STAY HYPED!!!

I just watched the movie for the first time. I thought the movie was a perfectly enjoyable movie, albeit kind of long, but I do not understand why this became the highest grossing movie of all time. I'm sure a lot of forum members have seen the movie. What did you all think of it? |

It's a fabulous new day, yes it is!

Great film, but massively overhyped. The story of Avatar isn't exactly new by any means. Remember Dancing With Wolves? Avatar is similar to DWW. And there's other films similar to Avatar. But it was visually spectacular. The big reason why Avatar drew so much money was thanks to 3D tickets (check the price for them). Many people that saw it paid to see it in 3D. Plus, Avatar stayed there for months at the theaters and it's the kind of movie that is better off being watched in 3D during its theater release. |

The Two-Time 6SW Know-It-All Champion!

It was also made by James Cameron, The same person who directed Titanic, the previous highest grossing movie, Terminator 1 & 2, and Aliens. So if anyone knew that, they were going to watch the movie. For me, I thought it was okay, but that was it. Don't think it was utter crap, but I really don't think it's good, either. |

Yeah, the 3D aspect and special effects were the selling point of the film and like MY said, 3D tickets costs more than a regular ticket. |

The Man. Any Questions?

No, but I remember Dances With Wolves. Anyway, yes, gross money is not an accurate measure. Gone With the Wind is still the most-"viewed" movie of all time, with something like 25 MILLION more tickets sold than second-place Star Wars. For a modern film to beat it, it would have to gross upwards of 1.5 billion. Not happening. And yeah, the movie's just a rehash of the same plot from several others. But it has mutated Smurfs, so people dig that. I was able to sit through the movie, so it wasn't terrible. Don't have any urge to see it again, though. |

Yeah it was pretty meh. The actual selling point of the movie wasn't the story, but how it was created. |

I thought it was alright, I think it was one of those films that you needed to see in the cinema with 3D though. I just watched it on DVD and well it was an enjoyable enough Sci Fi film but not exactly the most original or complex story ever. Military character fights against natives, he then experiences and accepts their culture, personal U-turn and then fights against his former employers/team to save it. When it ended it just reminded me of the Last Samurai (in basic premise and plot points, not all of it )

So you guys are telling me that Avatar made over $2.7 Billion because it was 3D? I am not sure if I can accept that if for no other reason than almost every movie is released in 3D now and none are coming anywhere close to the success of Avatar. And there were 3D movies before Avatar, so it's not like this was the first to ever happen. |

3D tickets is a very big reason of why it grossed so much. The way it was marketed and presented, Avatar was pretty much a must-see on 3D. From a visual standpoint, it was also innovative. There were 3D films before, yes. But none of them were as must-see as Avatar and 3D wasn't heavily used as nowadays. Avatar changed things and that's why you now see films offered in 3D trying to cash in like Avatar did. But I think the 3D gimmick might fade away eventually. Not every film released in 3D has done the 3D gimmick as well executed as Avatar did. |

I agree with this. We've seen the 3D fade before, both in movies and TV shows. It never stays around too long. |

3D has been around since the 1950's. I don't even understand why it's gotten so hot again. Most 3D films annoy me and make my head hurt. I can enjoy the exact same film in 2D and not have to wear those dorky glasses. |

The word Cybrus is missing is "hype". That's how anyone knew about the "innovations" in the film and all that, and that's what made people want to see it, plain and simple. Hype. HUGE hype. They stuck it in your face, and smacked you with its penis every minute of the day for months before it came out. |
