It something about having people volunteer to have their name changed, but the only choice in the matter they'd have is by choosing a number when the raffle starts. The potential names would be created by whoever wishes to participate (don't have to enter the raffle, but it'd be encouraged) and the names would be randomly assigned numbers 1 through however many names were sent, the number the entrant chooses would be their new name for at least a month. I thought it was a fun idea and could result in some fun atypical names but...

I'm still somewhat unsure myself since it was just an idea I was playing with , but the basic gist of it is:It would require some volunteers that are okay with having their name changed for at least month, regardless of the outcome. When all/most volunteers have been registered, then potential new names for inclusion in the raffle would be requested - but not necessarily required - from all volunteers (restricted only to volunteers to encourage participation?). I would say just send them to me since the raffle is my concept, but in the interest of impartiality, it'd probably be better for you to handle that. Once names have been gathered (within a time limit of... three days or so?) and assigned random numbers by the manager, then each volunteer would be asked to choose a number between one and however many names have been assembled. Each number can only be chosen once and the resulting name matched with that number would become the poster's new username for at least one month. If enough names are assembled, then maybe give the option for a second chance drawing for a chance at a new name - but with the result being final and no reverting back to the formerly drawn name. This would also strike the first chosen name/number from availability for anyone. --- I think that more or less covers it. Honestly, I think it could be a fun idea but it all depends on user participation. If it winds up being, like, just three or four people then it's not going to be as fun as if it had more forum wide participation. I'd say to just start it now but I don't know if there is enough interest to justify it. ![]() It doesn't require a lot of effort except some creativity so it couldn't hurt for people to try. Worst case scenario: you wind up with a name you don't care for for a month.

Just to make sure I understand the way this works: Everyone that signs up would put make a name suggestion. All those name suggestions would be randomized (using a randomizer?) and whatever random name you get is yours for a month? I've already signed up, but I am absolutely totally in!

More or less, but I don't think the name suggestions should be limited to just one. I think the more the better as long as the number doesn't get too ridiculous (more than, like, 50 would be overkill probably ).

Then I would encourage everybody who has signed up to start thinking up some names (think outside of the box) and for a time limit to start before people start picking numbers. Personally, I would recommend at least a few days, maybe a week even, before telling people to start picking numbers. That way it can give plenty of time to think up some names and give more time for people to be early participants in this.

I'm writing some up right now myself. Should we have a limit as to how many a poster can submit, or go with more of a "the more the merrier" approach? And what exactly is the character limit for a username, anyway? Edited by Kraul, Jan 26 2012, 12:49 PM.

I counted 200 before giving up. I think we should go with maybe some kind of limit, but a flexible one. Give everyone a chance to participate and not have some crazy high number names either. |

A week and people will have forgotten all about this! ![]() Do we submit names here or do we PM them to someone?
I think 5 per should be good enough. That'd give us 25 names in the entire name bank. And if I'm understanding this right, if we don't like the first name we get we could request another dip in the name bank? I think there should be a limit and once you reach that limit you must stick with the last name picked. This may have been covered, but I forget. ![]()
I'm not entirely sure what the limit is. There is a limit though because when I was changing your name the other day it wouldn't let me go with what I wanted. midget did the entire alphabet so at least 25, but maybe more. As a rule of thumb, nothing that stretches the pages. |

True about the week time limit. How about three days by a specific time? I would stick to PMs to keep it more of a surprise, that way people have little idea of what they can expect outside of the names they may have submitted. I had been imagining you handling it since you've got more of impartial authority role, but I can do it if you don't want to. And yeah, a randomizer like something like this would work well enough.
I already have eleven names after some second thoughts and what not, but I can live with five each.
I was thinking something along the lines of having two chances to pick a number, but if someone chooses to take that second chance then they are stuck with the result - no going back to the former drawn name. That will make it a gamble. And all of them will have the minimum month gimmick, of course.
Yeah, I figured one of my purposely outdated meme names I made up wouldn't fit anyway.

I think when all participants are signed up, we should create a new thread for the number choosing and name reveals just to minimize the confusion and cluttered aspect of this. Which I guess brings up a point with how the name change will occur. I was originally thinking of people's names changing automatically, but I didn't think about those who sign off when they leave the site so I guess it'd be best to respond to each participant in said new thread to publicly reveal what their new name is and give them a little time to acknowledge the change (so people aren't locked out of accounts by this). |

Good luck with that. I've read this entire thread, signed up, and am encouraging others to sign up and I'm still not exactly sure how it works!
Well, if we do it automatically then whomever in charge could just list all the old/new names in the thread. If we are letting everyone decide to reject their first name and settle on the second name, then PM wold probably be best. ![]() |

A combination of both would probably be the best, imo. Maybe something like: - First notify the poster via PM what their drawn name is, giving them a chance at one more re-draw. - When the name is finalized, then their name is officially changed and publicly revealed. - In the first post of the new thread, contain a list of who is who to help alleviate some confusion. Pretty basic, more or less.
Yeah, I might have to try and make a really clear outline of everything when I'm more awake later but I think the general idea is getting across well enough for the time being.
