somewhat similar to how Bush Sr. is looked at right now in history classes. Sure, the Iraq conflict is talked about, but I don't think there will be as much discussion of the president's actions as there was with say, Wilson when he was there for WWI, or Nixon with whatever the hell gate it was (the whole Spygate thing screwed me up with the names ).I think his 8 years were very much action-filled, though, especially with 9/11, the Iraq stuff and the economy issues. I think for the latter, though, for historical purposes the people are going to look more at Obama and how he fixed/hurt the economy than how Bush was in office when it started. Similar with FDR and how everybody praises him for getting everyone out of the Depression (also helped by WWII), but at the same point, most don't remember the president who was in office beforehand. But overall, Bush might be a bit more respected in the future, which is how it usually works. Nobody likes him now because they're living through it and have a chance to critique every moment of his life, but down the road, I think he'll be looked on in a better light. |

Watergate... What this decade will likely be remembered most for are the social reforms, where things seemed to be a bit more isolated than they normally would have been. Or maybe not, I'm not a social scientist. |

Bit hard to tell right now. It'll either be insignificant for the reasons Omega listed, or hated for the reasons Cybrus listed. I really cannot predict. |
