We’re still waiting on more details to come in but Rey Mysterio recently requested his release from WWE and told officials that he would retire if they did not grant his wish. We don’t know when Rey made the request but do know it was before WWE’s big Sin Cara press conference two weeks ago in Mexico. Stay tuned for more.

If anyone deserves a long break it is Rey Mysterio. The man is great and I would miss him, but he is falling apart. After Mania, where he'll presumably put Cody Rhodes over and that would be an ideal time to go into semi-retirement. I imagine the door would be open for a return down the road, I just hope it is a long time down the road.

According to what Shows posted, he wants his release and only threatens retirement if they won't give it to him. That makes it sound like he is just unhappy with the WWE. Doesn't sound like he wants a break from wrestling, just the WWE.

Well, they have another masked guy anyway and the kids won't even know the difference.

Mysterio has tried taking breaks plenty of times before though. It was the case back in May/June that he was supposed to be taking a long break, but because Undertaker got injured he had to step back in and ended up winning the World Title. If anything, the release request would be to stop this from happening again.

I mentioned in yesterday's Premium Mailbag we were working on a major story, I can now confirm that Rey Mysterio asked WWE officials for his release and threatened to retire if the company did not release him. This is why Sin Cara was quickly signed and is being promoted for a call-up straight to the main roster.

I am expecting to get a lot more information in the next 24 hours but it appears Mysterio has worked something out to work Wrestlemania XXVII as his match against "Dashing" Cody Rhodes was confirmed on last night's Smackdown. This is not the first time Mysterio has requested his release as he did this a couple years ago over the way Vince McMahon wrote Vickie Guerrero off television.

For those that missed it over the weekend, I reported here exclusively there was a recent incident where Rey Mysterio requested his release from WWE and gave the ultimatum if it were not granted he would retire. As I noted in my original report, this is not the first time Mysterio has been very vocal about being unhappy with his position in the company.

This most recent incident took place shortly after January's Royal Rumble pay-per-view. I'm told Mysterio went to John Laurinaitis and asked for his release and was told they would talk about it later. Mysterio felt like Laurinaitis was blowing him off so he went directly to Vince McMahon.

According to sources close to the situation, McMahon refused to release him so Mysterio threatened to retire. Mysterio has an offer in place to make a series of children's films in Mexico starring as himself. His thinking was he would just make movies until his WWE contract expired and he could also wrestle in Mexico. However, WWE officials felt his WWE contract would not allow him to appear in the Mexican films without their consent and if he wants to sit out the rest of his contract, he would be unable to make non-wrestling appearances as Rey Mysterio.

While all this was going on, WWE made an aggressive effort to sign Sin Cara to fill the void when/if Mysterio leaves the company thus are rushing him directly to Smackdown. This is also why WWE promoted the signing of Cara on their official website and even plugged it on Raw. As I noted in my original report, something has been worked out for Mysterio to work Wrestlemania XXVII as his match against "Dashing" Cody Rhodes has been confirmed so things may have blown over as they did in the past. However, WWE is in a better position with Smackdown's Latino audience with the addition of Cara should Mysterio leave the company.

Damn, now that's some shit.

The most recent situation with Rey Mysterio looking to get out of WWE dates back to early February when he asked WWE’s John Laurinaitis for his release. Rey was told it could be discussed later but he went around Laurinaitis and straight to Vince McMahon. Vince denied the request and Rey threatened to retire. Rey has worked something out with WWE for WrestleMania 27 and the recent promotion tour in Mexico. One source feels that things with WWE and Rey will smooth over like they have in the past.

It’s said that things between Rey and Vince haven’t been right for a long time.

Rey has been offered a role on several movies for kids in Mexico which would be good money for him. It’s believed Rey won’t be able to film those movies as his character without WWE’s permission.

Sin Cara factors into all of this as when things really started becoming worrisome with Mysterio, officials started pursuing Cara more aggressively. At last word, Cara was set to debut on the SmackDown brand soon.

Rey Mysterio has taken to his official Twitter account to deny reports he requested his release from WWE. Below is Mysterio's Tweet:

Confirming!Did not ask 4 release! those that like me, u will have Rey 4 a good time&those that don't, well life isn't always sweet,619 out!

We broke exclusively here on Saturday that Mysterio requested his release and said if it were not granted he would retire. On Monday we provided more details about the situation.

As always, I stand by my sources and our story 100%. I'm not calling Mysterio a "liar" and I wanted to run his response, however, I am not backing off what I was told. Check out our original reports for full details on the story.

I already posted that.

WrestleZone has learned exclusively that Rey Mysterio's contract with WWE does not expire until April, 2012, with a two year option clause attached to the agreement. According to a key WWE insider, Mysterio is "50/50" as a long term player continuing on in WWE.

"(WWE Chairman) Vince (McMahon) thinks Rey is staying, but he doesn't know that for sure," our key WWE insider informed us this morning, "Vince is hopeful of Rey continuing to represent WWE to the Latino community, but Rey is claiming severe burnout and people close to him are sure he's going to either retire or try to do something else after his contract expires."

Now they are saying he has another year on his contract. They first reported that it was less than a year from expiring.
