Hard Copy Or Not To Hard Copy

BURN IT DOOOWWNNNNNNNN!
So for the past couple of weeks I’ve been contemplating whether or not I should start buying PC games digitally or stick to hardcopies. To be more specific, there’s this client named Steam that you can download for free and use the program to purchase a variety of different PC games they have available from their library. Some of these games include Devil May Cry 4, the F.E.A.R. series, the Assassin’s Creed series, the Call Of Duty series, just to name a few. But for those hardcore PC gamers, I’m sure all of this is just redundant.

The company responsible for Steam is Valve Corporation; they’re best known for the Half-Life and Portal series, and Team Fortress 2. The only reason I even I have Steam now is because Team Fortress 2 went free to play a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been hearing a lot about TF2 so I figured this was my chance to see what all the fuss is about. Turns out it’s not a bad multiplayer game. I also took the opportunity to catch up on the Half-Life series by playing Half-Life 2, episode one and episode two.

But Steam got me thinking on how convenient it is to simply buy a game off Steam and install them at your leisure. But there’s the issue of having to have a constant internet connection in order to play your game. There is an offline mode with Steam, but I read stories of how it fails and is not reliable a lot of the times. Not to mention downtimes that would prevent you from playing your games. Maybe I’ll just stick to actually buying a physical copy for the foreseeable future.

Oh, I finally got around to playing and beating Chrono Trigger. I’m thinking that Chrono Cross will be the next game I finally get around to playing.

Stand Back! There's a Hurricane Coming Through
I like the idea of downloading games, as long as I don't have to be online to play them. Also, I am always afraid of a corrupt file or something in the future that will eventually screw me out of the game. I always prefer to have the disc for a backup if nothing else. Same goes for movies. I buy movies a lot and they usually come with a digital copy also. I get the digital copies, but I still want the actual disc.

I've been using Steam for a while now, although I've only bought strategy games like Empire & Napoleon Total War, Civilisation 5 & Europa Universalis III thus far. I've never had any problems with the offline mode, admittedly I do tend to always be connected to the internet but there was a period of two weeks when my internet was down and I had no problems what so ever playing the games. I also like it for the fact you can add-non steam games to the game library which makes one convenient, organised place to launch all my games from. Also similar to Xbox Live, it's much more convenient to download demos from the Steam Store than browse for them online.

My only worry is the account, I mean I've spent a good £100 on games so far from the Steam Store and the account is the only evidence of that. If I lost access to the account then I'd lose over £100 in games. I havn't really played any of the games online so I can't really comment on the multiplayer aspect of it but it seems pretty cool. I only discovered you have a profile page where you can view peoples games among other stuff two months ago

Good to hear about the offline playing. I see you're playing Warhammer 40,000 now

I spent pretty much all my spare time playing that yesterday  I got the original Dawn Of War + 2 of the expansions for £10 so couldn't complain at that. I nearly bought Star Wars: Knight Of The Old Republic but I decided to wait until after I've beaten this one.

Oh and in regards to the offline play, if I remember rightly if you're not online then sometimes the achievements don't work but that's pretty much the only problem I've had with offline play.
