The Man. Any Questions?
|
Late 90s was the best time for wrestling in the WWF. Oh, excuse the hell out of me, WWE. Let me just list some greatness: 1. Stone Cold. 'nuff said. 2. Poontang pie. First time EVER said on television, period. Those who saw it couldn't believe they let that by. 3. "Weighing in at WELL OVER 400 pounds!" Hardcore Holly and Crash. "I'm a superheavyweight". LOL. 4. Sexual Chocolate. 5. "For the benefit of those with flash photography", the 5-second pose by Edge and Christian. Fat Elvis and Thin Elvis. You know you love it. (They need to do that one more time at a PPV or something) 6. Original D-Generation-X and second-coming (with New Age Outlaws) were both incredible. You never forget "let my people go!" in Virginia. 7. Roll a fatty for this pimp daddy. The Godfather and the HOOOOOOOOO Train. 8. "Kane is alive, Undertaker! He's breathing!" Awesomeness. One of the all-time great storylines. 9. "Bret screwed Bret". 'nuff said. 10. "You do NOT boo a gold medallist!" - Kurt Angle explodes on the scene, Survivor Series 1999. ...and a host of others. I'm sure many of you can pick out a lot more cool angles/storylines from the period. See why we miss it? So much going on, all at one time. |

It was also a time when WWE was pushing boundaries instead of scaling way back. For me personally, it was also an extremely entertaining time for me because it's when I went from being a casual fan to a hardcore fan. There was so much new information to take in and I hadn't become completely aware to the sheer amount of politics and such that takes place. I also hadn't quite yet found the shows be too predictable like I do now. It was easier to be entertained and it was one hell of an entertaining era. |

Yes it was a time to have more freedom cause of the wars. You never knew who was going to whind in WWF, or who will we see in WCW or even ECW. It was pretty hectic and a time like no other. It was a time where wrestling itself peaked and politics weren't a big issue. To make this happen again which I know people are craving for, WWE would need some actual competition. One of the reasons why they were so successful was because they let the wrestlers be themselves that was part of their character. Plus jobs were literally on the line. |

Outside of WCW, maybe, and after Michaels temp-retired. Politics are part of the reason WCW is dead now, and why they rapidly fell apart during an era when wrestling was hotter than it had been possibly ever. |

Yeah alot of the wrestlers in WCW had guranteed contracts which enabled them to control the outcome of their character which ultimately led to the infamous Bash At The Beach incident. After all that, Hogan still chose to work with Russo which is odd. Must have forgave him. |

I think it's more likely that Hogan was convinced to do anything he's done in his career since the mid-80s purely because of this: Spoiler: click to toggle

The big thing that jumps out at me (and why I chose a "list" format), is that, from Austin on down to the Acolyte Protection Agency to The Rock to the lowliest Crash Holly, everyone was being used in some kind of meaningful way during that period. You didn't head into SummerSlam with four matches, and a bunch of guesswork. You had top feuds, midcard feuds, even curtain-jerkers were involved in some kind of angles with each other. The problem was there wasn't enough PPV to feature all the logical matches, not the other way around. Contrast that with now, where you've got a half-dozen guys on Raw every week, and everyone else is pretty much doing nothing. |

That's pretty much been the way it's been since they bought WCW. I think having all of that talent ruined them in that it has become the norm to not really know what to do with their roster. It used to be there were too many people and if someone didn't work out, you could just switch them out anyway. Now with how often they drop guys after one half-ass go by creative doesn't work and with how many guys are just *there*, it seems to be the same mindset. And the whole "book the PPV at the last minute" seems to just be the way PPVs are booked nowadays, and it seems to be biting them in the ass. TNA's PPVs aren't selling at all, and I believe WWE's are down (at least their minor PPVs). But with everybody in such a rush to get through angles and events most of the time, I don't think that's going to change. |

I'm sick to death of people talking about the "attitude era". first, the term has become annoying due to overuse. second...well that's pretty much it. but god it pisses me off.
really? |

It's true. 10 years from now those who watched the Attitude Era will still be talking about The Godfather and Billy Gunn in almost the same light as The Rock. In 20 years I'm sure most of us will forget who Dolph Ziggler is... |

What I don't understand is why WWE can't do it now. Sure, you're not going to get good characters on everyone, but at least use them! I saw Superstars the other day, and Chavo Guerrero had match with Chris Masters. Now, who knew these guys were even employed? You'd never know it from watching Raw, because the just use the same 6 guys constantly. GET PEOPLE INVOLVED! It's not hard to do. Edited by SRP76, Aug 14 2010, 11:32 PM.

Well granted, they have pushed both in the past. Masters actually played a good heel but kept getting suspended because of the steroids, and Eddie died so Chavo couldn't continue being Kerwin White. |

Why not? I'd say that was probably personal choice and not a case of he "couldn't" do it. The Kerwin White gimmick wasn't all that good anyway. I really liked Chris Masters when he debuted though especially the "Master Lock Challenge"

Right. But both of those were upper mid-carders at the height of their fame. A better comparison would be between The Blue Meanie or Meat or one of those people who you've conviniently forgotten in your claim. |

Now that's the Neb I used to know! And people here said you were past your prime, that Nebuchanezzar was a hasbeen... Like I said, they don't have to be good. Meat and the Meanie sucked, but at least they were involved. You go to WWE.com and look at the Raw roster, and half of them should be on a milk carton. Use them! People are just going to waste. |
