The Man. Any Questions?
I just started a new game of one of my all-time favorites, Chrono Trigger! The Playstation version on a PSX emulator, of course. Originally an SNES game, the only difference is the PS1 version has anime cutscenes throughout the game. It still plays the same way, though.

An awesome sample of the intro, with remixed music:

If that doesn't get you pumped, nothing will!

Now, for those of you living under a rock for the last 20 years, I'll give a brief description of this incredible game:

It's an oldschool RPG. However, there are no "random battles"; all enemies are seen on the map, and you transition right into battle without a new screen. Innovative, for its time. You take control of a young man from the year 1000 A.D. named Crono (see my avatar), and set out to stop Lavos from destroying the world in 1999. You and your party members (some of whom are optional recruits) don't just romp across a landscape; you actually play 5 different versions of the world map, in 5 different "eras", or time periods: present, middle ages, dark ages, prehistory, and future. Things you do in the past affect the future time periods. Another great storytelling innovation. And, depending on your actions, you can get one of about a dozen different "endings" to the game.

If you've played it, I'm sure you loved it. If not, get it, and go to work! I HIGHLY recommend any gamer to give this one a go; you won't be disappointed.

Now, let's see how long it takes me to (re)complete this time-hopping adventure...

I've been split on whether I should buy the game on the Wii or just play a PSX rom.

Anime cut scenes you say

Yup. As seen in that intro, all art and character models were done by Akira Toriyama. As you know, I'm a huge Dragonball fan, and all the scenes are of the same style.

Definitely, another of my all-time favorites. In fact, I just finished a playthrough before starting my current run of this game.

That's a game that's worth playing through just for the music. The score is ten shades of awesome.

Well, I beat it last night, with all sidequests done, getting the "Beyond Time" ending. So, it took me a week.

Now, I'm about 15% through a "New Game Plus" of Chrono Cross (will likely play a new game plus of CT after that).

What was the play time in hours?

Playtime on my last save, which was right before the final battle was 23:06. So, whipping Lavos' monkey ass and viewing the ending probably brought it up close to 24 hours, on the dot.

You can obviously get more playtime out of this game, if you level-grind. I only got to level 50-something with everybody, only "grinding" at the very start for a couple hours (for money, not even level).

I saw this game on the Wii Virtual Console listing. I watched the little preview video they have for the game, but it didn't look like something I'd enjoy playing. I ended up getting Super Mario World instead. But know when I saw the game my first thought was "hey, that's the game SRP made a thread about!".

I feel stupid. I have no idea what "turned based combat" is. All I know is that the video shown didn't look interesting.

Basically you and the enemy just stand there, taking turns attacking each other.

Damn, you never played any Final Fantasy or Phantasy Star or Dragon Warrior, etc.?

Well, RPGs aren't for everyone, I suppose.

I was just thinking of using that as an argument to bring Cybrus to the dark side.

The original Zelda is kind of a precursor to RPGs. Or rather, RPGs kind of extended what Zelda started (especially Zelda II).

I find that most people who liked the first Zelda games like RPGs, too.

The Zelda games are different than the RPG games, it's more action-adventure driven.

Which, again, isn't me. I've never played any of the 2D Zelda games as they don't really look that interesting to me. I like the 3D Zelda games because they are more action adventure and puzzle oriented.

It's not like Ocarina of Time and the other Zelda games suck.

Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Twilight Princess kill -- absolutely kill -- all previous Zelda games. The previous titles are good for laying the foundation of the Zelda franchise, but lets not forget that Ocarina of Time is what turned Zelda into a true franchise, and for a reason.

Oh, lord...
What? I say fuck 3D. Those two games set the standard, and had a logical story. They were original, not cash cow milkings.

@ Cybrus: Zelda was a "franchise" long before N64. It was so right from the first. You're a little younger than me, so I don't fault your memeory. But trust me, the first was a BLOCKBUSTER hit. Sequels were inevitable, just like Resident Evil; it was just that huge out of the gate.

I think Link to the Past made Zelda a bigger franchise rather than Ocarina. Still, Ocarina was enjoyable to play.

Yes, I am aware of Zelda's popularity from the beginning. I remember the Zelda/Mario cereals and the Zelda/Mario cartoon/TV shows airing when I was younger. But Ocarina of Time launched an already popular game title into a true franchise. Ocarina is the single highest selling game in the Zelda line up. Twilight Princess is the second highest selling game of the line up. A Link to the Past is the third highest selling. While the Zelda titles were always popular, it was the leap into 3D that turned the game into a money making machine. Plus, the added storyline depth and character depth crushes the old 2D games. :tu:

It wasn't the leap into 3D, it was the evolution of videogaming in general. The later the generations, the higher the sales. More people, more money, higher installed console bases. That's why all sequel games have higher sales figures.

Wait, how in fuck did my blog get turned into a Zelda discussion?!

Anyway...

You mentioned Wii ordering. I guess you have one, since you got Mario World (I admit, you can't go wrong with that). Exactly how much money does it cost to get these game, on there? Are we talking about 5 bucks, or some outrageous $50 tag? I've always wondered about that.

It's not an exact price, but it is. I know that doesn't make any sense. You basically buy Wii Points. You can buy 2000 points for $18-$20 (depending on where you shop). So if you convert that, every 500 points is $5, basically. In the Wii Shop, games go by points. N64 games usually cost you 1000 points ($10), Super Nintendo games run you from 500-800 points ($5-$8), and Nintendo games will cost you 500 points ($5). I paid 800 points for Super Mario World. I'm having a great time playing this game. It's well worth $8 to me. They have nearly 400 games to choose from including games from Sega Genesis and a few other consoles that escape my mind.

Me! I tend to derail topics. :tu: :uhoh:

RPG games... I do own Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (PSP) and i found it pretty good to play... but most of the RPG type of games I have seen don't seem to appeal to me.
