The Man. Any Questions?
|
Alrighty, here's the aforementioned gameplay walkthrough we discussed. I will only post a portion in this first post, breaking this game up into pieces, to give everyone a chance to talk about it. So, HERE WE GO! RESIDENT EVIL The first killer game for the then-new Playstation console, and the thing most responsible for killing Nintendo and allowing Sony to become the new leader in videogames. In shirt, a true classic in every sense. Get ready for a then-unseen experience in the world of horror... - We will be playing as Chris (hard scenario). I love Jill, but I figured we'd go this route because if you can beat the game with Chris, you'll blast through with Jill. Start up... It's July 1998 (then a couple years in the future!), and we've been sent to investigate strange killings. An earlier mission, involving Bravo team, met with disaster (unknown fate to us now). We get a cool live-action sequence (this was before everything was cgi) of us, Alpha team, getting bumrushed by killer dogs! Everyone runs for their lives, and we wind up in THE MANSION. The game begins here, ladies and germs... After a cutscene with some shitty voice-acting (hey, this isn't the Working Designs Lunar crew, some cut them some slack; it was 1996!), we take control in the Dining Room (I will name all rooms for the sake of navigation). Dining Room - just run through to the only door. Western Hallway - all doors are locked, so just turn into the end alcove...and see a cutscene of a ZOMBIE!! He's eating a fucking memeber of STARS Bravo! OH SHIT, he gets up and wants to eat us!! Just turn around, and run away. Back out the door, pronto. Dining Room - keep hauling ass back out. Main Hall - we view a cutscene. Jill and Wesker have vanished, and Jill's gun is left behind (how convenient). Well, what are you waiting for, dummy? Pick up the gun! Equip it, and let's go teach that zombie not to fuck with Chris Almighty. Dining Room - run through Western Hallway - find the ghoul, and let him have it! A few shots will drop him. Aim down to pop a cap in his back, and keep gunning him when he gets up (repeat this with ALL zombies). When you see a pool of blood spread out under a downed flesheater, that means he's dead(er). Now, go over to poor Kenneth (his head's been chewed away!), and check him twice for two CLIPS. Go back out. Dining Room - run through. Main Hall - cross and we see two doors; one is locked, so enter the blue door. Blue Room - hey, this looks cool. See the thing in the bowl of the statue? We're gonna get it! Push the stepladder up to the statue, climb it, and get the 1St FLOOR MAP. Now, push aside the case to reveal a backroom. WALK (don't run) in, seeing the "dead" zombie. He's NOT dead! HE FUCKING GRABBED ME!! To avoid getting your leg chewed on, first equip the KNIFE. That's right, we're going to go hands-on with this motherfucker. WALK to the extreme outside of the ghoul, and get behind him. Stand at his feet, and stab downward. HAHAHA! Look at this fucking jellybean, trying to turn! Stab the shit out of this idiot until dead. Now, grab the INK RIBBON off the shelf, and leave this whole room. Main Hall - take another INK RIBBON off the typewriter stand (combine them in inventory screen; always combine Ink Ribbons), but don't save yet. Let's head up those big-assed stairs... Main Hall Balcony - take the southeast door (check your map). Bloodstained Hall - see that twinkling in the vase? We get the SMALL KEY from it. Check it in inventory screen, and it becomes DESK KEY. Continue down the halll, and through the door. Outdoor Balcony - Go around the corner, and we see poor Forrest Speyer deader than Zach Gowen's career. DO NOT CHECK HIM! Crows will assault you if you do. Instead, stop just short and pick up a CLIP beside him. Let's get the hell out of here. Bloodstained Hall - run through. Main Hall Balcony - take the western door, now. Dining Room Balcony - see the zombie? Let's not fuck with him. Instead, run to the foreground, down that side. We bump into a statue. Start pushing it. We still have the KNIFE equipped, which is what we want. Stop pushing, but stay behind the statue. Laugh as we are completely safe from the second zombie! Slash the living shit out of him, and kill his ass in complete safey! With the KNIFE! Hahaha. Well, now switch to the Beretta. Turn and shoot the shit out of the other ghoul, who is just now getting all up on your ass. KILL! Now, push the statue off the balcony. It crashes below, and breakes. We'll get to that later. For now, run through and enter the only other door to this room. West Stairs Landing - OH SHIT!! Not one, but THREE zombies up in here! Cap them all. Bang-bang-bang. When all 3 are dead, go down the stairs. West Stairwell - two more ghouls to cap here. Kill them both. We're out of ammo! Well, no sweat, we'll get more (note: if you run out during the kilings, KNIFE their asses. If you weaken each with some shots, they'll go down easy). Enter the door by the stairs. Medical Room - What the fuck?! Some crazy bitch is macing me!! Oh, it's just Rebecca, medic of STARS Bravo team. Enjoy the cutscene here. When Rebecca asks to come with you, say YES. Let her tag along and roam the mansion. Now, go grab the SWORD KEY off the bed, and open the box. Take out the 2 CLIPS (told you we'd get more ammo), and go outside. West Stairwell - Now, shoot down that last zombie in this room. Go back to the safe room. Medical Room - It's now time to save our progress. SAVE #1 (3 saves left). Make your inventory like this: BERETTA; CLIP; SWORD KEY Now leave.... Edited by SRP76, Jul 21 2011, 06:58 PM.

Knife'em then shoot them with the pistol. That's my method unless I have to bring out the big guns. God I hate crows. |

You never have to battle a crow. Unless you stupidly check Forrest or press the wrong button in the Art Gallery. Oh, I forgot to mention something about this particular playthrough: it's not "fastest/easiest way". It's going through while attempting to kill every single enemy in the game (except crows and little spiders, which you can't reasonably attack anyway). With the exception of the re-spawning enemies, that is. I didn't quite get it done here, but it's damn close. Like, 4 or 5 total enemies left standing, throughout the entire game. If it were Jill, no problem; she gets a lot more ammo. |

Alright, now the second installment of the playthrough. ___________________________________ Exit the Medical Room... West Stairway - run through here and enter... Western Winding Passage - wow, a nice, brightly-lit hall for once. Too bad we can see two Zombies. Beretta them down. Taking the wide corridor to the right of the entrance, check the door on the right. Use the SWORD KEY on it, but we will NOT go in just yet! Keep going down the hall, and through the door. Western Hallway - we're back here now. Go to the end of the hall, and we can now open that red door. Lounge - hey, they've even got a bar in this mansion. Alrighty, let's go around the piano and see what's down the hall...oh, a shelf to move. Move it, and get the Music Notes. Try to use them on the piano, and see a cutscene with Rebecca. She needs to practice her piano playing for awhile, so let's leave. Western Hallway - to the Dining Room, Robin! Dining Room - remember smashing the statue? Go grab the Blue Jewel from the wreckage. Go back the way we came. Western Hallway - back to the Western Winding Passage. Western Winding Passage - take the offshoot corridor, and enter the door. Tiger Room - ah, puzzle time. A simple one. Just stick in the Blue Jewel, and the cat pukes you up a Wind Crest! Cool. Let's go. Western Winding Passage - back over to the Western Hallway. Western Hallway - to Dining Room. Dining Room - wheee! Run on through. Main Hall - blast through the blue doors. Blue Room - now we can unlock that door. Do so, and discard the key (freeing up the inventory). DO NOT ENTER! Retreat again... Main Hall - back to Dining Room. Dining Room - to Western Hallway. Western Hallway - to Western Winding Passage. Western Winding Passage - NOW we can enter that door in the corridor. Keeper's Room - grab the CLIP you see; now, let's see about this desk...HOLY SHIT!!! A ghoul pops out of the closet at us!! Sneaky fucking bastard! Run around to the other side of the bed, and kill the shit out of him! Fucker, scaring us like that. Now, we can read the Keeper's Diary (looks like the outbreak started May 11), and get the Shotgun Shells! Time to go. Western Winding Passage - to Western Hallway. Western Hallway - to Dining Room. Dining Room - Ahhhh...yes, it is now finally time to take that EMBLEM off the wall. Grab it, and go back. Western Hallway - time to see how Rebecca's doing. To the Lounge. Lounge - She did it! Great playing there, sis. Now, go on into the secret chamber and grab the GOLD EMBLEM. Stick the EMBLEM in its place, and let's get out of here. Western Hallway - to Dining Room. Dining Room - let's see what happens if we place the GOLD EMBLEM in the open spot...BINGO! Run over and grab the SHIELD KEY. Now, back to where it all began... Main Hall - stop right here to get ready for the next installment.

I finally got a copy of the game working after fiddling around with an emulator so I could follow along. I have to agree about the acting in those cut scenes at the start, it's just dreadful On my first play I got upstairs and ran down this corridor and into two or three zombies who just destroyed me. At the start should I pick up the shield that's in the dining room or that not important? Oh and is there a trick/technique to killing the zombies as I must have used 8 bullets to put down the first one you encounter in that corridor or is that just the normal amount it takes.

I use the psx emulator always. All the others, like epsxe and whatnot, use plugins and take all sorts of setup; psx just needs the bios, and you can play right away. The shield in the dining room I always leave until right before doing the piano puzzle. Simply because with only 6 inventory slots on Chris, you can't lug around a bunch of stuff all the time. Given that at least two are taken up by a gun and ammo, you've got to only take the "key items" you're going to be using immediately. The zombies' "toughness" varies. Some of them go down with only 4 shots, others can take more and KEEP getting up like 3 more times! Those Cena zombies are a real pain in the ass. Luckily, the game doesn't throw too many of those at you. Most of them you can keep down for good with 7 or 8 shots. |

I always liked the fact that Resident Evil wasn't just a zombie game, but a puzzle game as well. |

Definitely. It was more than a hack 'n slash or beat 'em up (which were the norm in 1995-1996). It was, as the game itself puts it, "survival horror". It created an entire new genre. I'll put the third part of the walkthrough up later on. ...by the way, DL, you couldn't find a better pic of Serge for your avy?! I've seen a lot better, son. Although, if you're going so far as to use that, you must be playing CC and liking it. I'm glad for that. Edited by SRP76, Jul 27 2011, 09:23 PM.

Yeah, I'm liking it a lot at the moment, still getting use to the flow of battle. Right now I'm back at in the dungeon where the game first started. |
