The Man. Any Questions?
|
After the Nexus thing on Raw, and with what TNA's doing, I was reminded of past "invasion" angles. We all know about the WCW/ECW thing in the WWF, and the NWO, all of that. But in my opinion, the best "invasion" was in ECW, when Jerry Lawler showed up and sided with RVD and Sabu, and just wreaked havoc. I feel it was done right. No jumping on one guy, while 50 wrestlers just sit in the back jerking off, like what happened with the Nexus thing. Almost the entire roster got involved, and took a beating. It wasn't slow in happening, like the NWO taking two months to gather members. It was just BAM! here they are. And they saved the "top guy" for later, so nobody looked outmanned for a future confrontation. I found a vid of it, so check it out: Spoiler: click to toggle This is what I think of when somebody talks about "invasion angle", right here. |

I loved the Invasion angle in WWF, I was so hyped and excited for that PPV as well, maybe it was because I was younger but still I can't remember being more excited for a PPV. |

On a different note, I think that invasions are one of those universal wrestling storylines that always work, alongside boss vs wrestler, heel commentator vs face commentator, and apparently, the superman gimmick. |

This is odd. I was thinking of something like this last night. Invasion angles are good for the business aslong at it doesn't get played out. It also is a way to bring in factions which usually are a way to up others game, making it seem interesting. The one thing that WCW did right in order to compete with WWF was the NWO angle, many people were confused because it seemed like it was an invasion from them but after the angle got overused, they didn't have anything to really follow it. I can say that during the first run of this though, mixed with the wrestlers like the cruiserweights and even the tag teams, they were a force till Russo and that other guy I can't think of his name along with the backstage politics with the ones who really didn't know what wrestling was about pretty much dismantled WCW. Leaving it for a lower price to purchase than it was worth when business was good. I can on and on about their demise but we've heard it all before. Plus you can watch it on the Rise and Fall of WCW. WWE tried reviving it which lasted less than 6 months. I've said it before but for those that don't follow the Indy scene then you won't know what I'm talking about but I tell you if it wasn't for the CZW/ROH feud, I probably would've stopped watching for a longer period of time. The whole angle started from an invasion by none other than this guy: Also I've noticed that every so many years something like this occurs. One of the problems with the WCW/ECW invasion was that even though we got see some wrestlers from other companies on in WWF, I think it was a way of sorting out which wrestlers are good enough to stay within with the WWF which ultimately led to most being let go or just having to start all over again. Booker T is a prime example of this. They tried bringing the ECW brand back which was doing fine but seeing that Heyman didn't have full control, it led to alot of conflict between him and Vince. During this time though, Heyman cut a fantastic promo which I think had alot reality drawn into it even though it was part of the "Invasion" angle. Since we're on the subject of invasions, There is also another that not many know about that I think only the hardcore wrestling fans may know about and that's which is in relation to Lawler invading the ECW arena. It led to an inter-promotional war between ECW and USWA. During these days you had to be a fan to watch this cause it was a great thing. Even Vinny had the ECW guys come in on Raw to promote the upcoming ppv which was ECW's first. Going so far for a time in endorsing them. They even had them come on some of the ppvs, starting shit with the WWF wrestlers. Anybody remember IYH:Mind Games? There was one that didn't last that long after this one and that was what is known as the NWA invasion. During this time, the NWO was very hot and Vince thought to bring in the Rock-N-Roll Express and doing title matches with actual NWA wrestlers. Dan Severn who was the NWA champ at the time was seen on Raw a couple times. This was just one of those things that helped me personally tune in, flipping the channels back and forth cause it was an exciting time for fans. It left a bitter taste in alot of the NWA fans since they I believe saw it as a way to kick bring them in only to kick them further down the industry then they were already. Making them seem that even though they were once a strong promotion, WWF is better. I think there was even a story someone wrote about this around the net. Fast forward to the present. The Nexus is a one of the better things WWE has done since taking the F off. Giving a chance for newer talent to bring something different for a change which they sorely needed. You can only do the same feuds with the same people for so long till it gets tiring. Perhaps one of the biggest reasons I stopped watching them for so long. As far as TNAs' version of ECW, it's really hard to say what to make of it. I'm getting the feeling that they are going to try and make it seem that they can do a better job at using the one time wrestlers. If the rumors are true about making another show using them, they are going to need atleast another 5 or 6 more names. One specifically is Sabu. Now granted ECW should have been left for dead when they were first bought out but I'm gonna try and stay open minded for this. Lets' not forget that many fans were crying out for ECW to be brought back. One of the biggest arguments why people complained about WWE's version was Vince wanted it in his vision. Releasing everyone from the original product. Dreamer was the last and I believe only one to hold that belt since WWE purchased it. The wrestlers aren't getting any younger and this could be a way of giving them what could be considered an actual last stand. The main piece to this story is missing in Heyman. If they can secure him, then this could be quite interesting. From what I've read from next week's TNA show, I saw something that Rhino did right before WWE brought the ECW name back in calling out WWE. This is really nothing new since TNA always seems to want to start something but it seems that no one really cares, or pay attention to the rants former employees have. I understand TNA wants to compete but they have alot of negatives that are working against them. I also recently read that TNA is having financial trouble. So we'll see if they are digging themselves a deeper hole. |
