As of this very moment, as I wait with the first episode I will ever have seen of ROH on HDNet on pause on the intro video that my exposure to ROH has been limited. I saw their first PPV online a few days after it hit the airwaves, I've seen two dozen or so random matches, and I used to watch the video wire things occasionally. Other than that, I'm a ROH newbie. I only know the names of a handful of people and can only recognise less than that. So the following thoughts are from the perspective of someone that is looking on the company with fresh eyes... I was going to start from the beginning, but for the sake of my typing and so I don't spend the next few weeks catching up, I'm just going to start at the episode from last week. I would have started with tonight's episode but...I can't. So...here. We. Go. Is that Chris Hero? He looks like Thor. I don't know who the bald guy is. The belts look a lot better than they did in the original still shots. I don't know what it is, but the very little I've seen of the Briscoes just rubs me the wrong way. They just look like massive douchebags. I haven't seen Sara Del Rey in a long time now. She looks nice. Pretty boring opening video/song. Cool set, although I prefer the other more ECW like one I've seen them use. Oh, that's Claudio Cast...Cast... however you spell his last name? I've heard about him. It's nice to see a manager again. He doesn't seem to suck, even though he's boring to look at. Josh Emanuel and Ice Jackson - these guys? Jobbers? No way! The match is basically a skinhead and a viking beating on some black men. Mel Gibson is getting tingly just thinking about it. Maybe it's because it's against jobbers, but this is a pretty boring match. Kind of sloppy, too. Oh crap...another jobber team? I'm already itching for the next segment. At least Rob Terry's boring squashes are quick. Oh fuck, ANOTHER team? I'm betting they're the Briscoes. HA! I FUCKING KNEW IT! That's one of the oldest acts in wrestling. And it's finally over. Something I have to say about the studio. This does not have the intimate feel that I think of when I think of ROH. This has a kind of...sterile feel to it. The audience doesn't feel like they're as big a part of the show as I've seen/heard them before. If the camera angles weren't so loose it would probably feel like a legit sport, though, I will say that. American Wolves vs Next we have...Dark City Fight Club. An the American Wolves. I've heard of them but I don't know who they are. And it's generic manager guy with good mic skills again. Oh, Davey Richards. Yeah, I don't know him that well but I remember him now...vaguely. No idea who the other guy is, though. They've only locked up and it's already much better than the first match. This match is on the dull side, too, though. It really, really feels like an independent match with a very bored audience. And now there's chaos and Necro and the fans have woken up. I'm always up for some Necro Butcher myself. Gotta say, TNA did the whole "back room empties to the ring, chaos ensues" thing better on Impact a few weeks ago. I might have been more into all of that if I knew what the hell was going on storyline wise.Mike looks like an old school wrestling announcer. Someone I would expect to see hosting the UWF or something. Well, that or someone that would be doing commentary for a NASCAR event. Dave looks like he lives in his mom's basement. Corny! DVD promo...I guess they just ditched the old arena for good then? Wasn't it the ECW arena? Some guy is talking, sounds like a scared kid reading his book report. Oh, that's Roderick Strong? Some guy talking about Ron Killings. He looks like a porn star vampire. The interviewer looks kind of like Eric Young. Whoa, wait a minute! Is Daniels using his TNA theme? That's cool. Next guy has a very cool theme...oh, it's Roderick Strong and vampire dong again. Heh. That rhymed. Okay match, but the audience is too quiet. They react but it just feels too distant. Might as well be in an empty studio at times. Oh, now they've picked up once Strong starts with the taunts. And Shockwave just crashed. Reload time. It's over with a book shot. Really? A book knocked him silly? And that's the show. Well...that was underwhelming. Maybe it's because I'm really tired and have been typing all freaking day, but I didn't enjoy that as much as I thought I would. During every match I found myself just hoping it was over sooner rather than later. I don't want to say it was a bad show, but it doesn't make me that enthusiastic to catch the next episode. And this wound up coming off a lot more negative than I expected it to, also.

Oh goody. Another person I can talk to about this. Yeah the one thing I don't like about ROH on HDnet is they seem to fill the show up with atleast a jobber or two. I mean if they are suppose to showcase the talent they've got then it should be against other competitors like Aries, Steen, Cobana, etc. Daniels is by far I think the best one to cut promos out of anybody. I know it's a pretty bold statement but find me someone who's better. The problem with ROH now and days is that the matches or rather the bookings aren't as strong as they once were, said a couple years ago. Don't get me wrong, I'm still a big ROH fan but something is missing, perhaps if Danielson shows up in the next month, it'll be a good addition. I also wouldn't mind seeing Cide back aswell but we'll see. Speaking of which I'm debating on to make a thread on what has become of ROH in the recent years. It probably come off as a column though since it'll be a pretty long post. It could also be that they don't have the wrestlers they once did, even though they are showing newer ones. I've become a Kenny King fan over time, if you happen to catch his matches with Rhett Titus, they are pretty damn good. I don't know and it might be me but King reminds me a Shelton alot, but just better at cutting promos. Shelton is still a bit more atletic the comparison is there. Keep your eye on the Wolves, they are a great team. Davey Richards is as intense as anybody and reminds me so much of Benoit. His partner Eddie Edwards started out looking like a shitty imitation of BG James but since he's teamed up with Richards and got rid of that crappy hair, he's been one who you know paid or is paying his dues along the way. They made him their first tv champion so that's gotta count for something. Speaking of titles, the KOW who are the current tag champs are a great team aswell. Them along with the Briscoes have had some excellent matches. Go pick up anything with these two wrestling and it'll be very stiff, almost like stuff you'd see in NJPW, AJPW or even Dragon Gate. I to felt like the Briscoes were giant terds at first but over the years, they've grown on me. It helps that they have had some great tag bouts. Just watch the ladder war on the MAN UP dvd against Steenerico. I don't base my opinions on these shows, rather the ones I do are usually on dvd which come out way better. Although some aren't as good, I still prefer watching them then these weekly shows. It just becomes rather expensive after awhile. They did just come out with a Best of HDNet that has all matches worth watching if you are interested. I'm thrilled that Corino is with them though. He's was booked here and there for a long time. It's good that he's part of the official roster. |

On the talent not being the same anymore, that would make sense since the majority of ROH clips and the like I've seen were from 2008 or before. Wasn't their first PPV in 2007? I loved that. I thought Danielson was awesome. I thought McGuiness was awesome. I thought Morishima was awesome. I thought Delirious was awesome. There wasn't anyone or anything that really stood out to me on the TV show, though. It does seem to suffer from most of their best going away over the years. It seems they're dangerously close to where ECW was at before the died, what with the losing stars faster than they can make 'em. I think what ROH needs the most is an overall in the actual writing. I like their realistic approach. I like that almost everything takes place either in the ring or in a real promo - not just a camera stumbling in on something, and definitely not invisible cameraman stuff. I like how most of these enemies feel like they legit don't like eachother. But the storylines need to pop more somehow. They need something besides just the wrestling to catch the attention of people like me that are more or less just checking it out. The Age of the Fall stuff I remember hearing about or one of Punk's anti-drug promos are good example sof an attention grabber, imo. But a jobber gauntlet and a brawl I have very little idea the reason for doesn't quite fall in the same league. As for the actual wrestling, which is obviously what ROH is all about and that's just fine, it was kind of sloppy at times (that's to be expected I think) but my biggest complaint was that the matches lacked the charisma that you usually get in bigger places, or in some older places. It's hard to describe. It might just be the in-studio audience. I miss the old set-up. That audience made everything feel AMAZING. The current set-up...not so much. I'll watch it again when the next episode is up, but it was a rough first start for me. |

It's a fabulous new day, yes it is!

As for the rough start, I understand what Kraul means. Before they started with the tv shows, most of their events had all the cool matches which made them famous, as well as having the likes of Danielson and McGuinness on their rosters. When I watched the first episode, the matches were short, but the main event was good/decent enough to watch, but the big upgrade for ROH by siding with HDNet was that it looked visually better. I haven't watched ROH in a long time due to lazyness and Tyler Black as ROH Champion isn't appealing to me. Should I give this episode a watch? -O-, tell me if I should know something before watching this episode. Maybe if you and Kraul comment on ROH, I'll probably give it a shot again.

Hmm......well if you haven't watched ROH in a while, I probably wouldn't watch this episode. I mean it was okay nothing to really tune in for. |

The main storylines you need to know are: 1. Christopher Daniels is trying to prove he is the best wrestler in the world by beating all the top RoH guys. He has challenged Tyler Black and everyone else that claims they are the best. 2. The Kings of Wrestling assaulted the Briscoes father after the Briscoes hit Sara Del Ray with the Jay Driller. They are in a really good feud. 3. Austin Aries tried to end Delirious's career by crushing his throat. Delirious has been trying to get revenge ever sense. 4. Steve Corino and Kevin Steen have been feuding with Steen's former partner El Ginerico. 5. Roderick Strong is the #1 contender for the World title and he says he can not trust anyone in RoH, wrestler or management, because they all lie and betray him. That is why he got life coach Truth Martini as his new manager. 6. The Embassy is stupid. That's the bullet points. Edited by Purple Marauder, Aug 4 2010, 01:04 PM.
