Jack Swagger is the new U.S. Champ. Dude is solid, I honestly think he'd benefit more from having Vickie in his corner than Ziggler.

So Cena beat the crap out of Swagger why exactly? I get the "Let the Hate Flow" thing, but why exactly was he pissed at Swagger. Swagger wasn't the one who injured Ryder; he didn't even cheat to beat him.

Wasn't that the deal with Vince as well. At least initially, before he went completely batshit insane.

So Cena beat the crap out of Swagger why exactly? I get the "Let the Hate Flow" thing, but why exactly was he pissed at Swagger. Swagger wasn't the one who injured Ryder; he didn't even cheat to beat him.
Ok, the main point was to show that Jack Swagger getting the US Title wasn't about giving him a new push, but it was about just getting the title off Zack Ryder. Swagger and the US Title still mean nothing to WWE. The storyline reason was that Swagger took advantage of Cena's friend Ryder when he was injured and Swagger had to pay. Plus, it was Cena's way to take out his frustrations against John L on Swagger. And finally, it allowed Kane to say "embrace the hate" again. Who knew one beat down could accomplish so much, right?

I think we can all move past the silly "zach ryder is getting a push!" thinking and just admit that he's nothing more than a pawn in the John Cena saga, right? He may be working with bigger names, but he's still just enhancement talent. Bro.

John L was hilarious when talking to Eve backstage. Eve was expressing her concerns and he just says "Shut your mouth!". Great stuff!

I had my doubts last week, but I think I am a full fledged fan of Brodus Clay now. He's got a crappy gimmick, but he's rolling with it and is just hilarious in what he does. His facial expressions, his body movements, and even his shouting out in his matches are all just great. "Should I get him?!". Great stuff!

Jericho trolling the audience again. They were really into him being tagged in and he just did the "yeah! yeah! yeah!" bit and walking out again. Assuming they are stretching this out for a WM pay off, then we still have a few more weeks of Jericho trolling. Wonder how they'll make it seem fresh each week.

With John L openly admitting that he's going to screw Punk at the Rumble, how will Punk react next week? Will he just threaten to beat him up again?

I like Mick Foley's current role. I think the Royal Rumble is a great time to use aged performers that really cannot work a full program anymore. It allows the fans to pop for them, allows them to work a little, but allows them to be protected at the same time. No one is going to buy the Royal Rumble because a name is announced. Everyone is buying the Royal Rumble because it is the Royal Rumble.

I liked Raw a lot this week. This was the most I've enjoyed Raw in a while, actually.

Just like Cena took advantage of Rey Mysterio after Rey Rey won that tournament for the WWE Championship?

I understand the story, it's just that Cena can be such a bloody hypocrite sometimes.

Intresting article about Brodus Clay, and it touches on your boy Ryder. I think it's worth a read.

One of the reporters from ProWrestling.net was actually at Raw Monday night. Here are his comments on what he experienced:

ProWrestling.net

- What a nice surprise it was for the fans in Anaheim to see Mick Foley return. He has been on Raw in non-serious segments since leaving TNA, but this was a true return to Mick Foley being involved in an angle.

- Foley’s entrance pop and the mega-heat garnered by Vickie Guerrero and Dolph Ziggler showed just how hot the crowd in Anaheim was. The building was electric in a way that I have not seen in years. I’ve been attending events in this arena since 1999 and this was the most excited and into a complete show that I have seen a crowd.

- Dolph Ziggler cut the best promo of his career on Mick Foley. It was mean spirited in the way that a heel should be and his delivery was perfect. If Ziggler can put forth efforts like that on a weekly (or even monthly) basis, he will be in the upper echelon in WWE for a very long time.

- While I don’t feel like Mick Foley can do what he used to be able to do in the ring (and hasn’t been able to since 2007), I’m intrigued by the idea of him in a WrestleMania feud with Dolph Ziggler. This program could be huge for Ziggler and put Foley back in the WrestleMania highlight reel.

- C.M. Punk was definitely on his game in the opening segment and aside from one line that I thought was too far (mocking Vickie concerning eating disorders) he delivered a nice promo that tied together the Mick Foley-Dolph Ziggler promo with his ongoing program with Ziggler and Laurinaitis.

- C.M. Punk says that he is the best wrestler in the world. This show felt like a seed planting night with the Rumble in WWE’s short-term sights and WrestleMania on the horizon. Was this the first of many hints for a Chris Jericho and C.M. Punk feud?

- John Laurinaitis was fantastic at playing the jerk, middle management heel in the opening and that continued through the show. I’ll be discussing him again later in this post.

- There was no real announcement about the WWE Tag Team Championship change in the arena. Fans just saw Air Boom then some video highlights with no sound from the house show title change yesterday.

- Was their entrance last night Epico and Primo’s first actual entrance as a tag team on Raw? I seem to remember them being in the ring as we returned from commercial quite often.

- Fans booed indifferently as Epico and Primo entered, but then cheered as Rosa Mendes started to dance. With her as a part of the act, I don’t see them staying heels for long.

- I was hoping to see more than three minutes given to the new tag champions and the former champions, but the match that we saw was fast-paced and exciting. I am interested in what happens to Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne now that they have dropped the tag titles.

- Chris Jericho’s jacket was not on-sale at merchandise stands around the arena, which may very well be the biggest missed money-making opportunity in WWE history. On that note, I counted at least four signs with lights on them for Jericho.

- I feel bad for Las Vegas. Every wrestling show that comes to their area has to patronize them and promote what the rest of the country thinks Vegas is. “Sin City” Smackdown is just more of that.

- Eve is not a good enough actress to be believable with Zack Ryder. She is constantly put in positions to enhance an act and always fails to do so. I felt like it was more of that with Ryder on this show.

- Zack Ryder was not cheered overwhelmingly when he first entered, but the crowd warmed up to him. There is still work to be done with many of the mainstream fans and getting them to appreciate what Ryder brings to the table.

- I was getting concerned during the Jack Swagger vs. Zack Ryder match that they would end up making Swagger look weak by having Ryder kick out of his finisher so many times, but it was a pretty good idea. Ryder was well protected while Swagger got to look pretty tough.

- Taking the U.S. Championship off of Zack Ryder at this point is odd. Was he not performing up to expectations or is this simply a way to send the character on another quest, which will get him more over. The worst that could happen is that he will be permanently attached to John Cena in the build to WrestleMania, which is not necessary.

- In the arena, there were constant advertisements for WrestleMania XXVIII and John Cena vs. The Rock. I found this curious since that event is on the other side of the country and there are two WWE events next month within an hour of Anaheim and neither was mentioned.

- There is a real storyline inconsistency with Jack Swagger winning the United States Championship when Zack Ryder was not medically cleared to compete. The devil is always in the details and concerning the major storyline that revolved around that point in November (Daniel Bryan and Mark Henry), WWE should have paid closer attention.

- The Perez Hilton section of the show was surreal in how bad and silly it was. Lucky for everyone it was over quickly.

- Royal Rumble 1992 has to be the best Royal Rumble match ever. The performances of Bobby Heenan on commentary and Ric Flair in the ring were true works of art. Go out of your way to watch the entire match if you can.

- R-Truth’s pictures were totally not taken at Disneyland.

- Every year around this time we are treated to a cavalcade of battle royals so any fan can figure out how they work in time for the Royal Rumble match. From the very beginning of the segment it seemed that R-Truth, Sheamus, The Miz and Wade Barrett were destined for this fate.

- Sheamus needs a real feud with a credible opponent, and he needs one quickly.

- The arena was so loud with anti-Cena sentiment that I couldn’t hear the John Cena and John Laurinaitis backstage exchange.

- It was fun to see John Cena get truly (and perhaps ruthlessly) aggressive. It did not do much for Swagger, although he has to excuse of a match earlier in the night. The Kane interruption about Cena embracing hate was just about what I expected.

- Kane needs to ditch the welding mask and rock a Sith/Jedi style robe.

- Brodus Clay got a pretty good reaction in the arena and was very fun to watch live. The fans were into his entrance and then they came down a little for the actual match. The Brodus interaction with the crowd was very fun, but the crowd didn’t quite pay it back.

- The reaction for Brodus was not tepid. It was not a superstar reaction, but for week two of a new act, it seemed fun. When the show went to commercial after his match, Clay was applauded and got a huge pop for posing on the stage.

- Daniel Bryan’s reaction was almost purely a heel reaction from the crowd. This surprised me, since he has not completely turned. His promo towards Big Show garnered him even more heat with the crowd and was one of the better promos Bryan has cut in his career. This was some really nice work from a talent not known for his mic work.

- Chris Jericho was absolutely hilarious in his return to the ring. He was hyping the crowd up all the way through the match and he milked that hot tag for all it was worth. The crowd was extremely loud for Jericho and his run into the ring and then back out after tagging Bryan was brilliant. I was cracking up as Jericho walked away.

- From the moment Mick Foley came to the ring, I smelled a Dusty Finish coming. It was still an exciting moment and the crowd hit a fevered pitch for Mr. Socko’s appearance.

- That was the right way to use a Dusty Finish. It was on free television, it lead somewhere storyline wise and there was still a big babyface moment after the finish was taken away from the babyfaces.

- C.M. Punk did not cut an insider shoot promo on John Laurinaitis cutting him down for things no one knew about. He cut a pro wrestling promo on John Laurinaitis, airing his grievances and assuring his enemy that he would come out victorious. This is exactly what Punk needs to do more of. This promo was great.

- WWE made a clever move ratings-wise with this show. At 8:00pm Mick Foley was in the ring dominating David Otunga and about to break out Mr. Socko. This was enough to hook people in for the great promo segment that followed. When we discuss using a past star, but making sure to get a younger one over, this is what we’re talking about. Viewers stopped switching channels for Foley and now know the passion and anger behind Punk, so hopefully they will want to see him in that segment again.

- John Laurinaitis’ meltdown was pitch perfect to me. He still came off like a heel that had been outwitted, not a sympathetic character. His sudden attack on Mick Foley was great for building up his heat and Foley’s eventual revenge. He has been pretty good in recent weeks and this was his best performance to date.

What a difference a week makes! Last week’s Raw felt like an overbooked mess that would usually belong on Spike TV on Thursdays. This week’s show felt like it had one eye on the Royal Rumble and the other on WrestleMania. This was a show with focus, intensity and great pacing. There was a lot to it, but it didn’t feel like overload.

Looking forward, WWE has something there with Punk vs. Laurinaitis (no, it isn’t Austin and McMahon, but it is its own story), Foley vs. Ziggler and more. This Raw was a very positive experience both from an on-screen perspective and from being in the arena. This was one of the best TV shows WWE has produced in a few years because it was a total package, not just one or two big segments.

To be fair, Eve has been paired with several acts and has sucked at them all. So it isn't just that she's terrible with Zack Ryder (who is equally terrible) as much as it is she just sucks.

Because WWE has no interest in making Ryder a star. They are interested in a short term pay off and that's it. They have no desire to let him grow as a performer or do anything to make his act fresh. He's the same dork character now that he was when he first showed up.
