Why would I dissown one of the greatest influences to any musician ever. After all, Nirvana gave us a legend in Kurt Cobain and possibly one of the best rock stars of all time, Dave Grohl. I hate that Kurt is dead! |

The second part was mainly for Omega (but to everyone for their enjoyment) but the first one was referring to the fact that you made the remark right after a post that had him say "fuck Nirvana." So I just needed some clarification.

I would if you did Cobain for obvious reasons (on account of it being extremely awkward, etc.) but Grohl and the bassist Krist I have no problems with you fucking. |

I'm familiar with Nirvana, I've heard almost all of their discography, including their Unplugged MTV performance. Honestly, I only found one of the songs they've ever done to be even close to passable, and that's "The Man Who Sold the World" and that's a Bowie tune. Their lyrics lack any sort of meaning or poetry; it's didactic nonsense. Their musical stylings are barely at an amateur level, they're sloppy as everything, and they seem to only know three chords. Kurt Cobain can't sing. It's that simple. If anything, they're unique in that they started a wave of making shitty music popular. So kudos to them for that, I suppose. If he's considered an influence to musicians, then he'd better be an influence in the form of an example as to what NOT to do ever. Because calling Kurt Cobain a musician is like calling a 4-year-old an artist for drawing in a coloring book. And if that inspires you as a musician, I question the quality of what you do. Most rock songs only have about 3 chords.

Correction. Most POP ROCK and METAL and PUNK songs have only three chords. But Rock songs along the likes of The Beatles (from Sgt. Peppers and afterwards), and The Rolling Stones, and Queen, and Cheap Trick and Billy Joel, and even mediocre bands like Lynard Skynard have songs with more than three chords. Usually at least five. And sometimes, and this will blow your minds kids, they'll even CHANGE THE KEY OF THE SONG! I know, it's a concept that's unheard of in Nirvana's "music," but a lot of that is because they never establish a key. Oh man, a change from A Minor to C to G? is that in C? or G? No one will ever know, because they fade out in lieu of writing a cadence. Edited by Jesus Omega, Sep 20 2010, 08:47 PM.

Yeah, but Nirvana is grunge, not traditional rock. When you make an argument against Nirvana, you're really talking about most grunge bands from that era. And I think that is what makes Nirvana great. They don't try to be perfect. Kurt's singing by itself isn't notable, but it works extremely well with the guitar, and the guitar and singing go well with the bass and drums. And the lyrics themselves, again, don't have any sort of connection, but THAT WAS THE POINT. I'm not going off on a anti-commercial rant, but Nirvana was all about being different and not being a traditional rock band. So by you saying you hate them because they only play three cords and don't have a great singer, you're basically praising them because that was EXACTLY what they set out to do. Whether you like that style or not it's your prerogative, but making arguments about why they suck is moot because it's the exact thing that made them a revolutionary band in the early 90's. |
