I am interested in buying a laptop. But there are a few different selections and I'm not sure I understand the differences. For the most part, I think a laptop, notebook, and netbook are all basically the same thing with the size being the only difference. But what about a tablet? Can it do all the things a laptop can do? Can I browse the internet? Can I save things? Can I use things like headphones, cameras, etc? |

You're right concerning notebooks and Laptops. The only real difference is that Notebooks are slimmer. Now with Netbooks, they're ultra-portable (being about 11 to 12 inches) but comes with a smaller harddrive size and no DVD drive as result. Now the tablet vs Laptop question really comes down to what you actually plan to use it for; work or leisure? As a College Student, I'd almost always would by a laptop over a Tablet. But that's because I'm majoring in IT and I do a lot of programming, and webdesign work for my classes. If you need heavy computer uses for classes or work, then a laptop would be far better to get than a Tablet. If you're just getting it for leisure (and don't plan to do any PC gaming) then the Tablet may be up your alley since it's portable, has the apps, and an improving game market. As for which Tablet to get. No clue there. I haven't done much research in the tablet market but I do know a few things; Yes, you can browse the internet with it, but only a select few tablets support Flash Player though so you won't be able to make use out of sites like Youtube. The Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook are the "cheapest" tablets, but that's because they're primary function is to the be E-Readers. Edited by Lionheart, Jan 30 2012, 05:23 PM.

Well, I am looking for something that I can use as a portable computer. I want something that I could use to post on the forums, listen on Youtube, and do all the normal stuff I'd do at my desktop computer. I have been reading that tablets aren't great for people that want to type a lot, so I was already leaning against tablets. If just typing a normal post on 6 Star would be a chore on a tablet, then I wouldn't want it. Never mind anything else. But now that you say that Flash isn't even supported on many tablets, then I think my interest in tablets dropped completely. Portability for my laptop is an issue, but not a huge issue. I'm looking for something I could maybe take from room to room in my own house, not something that I'd be putting in a backpack and taking everywhere. My desktop is limited to just the one room. A laptop I could take anywhere I wanted. So I am probably going to get an actual laptop since I want a bigger sized screen. I guess it'll come down to screen size vs price tag. I would love a 17 inch laptop, but those look to be pricey. 10 inch ones seem kind of small to me. Maybe I'll find a comfortable medium between the two? |

I ended up buying the biggest screen size they had. I bought a 17.3inch HP Notebook. I'm not sure what makes it a notebook since it's huge. I was looking at the 15inche sized ones, but the one I bought was actually $50 cheaper so I bought it. I've been on desktops pretty much the entire time I've had a computer. I have been on a laptop before, but not for an extended amount of time. Now that I've got my own, there are definitely some differences I've noticed. The most obvious is typing. It takes a little getting used to the keyboard being in your lap, so I make a lot of typos and bad keystrokes. But it's a learning process. I've also noticed that the monitor looks a bit weird if it's angled wrong. I don't really know how to describe what I'm talking about, but I do find I have to readjust the monitor if I change positions just to keep everything looking right. The battery life on this thing sucks. I use it mostly in my room, so I have a power outlet nearby, but if I didn't have a power source then I'd only have about 3 or 4 hours worth of using time before my battery would die That seems short. The built in mouse for my HP Notebook is pretty good. I'm having to learn the various shortcuts, but it works well enough. But I'm still thinking about buying a mouse accessory. I know the wireless mouse require batteries, but if you buy a mouse with a wire then you don't need batteries, right? Anyone? Another question, is it true that if you have your laptop on your bed or something that it can overheat? I've had it on my legs and it has gotten really hot. I definitely don't want this thing to overheat and break on me. |

Ive bet you've made a lot of bad strokes with your hands in your lap. Change screen brightness on the laptop of the CPU to extend battery life. |
