Former WWE superstar Edward “Umaga” Fatu, 36, is currently in a Houston hospital and is in very bad shape. A long-time friend described his condition as “life threatening.”

Details are still sketchy at this point, but he apparently fell asleep last night while watching television, and several hours later, his wife found him not breathing with blood coming out of his nose. He was rushed to the hospital last night and his family has been told to fly into town as quickly as possible.

PWTorch.com’s James Caldwell posted a message this afternoon that Umaga was dead from prescription pain pills and WWE was already preparing a statement regarding his death, but that news was quickly taken offline. There has been talk among many wrestlers that Umaga is dead or brain dead, but at this time, his family will only confirm that he’s been hospitalized.

As of this writing, Umaga is NOT dead, but has been hospitalized and from what we can tell, is fighting for his life. We wish him the very best and hope he pulls through this.

I really enjoy Umaga I think he is very talented and his run in WWE has some great moments before he got lost in the shuffle. I really hope that he pulls through he would be very much missed by me. When WWE let him go and TNA was really pushing the Nation Of Violence I was so hoping to see Umaga show up as part of that. I hope we get more news as the day goes on hoping for a positive update but being a wrestling fan I know most the time you have to expect the worst.

WWE would like to express its deepest condolences to Mr. Fatu’s family, friends and fans on his tragic passing. Mr. Fatu was under contract with WWE at various time periods and most recently performed under the name "Umaga." Mr. Fatu's contract was terminated on June 11, 2009.

Now WWE says he's dead. A couple of sites mention him as dead too.

I'll be honest right now and say I thought he was one of the more boring characters the WWE had ever produced, and his showing on TV usually made me switch channels.

I'm sure he was a nice dude irl though.

I BET HE REGRETS REFUSING THAT REHAB NOW EH?

Rest in peace, Eddie "Umaga" Fatu.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I have a few tears in my eyes right now. I really enjoyed Umaga's work in the WWE. Not only that, but it's hard to watch someone at 36-years old pass away so young from alleged drug usage. The amount of wrestling deaths recently has been nothing short of depressing.

Imagine if he died while still working for WWE.

His last match was on the Hulkamania Tour against Anderson (Kennedy).

That sucks. He was one of the guys from 3 Minute Warning too, right? LOVED that team. Loved the theme, Bischoff as the manager, and the whole idea surrounding it (especially when they were doing the HLA stuff).

But seriously, it is sad that with all the stuff put into place somebody could still slip through the cracks and die from some type of drug abuse. I mean obviously I can't say what kind of drug it is, whether they were pain pills or cocaine (you know, the whole "bleeding from the nose" thing), but I wish there would be a way to find people help even if they refuse.

Several wrestlers have expressed their condolences via Twitter in regards to the passing of Eddie "Umaga" Fatu…

* Shannon Moore: R.I.P Ecki....Mad love and respect. We will miss you and I will cherish the times we had together.

* Christopher Daniels: RIP Eddie Fatu. I'm glad I got to know you in the short time you were here.

* D'Angelo Dinero: This is rough, very rough. My heart and prayers goes out to Umaga's wife, his boys, and family.

* Allison Danger: RIP Umaga. I thank you for your kindness when we met. My heart aches for your family and my thoughts are with them in their time of need.

* Hurricane Helms: Heartbroken. No words.

* Jeremy Borash: RIP Eddie Fatu

* TNA Online: RIP Eddie Fatu

* Ken Anderson: go out and tear the house down. We both had something to prove that night and in my opinion: Mission Accomplished! Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Fatu family. Ecki absolutely adored his wife and was extremely proud of his children. I have so many amazing, funny, and heartwarming (sometimes gut wrenching belly-laughing) memories.

* Matt Hardy: Just landed in Shreveport to go to work tonight-I'm very saddened to hear about Ecky (Umaga) & his family-please keep them in your prayers.

I am pretty well lost for words I know I will miss his work he was really good at what he done and I always was entertained. I thought back when he had that big push in WWE he was gunna get a run with the world title. Just I will miss Umaga.

RIP My thoughts are with him family and friends as I am sure this is a hard time he was still so young and still had a bright future just a sad day.

I'm not going to say I was a fan of him just because he recently passed away, but it is very sad. 36 years old is a very young age to die. I like calling him "Umenga" because that's what Regal would always call him and I found that to be hilarious.

Thoughts are with his family. Wonder how the Rock is taking it. Rest is peace.

Me too.

It's terrible that Umaga died so young. It took a while for his character to grow on me, but I eventually thought Umaga was one of the best "monster" characters WWE had ever created. Well, up to the point that they made him talk. I was hoping to see him return. :(

Ugh, I can't believe so many people liked his WWE character. He was a ball of generic WWE-big man. I usually tuned out when he was on TV. In fact, I remember a 'shitty squad' signature I used to have

Khali, Cena, Flair, Umaga and a few others who I forget.

Not to pass judgement on his personal life because I'm sure he was a great dude, but idk, I'm pretty sure I wasn't alone with the Umaga hate.

I forgot what my stance was on his character. I thought I liked him for a time because of his athletic ability as a big wrestler. But I'm not even sure if that was him or what.

Oh yeah, now remember. I thought he was great because of having Estrada as his manager.

I always liked Umanga, sure his character wasn't the best. But his in ring ability for a big guy was crazy. He could move like some of the cruiserweights in the business and still have power and strength.
Sad to see him die so young. RIP
