For the past week and a half, I've gotten into this great 70's-80's music phase, or, more importantly, what I would guess be called the "post punk" phase. These are bands such as The Cure, The Replacements, Squeeze, and Jesus and Mary Chain, the bands who have "punk" ideals, but also have a very poppy and mainstream sound. They are said to have started after the punk and underground phase wore through, and was the precursor to more modern alternative music. I've known about all of the aforementioned bands, but never really looked into them that much until I heard them predominantly on the radio last week when my favorite radio station was being pulled off the air. The difference was that they began playing lesser known songs from these bands (you know, playing "Letter to Elise" from The Cure instead of the overplayed "Friday I'm in Love", etc.), which definitely had a great emotional affect to them. I have downloaded the Greatest Hits album from The Replacements, who are considered the pioneers of alternative music, which I think is a great step to take in immersing myself more in this genre. Here are some of the songs I'm into right now: And also, I've REALLY gotten into The Velvet Underground, a hugely influential band from the 70's. I always liked their music even if I didn't know it was them, so I went out and got their greatest hits as well. One of the things fans of them say is that each album is considered a "masterpiece" in itself and needs to be listened to as such (each CD by itself and each song sequentially), but I went ahead and tried to give myself the full view of them. Guess that's it for now... |

Hmm. Reading this, and your other blogs/general posts on music. Your musical evolution is pretty a-typical. |

You mean like the way I jumped from alternative/grunge music to 80's lovey dovey stuff?

Well, I wouldn't go as far as to call it "lovey-dovey." But kind of, yeah. |

I know, I think it's pretty funny how I go through this. If you want the full range of my music liking, it's pretty much been: 90's: 90's mainstream pop/pop rock/dance Early 00's: Punk (Ramones, Clash, Dead Kennedys, Transplants) Mid 00's: 90's mainstream pop, rock, etc, and classic rock '06-08: Modern rock (Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin), feel-good rock '09: Just whatever ![]() '10: Grunge, namely my huge Nirvana phase, with a mix of everything else '11: Current 80's phase, and a bigger selection of early 90's rock (Presidents of the United States, Better than Ezra, etc.) I think that describes my tastes pretty well I think. |

Hmm. Pretty narrow selection. But you seem to know what you like. Edit: Well, not entirely narrow. But still. Edited by Jesus Omega, Jul 24 2011, 02:42 AM.

The Cure does not have a very poppy and mainstream sound. They had one album, Wish, with one song, Friday I'm In Love, that became a mainstream hit. Before that, The Cure and people that listened to them were considered weird. To me, that is their worst album by far. Top Albums by the Cure are: Pornography, The Head on the Door, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Disintegration & Bloodflowers. Songs I'd suggest: Lullaby Pictures of You Watching Me Fall Lovesong Hot Hot Hot! |

Are you really trying to say that Pictures of You doesn't sound poppy? |

Yes. Especially at the time it came out. None of the Cure's music ever got radio play. It's wasn't until someone remade their songs that they even started to get some credit in the "mainstream" for anything they had done. |

C'mon, that song even uses the pop chord progression. There's nothing about it that's not pop. |

I've never listened to The Cure, from the songs that were posted though they sound pretty good. What's the best album to really start listening to them though as I looked them up last night on wikipedia and saw they had like 15 albums out? |

I'll probably download that one myself. I'm liking their stuff. I LOVE The Replacements right now. They're all I've listened to in the past two days. I've just been going back and forth on the songs that are on their greatest hits. I think it's an obvious match since, like I said, people consider them the founders of alternative rock (my favorite genre), but their lyrics are so goofy and the sound on some of their songs is so trippy that I'm instantly hooked. I LOVE the instrumental work on this song: "Sun keeps rising in the west; I keep on waking fully confused."

I just looked and Disintegration is actually one of the albums available on Amazon's 100 CDs for $5 each month sale, so I'm going to go for it now. Like I've said, I download music a bunch of ways, but when I want to go for full albums and stuff, I usually end up buying it instead of trying to find a different way of downloading it. |
