The topic of this blog is simple: look at THIS list of albums off Amazon and tell me which two or three are worth getting and why.

NOTE: As of right this second, I've already purchased Jagged Little Pill, Disintegration, and Them Crooked Vultures.

Without knowing if you are into country or classic rock, I'm simply going to recommend Murmur by R.E.M.

I loved R.E.M. back in the day. I saw them in concert when they were on their Green tour. Lots of good songs there. Radio Free Europe is probably my favorite off the CD.

I'm hugely into classic rock.

Either way, downloaded. The thing is that I do have a lot of R.E.M. on my iPod, but most of the songs are the hits that everybody knows. What I've been trying to do all year is kind of reverse the trend where I just download bands' well-known songs (or simply songs I like), and start getting back into trying to take in unknown songs, which that album is to me for the most part.

If you are into classic rock:

The Guess Who: Greatest Hits
The Doobie Brothers Minute By Minute
Don Henley The End Of Innocence
Foreigner Head Games

All good albums.

What the hell is "classic" now? Nirvana was 20 years ago at this point, for fuck's sake. Time flies.

I actually bought this month's issue of Spin magazine because they had this whole thing on Nirvana's Nevermind album which is going to be 20 years old this year. They had artists talking about what it meant to them, what the album meant to music and why people cared about it so much, etc. It was actually pretty cool.

I'm familiar with everyone on the list, Purps, although I don't really know much by the Doobie Brothers. I'll pick and choose and see what I find most appealing based off of that.

BTW, I am LOVING the Jagged Little Pill album by Alanis Morissette. I always knew how good she was and I've heard "You Learn," "You Outta Know," "Ironic," and "Head Over Feet" a million times each, but I never heard the entire album as a whole. She is amazing. She is able to have that assertive style with her lyrics without really sounding like one of those anti-feminist feminist 90's singers (maybe Liz Phair is an example of that?) which I think is great.

Oh, and if we want to bring it back to funny coincidences, just because I downloaded both of these bands: Taylor Hawkins, drummer of the Foo Fighters, was drummer for Alanis Morissette during the Jagged Little Pill tour (not sure if he's the credited drummer on the album). Dave Grohl, lead singer of the Foo Fighters, credited drummer on the second album, etc. et al, is the drummer for Them Crooked Vultures. I don't even plan this stuff out, but it's amazing how far their musical reach has been.

I still consider Classic Rock at this point to be from about 1985 back.
