The Wrestler = "Wrestling Bible"?

Wheelchair Jimmy's profile: ""The Wrestler" is like a Wrestling Bible!! Because of that I rarely watch wrestling anymore :p "

Can I get a clarification on that? Is that just taken as a joke or does that mean "The Wrestler" is the biggest reason you don't watch wrestling anymore?

DISCUSS!

Oh and BTW, I guess so we can get a discussion going, did watching "The Wrestler" change the way anybody watched wrestling? If so, how?

It helped enlighten a few people I know that know nothing about wrestling and have always thought of it as, more or less, men fake fighting in spandex. Now they know some of the brutalities of it and how low it can get for many.

For me personally? Nope. It didn't change a thing.

Maybe Wheelchair Jimmy just doesn't want to support something that fuels such a self-destructive life, at least in the case of some (like The Ram)? "Wrestling Bible" referencing to how the movie shows so much about the wrestling business, at least the tragic side....

It's a fabulous new day, yes it is!
Wheelchair Jimmy?? I thought it was 2kgen saying that on his status.

As for The Wrestler, it hasn't changed much in me, but I did appreciate how difficult it must be to pull off a wrestling film like that.

It was a reference to the fact that he has a Drake avatar. Drake played Wheelchair Jimmy on Degrassi. It's basically a way of saying that I couldn't remember what his username was.

Although I do agree, it didn't really change my style. If anything, the first time I saw it probably made me want to see more hardcore or Indy style wrestling. Since it didn't deal with any "big" company it had no affect with my WWE stuff, but I think I enjoyed the movie so much I had to watch similar wrestling.

It also opened my eyes to the Necro Butcher. :P

I went to see that movie with a female friend of mine when it came out. And she wasn't a wrestling fan, but rather a movie connoisseur. And during that scene where "The Ram" fought that dude with the staple guns and the glass tubes and what not, she was fairly squeamish. A number of folks who saw that movie who weren't wrestling fans were shocked by the gruesomeness of it all. Meanwhile, having seen that type of stuff going on in my years as a wrestling fan, I was unfazed by all of this. So if anything, watching wrestling changes how I saw The Wrestler, and not vice versa. (Granted,I stopped watching before the movie came out, so that likely plays a role in that respect as well).

I think the movie just shows how tuff the wrestling business can be. Especially if you get to a certain age.

It was a good movie which also points out that you can be the biggest thing at one time by alot of people but can also be forgotten by those same people.

Though true fans of that certain wrestler will always be one.

If any of the wrestlers were to fall on hard times like in the movie, would you be a fan of theirs regardless whether they were on tv or not? Something to think about.

A little of both. I wouldn't mind seeing it, but I'm not sure how I'd like it. I'll probably end up getting it when it gets really cheap or something, but I'm not in a real hurry. I just kind of think it's going to be a downer of a movie.

I haven't seen it, either. And I don't want to. It doesn't mean anything. Every football fan doesn't have to run out and watch Varsity Blues, do they? I sure hope not. I guess The Wrestler can't help but be better than that, though.

Marisa Tomei is yummy....hold on I have to go to the bathroom thinking about that.

It gave some wrestlers and both ROH and CZW more exposure than you would see unless you buy their stuff.

I never really cared for CZW. Though they did have Alex Shelly come from them and a couple other known names that I can't think off the top of my head now.

One thing I forgot to mention is that even though this is one of the best wrestling movies to come out, referring it as a wrestling bible might be a stretch unless I'm misreading the basis for this thread.

If anything, go pick up The Unreal Story Of Pro Wrestling. IMO if anything can be close to being called a wrestling bible, this is it. It talks about the history and how wrestling came about. How and who the very first world champion is and even for the women. It's based around when the MNW were going on but it's a healthy guide for anyone that wants to know what wrestling is.

Sounds funny as hell though.

Well, there's so many of those "this is real wrestling" documentaries out there, it's hard to remember what's from what.

Oh definitely. I happened to catch this on A&E a couple years ago and it's pretty legit. I've done some research after I watched it and found that all besides some of the opinions of the wrestlers on there is true.

But everyone has them. It's really nothing big, the type of opinions I'm talking about is for instance on one scene. Lou Thesz is talking about rating Hogan for both wrestling ability which I think he said was a 2 but charisma was 8 or 9.

Stuff like that.

BTW, The Unreal Story of Professional Wrestling isn't the same thing as that ABC special revealing the "secrets" of pro wrestling. Unreal Story is just a mid/late 90s documentary on the history of professional wrestling. It's dated as hell (features WWF's The Patriot in interviews :-/ ) but it still holds up well enough. If they made an updated version, that would be awesome. Watching it as it is is almost depressing at times due to nostalgia. I get to look back and see how wrestling was 10-13 years ago and get all sorts of memories of how differently I viewed and felt about pro wrestling back then.

The special where Harley's identity was hidden was some completely separate special on ABC that was supposed to reveal the secret tricks that wrestlers supposedly use, like old ladies as plants. It's hilarious and was an instant joke throughout the wrestling world. Mick Foley even mentions it in one of his books (not sure if it's Sweatsocks or Is Good).
