WrestleZone has exclusively learned that WWE is under the impression that when Rey Mysterio's contract expires with the company in a little less than a year, the popular luchador will not be renewing.

"Rey feels his time in WWE is up," a key WWE insider told us this evening,"his performance in the Elimination Chamber is a perfect example of Rey being used in the right fashion by WWE management. He really worked hard to get Edge over the right way, even though it's obvious there are no big plans for Rey at Wrestlemania."

WrestleZone was also told about a creative meeting in which a suggestion was made that since Alberto Del Rio is the #1 contender to the World's Heavyweight Championship, consideration should be given to Rey Mysterio winning the title, and making the championship match at Wrestlemania a match between two Mexican nationals.

"The thought was to appeal to the large Latino community in Atlanta," we were told, "and to attempt to promote the match the same way UFC promoted Cain Velasquez's fight against Brock Lesnar."

WrestleZone was told the pitch was never even made to WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, because both Raw lead writer Brian Gewirtz and Smackdown lead writer Michael Hayes have been told Mysterio "will most likely not be re-signing after his current deal is up."

We have been told WWE would like to do some sort of merchandise agreement with Mysterio, but the negotiations haven't gotten to that stage yet.

Rey could retire. He's injury prone, juiced up, and has pretty much done all he can do in pro wrestling. He should be financially set, assuming he saved his money. If Rey were to decide to walk away from wrestling at this point, I think he'd have a very proud career to look back upon.

If he does decide to go to TNA, there is a chance that TNA would build the X Division around him, a chance that TNA would put the World Title on him, and even a better chance that TNA wouldn't know what to do with him. I don't see why he would go to TNA, though, since the money wouldn't be better, the exposure wouldn't be better. The only perk I ever hear about TNA is the lighter schedule.

I dunno. I'll wait for more info to come out before I form an opinion.

TNA is a great option for people like Rey that already have enough money to retire on and still want to wrestle on USA TV. They get the light schedule, TV time and he is a big enough star to be at the top of TNA's card.

But it makes TNA look like the retirement home of pro-wrestling. Like WCW was before the n.W.o. storyline.

And that's a real problem.

Let Rey just go home and spend the rest of his days watching football. The guy's been on tv for over 15 years now in the United States, that's plenty.

Funny how Sting to the WWE was going to be awesome, but Rey to TNA is like a retirement home.

If this is really the end for Rey, I have to say that I enjoyed most of his career. Yeah, I had a strong dislike for the 619 finisher, and I lost a lot of interest in him after he started winning all the time against guys like Big Show, but he had a great career as a cruiserweight, and that's more what I'll remember him for.

It says he might not resign with the WWE not that he is retiring or leaving the business.

If he really plans on going out, it's cool to see that he's going out without burning bridges. I actually kind of like Cody Rhodes so it'll be cool to see if Rey can put him over in this feud.

Also Cy, the hell is with your sig?

Hm. Rey's younger than I thought (36). Maybe this isn't a retirement, just a break. Or he could go over to tna too.

It...never...said...retirement. Jesus, leaving the WWE isn't the end of everything in the wrestling business no matter how much fanboys want it to be.

Fanhouse.com Interview with Rey

Have you given any thought on to how much longer you would like to wrestle for?

I'm 36 years old right now and I feel good. Besides my knee, after the first surgery, it's always slowed me down a bit but I've been able to adapt and modify my work to the extent of being able to still entertain the fans. If I can still entertain them and do what I do best, then I'm good for still a good amount of years. There's still nothing in the back of my mind. I just want to keep on pushing forward and feeling that excitement, that adrenaline rush every time I step into the ring.

Whenever that day does come and you decide that it's time to wind down, do you see yourself ever going back and wrestling in Mexico?

I don't know. I think that whenever I do call it quits, it's quits and it's family time for me. My kids are growing and I've missed out a lot on being with them. I definitely have told myself throughout the years that, even to my wife, that whenever I do plan to retire, whenever that day comes, it's going to be complete family time.

Working for WWE at the level Rey has is the dream of almost every single wrestler...well, I won't say in the entire world since Japan has their own thing and Mexico does, but you know what I mean. Rey has won the Royal Rumble, been World Champion, main evented a WrestleMania, and has become incredibly marketable during his time in WWE. After that kind of exposure and that level of success, working for any smaller company would seem insignificant. Even if it's not a retirement -- since a lot of wrestlers do go to TNA, ROH, or elsewhere after leaving WWE -- it is still a huge step down.

You like adding curse words to a lot of Spanish phrases. Every translation I find says "I love you a lot" or words to that effect. No "fucking" in there.
