Dumbledore put a spell on Harry that protected Harry. This spell will only work for as long as Harry can call a relative home. By the spell, Harry must return to the place he calls home at least once a year. All he has to do is go back there and call it home, with the understanding from his family that he can come back whenever he wants. So Harry can actually leave the Dursley's and stay with friends. He just hasn't yet. Something in the next movie too, but I will not discuss that yet.

If I'm reading that right, then Harry could show up at their place, call it home, and then immediately go back to Hogwarts and still be protected? If so, why didn't he ever just do that?

And that's why you should read the books, fella! :tu:

I could never do that.

My interest in traditional magic realms and such doesn't extend much farther beyond the Harry Potter and LotR movies, so the jargon and atmosphere quickly grows tired for me outside of the films. I couldn't attempt to spend too long reading all of it, for sure. It would probably be very counter-productive towards my interest if anything.

My interest in fantastical settings lies mostly in sci-fi areas, like Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly or Mass Effect. I have no problem absorbing that kind of information en masse.

Although I don't read books on any of them anymore since I simply can not read fiction and keep interested in recent years (I think I'm done for good), so this entire part of the post is kind of moot anyway I suppose. :-/

I think they hurt themselves by having Hagrid return at the very end for the "feel good moment" to close the movie. That's not how it ends in the book. By having Hagrid come back so happily and just blaming Ron's bird for his return delay, then it kind of makes it seem like it was no big deal for Hagrid, but that's not true.

That's probably the main reason why I thought he was just being held in some sort of processing pre-prison kind of area. Under custody of the Ministry of Magic, but not yet in an Azkaban cell.

Being punished in that world must really suck. No trial? Just straight off to an awful and dangerous prison? :-/

The first two movies follow the books very well. They take very little creative licenses with the movies. There are a few changes, but basically what you saw is what you'd read.

Then yeah, she probably just hadn't grown as an author yet.

Then again, since I've never read anything of her's I could always assume that she's just a mediocre author and that the films make her stories better. The popularity of the books doesn't mean anything since the Twilight books are massively popular and are widely considered utter trash by even people who don't automatically hate everything Twilight. :-/

Not back to Hogwarts, no. School is closed during the summer. The teachers go back to their own homes. But he could go stay with a friend or something, maybe.

There are trials. I'm not sure why Hagrid was sent straight to Azkaban here. The first 2 books are kind of a different animal than the rest of the books/movies.

Quote:

I don't think that's it. I think it's more that she just didn't know what she wanted to do with Harry Potter just yet. I think she was just going to have Harry go on little adventures in each book or something, but then she really found her stride and discovered what she wanted Harry Potter to be after the third book. Or maybe she knew there was just some things she couldn't do when the characters were that young and kept them in "kiddie safe" storylines.

Oh, no. No. Absolutely not. The books are far superior to the movies. Far, far, FAR superior. She's actually a good writer and the books are fantastic reads. It's a shame that the movies don't match up to the books.

Why not stay with Hagrid? Or Dumbledore then?

He spends a huge amount of time with Hagrid already, and Dumbledore already goes out of his way to give Harry preferential treatment so it's not like that would be something new and scandalous.

I'm just gonna call it lazy writing. It happens all the time in movies and books. Even some of the better ones. They need somebody to do something or go somewhere just to be out of the picture so they just do it.

He does leave the Dursleys in later movies. I think the first few movies are just to show how awful his home life is so that you can see why he loves Hogwarts as much as he does.

Yeah, maybe. I still think the first 2 books were aimed at the younger age groups and maybe she just didn't want to bore her target with such details.

Alright here we go with The Prisoner of Azkaban.

Movie opens with Harry playing with magic under his sheets, late at night. I'm just happy this is a family movie so they didn't zoom in to show Harry using magic to masturbate. :-/

And we start off with more of his horrid family, which just seems to get even more awful the more of them is revealed. His uncle's sister is the worst so far.

Fuck yes, Harry! Make these fools respect the true power of the Force! I hope she pops. Hopefully she gets sucked into a jet turbine. I... uh.... I would be a dark wizard, I think.

Finally, it's moving day. I'm surprised it took him this long. What is he supposed to be? About 14 years old or so? A decade and a half with that family for somebody not as noble but just as magically gifted would probably end in a much... messier fashion.

I remember this bus! ...kind of. I just remember it stretching and shrinking and what not. Maybe it being attacked, but I think that might be from another movie or something. Ha, I remember the driver and that shrunken head, too.

Sirius Black, that's his name. I remembered his appearance and the wolf bit, but not the name. Isn't he Harry's uncle or godfather or some kind of direct link like that? I feel like it's the case but I may be mistaken. Maybe I'll find out later in this movie.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one confused by the wizard law not being upset at what happened with that shrew of a woman.

It's kind of funny knowing what's going to happen with that rat to see that they're using an obviously animatronic rat much of the time in this movie and keep going out of their way to nudge the audience's attention towards it.

This scene on the train has me thinking about dark vs light wizardry and I have to say that the world of dark wizardry definitely appeals to me much more than the world of light. If I was in this world, I know which direction I would be leaning towards... although I don't know that I would necessarily be on Team Voldemort as a Death Eater or be against Harry. I'd be dark, but I don't think dark necessarily has to be evil...

That reflection in the window was creepy. Uncanny valley, anyone?

A question about Hogwarts: does every person in the wizard world go to Hogwarts? I was just wondering because there are a lot of students and if this has been happening for even just a few hundred years, then that would produce a lot of adult wizards...

Wait a minute... Dumbledore here. Is this the new one? Was it the same guy in the first two movies or was this guy Dumbledore in Chamber of Secrets, also? He was just talking and he seemed very different than last time. And  at the singing lady.

Are those dementors really looking for Sirius Black... or the one who possesses the one true ring?

I ge the distinct feeling that this teacher and Beavis & Butthead's teacher would make for a great couple. Is Hermione splitting herself or astral traveling somehow to learn more at Hogwarts?

The... whatever it is just took a shit. And the poop magically disappeared? Why is everybody so scared to meet it? I would be all about it.

...and then Harry loses his grip, Voldemort rises to power, and this realm (and likely the muggle world) is forever doomed. Way to go, Hagrid. Jeez...

I seriously can not wait for Malfoy to get his. Fuck. I think I dislike him even more than I would normally because he reminds me of a more cartoonishly "bad" version of somebody I know, who is an arrogant guy who likes to pretend he's tough but holy crap what a bitch.

These words... it makes it really hard to type up play-by-play while watching it and taking in this words for the first time. I don't even want to [try most of the time. Oh, poor Neville... this probably won't be good. Surprisingly nothing bad happened to him.

I'm surprised Harry wasn't at the front of the line. He's usually the focus of everything. Speaking of Harry... this is going to be good... I was fully expecting Voldemort in some form, not a (looks up a few entries ago) dementor. Oh... well then... I guess I'm not alone with expecting Voldemort.

Huh. So the paintings can jump into each others worlds/paintings? Curious and curiouser. I'm even more curious as to how they and their world work now.

Yeah, Hermione must be using some kind of spell to duplicate herself or something.

How different this movie would be if when Harry looked down the note said "Do You Like Me? [] Yes []No"

Ew... Quidditch. Hurry on then, movie. Get that damn snitch and end it already, Harry. Jesus... you'd think there would be rules against going that high in the game. "Arresto Momen... ooh. Damn. Game's over, kids! Nothing to see here!"

"Perhaps I should teach you how to defend yourself against these powerful creatures that are intent on getting you. But in a few months, maybe. Good luck, Potter!"

More of the twins = ratings. Even if they both sound like Ringo Starr. It looks like they improved their technique for the invisible cloak a lot in the few years between the first movie and this one. I can't explain exactly how, but somehow. Those three might be the most inept bullies since Bulk & Skull. Oh my god, that laughing by Hermione was so incredibly fake.

Close-up on the bartender, camera man. She looked like a bit of a wild cougar from what I saw. It sounded like Ron just said "faggots" under his breath.

Sirius is Harry's Godfather! I thought so.

Is it bad that I wouldn't have any idea of any very happy memory to use for this spell if I was in Harry's situation? I can't think of a single memory that would be strong enough. I wonder what Harry's chosen memory is exactly...? Oh. Nevermind then. That answers that. That's been happening a lot in this movie. Instant answers.

Whoa... Hagrid's hair has lightened and greyed substantially. Fucking Malfoy. "You tell those spiders, Ron"

Is Peter the rat...? Snape is easily one of the more interesting characters in this series. Even knowing what little I know about what happens with him later on, I still feel left wondering whose side he is on exactly or what is going on inside that head of his. Do none of the teachers ever sleep?

Hmm. Something is up with Hermione. Interesting.

Ooh... I think I remember this part. Don't they secretly get away with Buckley (or what it's name is)? I remember this scene with Hermione confronting Malfoy and throwing her really awkward punch being used a lot during promotion for the film. It's probably the most familiar scene for me. They didn't take Buckley? Fucking hell. :(

At this point in time, I think if I was to list out my favorite characters so far, it would be:

1. Severus Snape
2. Voldemort
3. Hagrid
4. Hermione
5. Neville?

I vaguely remember this part with the womping willow, or whatever it's called. You know, with all these magical powers, you'd think they'd know some kind of spell to permanently correct your vision, making glasses pointless. Fucking hell, Hermione has a grip like Hercules. Remind me to steer clear of her hand jobs. :uhoh:

It's evil Aragorn! Whoa... that's a twist I never saw coming/completely forgotten about. Wait wait wait. His name is Remus? As in Remus and Romulus? If I would have known that, I might have seen it coming (if you don't know what I mean, look up the Remus and Romulus legend). And yep, Peter is the rat. That's right. Very suspicious that Snape is the first on the scene.

I wonder... does Peter look and act rat-like in human form because he already looked and acted like that twelve years ago or because he's been a rat for so long?

I really don't know who is bad and who isn't right now. I thought Remus just made a heel turn but now I don't think he did. Meanwhile, I knew Sirius Black was basically a face confused for a heel. I guess Remus isn't a heel after all? Or maybe it's a set-up for a... triple swerve? Somebody needs to petrify him right now. Cure it later. Very good werewolf transformation. More realistic and painful looking than you usually see since the 80s ended. I bet it scared the crap out of a lot of kids.

So... are Remus and Black brothers? They both have wolf forms. It would add to the Remus and Romulus myth background.

If only Frodo had a wand on his journey. What exactly are the dementors supposed to do, anyway? I missed what their sucking power is all about. Is this light Aragorn's elf lover come to save him and Frodo?

13. I see. So then that makes them about 11 in the first movie, yeah? Eight movies, but seven stories basically so... yep. 18 when it all ends then. If only my school years were this exciting. Other than the whole Columbine business, they were utterly forgettable.

The plot thickens. And I think this is usually the part when I gave up in my first viewing of it because I wasn't paying attention so I didn't know WTF was happening. I've seen pieces of this several times before, but never all at once.

Ah, well that explains Hermione's extra work. I wonder if that means she's basically a year or several months older than everybody else then? Tricking thing about time travel, that. The traveler still ages.

And I thought they saved that animal (whose name I'm really unsure about now... Buppy maybe? Bugpy? Bupeak? Bubeak? Fuck I don't know...). Whoa. Meta. They were always there. Wait then, if they were always there then how are they expected to change anything since it would presumably mean they were there also later on when they attempt to do whatever they plan on doing (missed that part somehow :-/ ).

Dumbledore knew what he would be telling them to do the entire time!

Ah, so that voice was Hermione? Very cool. It still leaves everybody in the same place they were at before... just now with a duplicate Harry and Hermione. Wait... no. Because when Harry and Hermione go back, the first versions of them double back in the time stream leaving the duplicate version to resume business! It's so simple and obvious now that I think about it. I love time travel.

The silhouette looked like Hermione and Harry were making out. Harry... it's not your dad. It's you.

Damn, it's almost over? Fifteen minutes left. It feels like there's so much more left to show.

That damn tree. They are obsessed with that damn tree in this movie. It's like the "frog" outside of Jabba's Palace but every twenty minutes instead of just once. :-/

I can't help but think that this isn't the last we see of Remus. I wonder if he's let me have those shelves and the skulls inside of them?

What is that kid's name who hangs around the main group and acts as kind of a... more serious Neville? He's the kid that kept causing things to explode in the first movie.

And it ends with Harry getting a new Nimbus. Final thoughts time!

--

I'm not quite sure what to make of this one.

It was fun but I couldn't help but feel it was lacking. The whole thing felt like the first act of three, or something similar. Even as it was wrapping up I didn't even begin to feel like it was ready to end and yet I can't think of any other way it could have wrapped up better. I can't place my finger on it but it just felt... empty.

That said, it was an enjoyable movie and the even slighter edging towards the darker tone was very much appreciated. I think the best way to describe what is keeping me from glowing about it is that the whole experience just didn't feel epic enough. It felt kind of like filler. Necessary filler since it sets up more of the story... okay, mainly Sirius Black but necessary regardless. But still filler. I can't explain it any better.

Also, the complete lack of Voldemort felt weird to me. It really felt like the whole movie was just a way to introduce Sirius Black, which judging by the title doesn't seem unlikely. I can't help but feel his introduction would have been better as part of another movie rather than the focus of an entire film.

Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban
:fullstar: :fullstar: :emptystar: :emptystar: :emptystar: :emptystar:

Originally I gave it three stars, but I changed my mind. I thought about giving it two and a half - but I swore to myself not to use half stars, so two stars it was.

It was a fun movie but I felt it was really lacking in a lot of indescribable ways. Other than the opening and my own personal enjoyment at trying to figure out the time travel aspect and how they were going to avoid a paradox (before they showed it), I didn't find this movie to be particular memorable.

I highly, highly doubt I will ever watch it again.

Apparently my distaste for Prisoner of Azkaban is in the minority from what I can see online.

However, the opinions seem to mostly be of those who read and are big fans of the books - which would undoubtedly give you an entirely different perspective on the films.

It's no different than how I could get a lot of enjoyment out of the Star Wars prequels while it was (and still is) in style to tear them apart. I was deep into the books, games, and all that extra non-film stuff so I had a different perspective on them than people who were just a fan of the movies.

They don't do a good job explaining this in the movies, but there's a good reason why Harry wasn't punished here, even though he gets punished for defending himself in movie 5:

Like I said, Voldemort is the most evil thing in this world. His reign of power was terrible and saw a lot of deaths and torture. Voldemort was basically Hitler and muggles and anyone associate with muggles were the Jews. Voldemort wanted to wipe them all out so that only purebloods remained (even though Voldemort himself wasn't even pureblood...but wasn't Hitler part Jew or something? So the comparison still fits). Voldemort was extremely powerful. Not only does he know more dark magic than any other wizard (except possibly Dumbledore, who knows it but doesn't use it and is the only wizard Voldemort has ever feared), but he has an entire army of fellow wizards and witches, along with Dementors, Giants, werewolves, and various other beasts this world. If Voldemort ever decided he wanted you dead, you were as good as dead. Dumbledore was fighting against Vodlemort with the original Order of the Phoenix, but the OotP is really underground and not really as known or powerful as Voldemort. Basically, everyone knew if Voldemort wanted you dead, you were dead.

Voldemort wanted Harry dead. Voldemort tried to kill Harry. Harry survived. He is the only person to ever survive once Voldemort wanted someone dead. And not only this, but Voldemort completely disappeared when he attacked Harry. So Harry lives and Voldemort's reign of terror is immediately vanished. This immediately makes Harry Potter a figure of hope for the Wizarding community. Like I said, this is why Harry Potter is famous. He is a symbol.

Early in the movie, everyone assumes Sirius Black is Voldemort's right hand man. They all assume that he was going to take over after Voldemort went missing. When Sirius escaped Azkaban, they assumed he was headed straight to Harry Potter and wanted to kill Harry -- maybe for revenge, maybe because Sirius thought killing Harry would somehow bring back Voldemort. They didn't know the reason, they just knew Sirius was going after Harry.

So Fudge was put in a position where his greatest symbol of hope and survival (Harry Potter) was in jeopardy. When Harry ran away, Fudge worried that Sirius may have been near and would have attacked him. (The spell Dumbledore put on Harry keeps him safe in that his enemies cannot find him, but can determine his general location). So when Fudge finds Harry alive and well, his immediate response is relief. If anything would have happened to Harry, it would surely have cost him his own position as Minister of Magic. This is why they do not punish Harry in any way.

It isn't as clear and cut as it may seem in the movies. Dumbledore is the biggest symbol of hope (along with Harry) and the fight against evil, but he knows as much about Dark Magic as Voldemort himself. It is acceptable to have a fascination for Dark Magic, to study Dark Magic, to know Dark Magic, but not to use it against anyone. If nothing else, you could teach others how to defend against it.

Is Peter the rat...?

Peter pettigrew was his human name growing up. He hung out with James Potter, Sirius Black, and Lupin. James and Sirius were best of friends. Lupin was their good friend. Peter was that kid that hangs around the popular kids and is treated like a friend. Lupin becomes a wearwolf, so Sirius, James, and Peter all teach themselves how to morph into animals. Sirirus becomes a big dog and is nicknamed Padfoot. James becomes a Stag and is named Prongs. Lupin is named Moony after his condition. And Peter becomes a rat, and is named Wormtail. Padfoot, Prongs, Moony, and Wormtail are the 4 creators of the Marauder's Map that the Weasley Twins gave Harry.

Very suspicious that Snape is the first on the scene.

Wasn't explained to well in the movie, but when Harry told Lupin that he saw Peter on the map, Lupin immediately figured out what happened with Sirius all those years ago. He knew Sirius was innocent. He started watching the map. He saw Sirius chasing after Peter (when the rat ran way from Ron) and ran towards them. He dropped the map. Snape found the map (again) and saw Sirius on the map. Snape, who has a huge grudge against Sirius that you'll learn more about in movie 5, wanted to be the one to catch Sirius. So Snape goes to get him.

That's because it really isn't the end. Like I said earlier, the series really entwines in itself starting with this movie. Things you saw in this movie have major importance in later movies. Don't think of it as "oh, the movie went off and left a lot unaccounted for". Think of it as a bigger story that you were just told a little bit of. You have a lot more story to learn. :)

If you like the daker tones, you are going to definitely like the rest of the series. The series grows darker and darker in tone as each movie is released.

That's basically right. This book/movie really was filler information. It gave you a lot of information that will be important later in the series.

I'm disappointed seeing that you have POA such a low score. As you said, it does have a lot of love in the series and is considered by many to be the best. But then I thought back to my own opinions and remember thinking the exact same thing the first time read the book. I remember thinking it was just filler. I remember being disappointed that Voldemort was nowhere in this story. But after I read the entire series, then I had a much different opinion of POA. It's still filler, by and large. But there is a lot of important stuff going on here.

So, yeah, I'm really interested to see if you stick with this score after you've seen all the movies or if your opinion will change in retrospect, like mine did.

I didn't even think about that since obviously not everybody speaks english.

That was extremely difficult to make out. I thought about searching for it online, but I thought that might taint the play-by-play aspect of it.

Later on when I took a few more guesses as to what the name was, I rewound a scene with Hermione (I think it was) saying it's name at least three times just trying to figure out what it was. I eventually made out the "beak" part, but that was about it.

So, yeah, I'm really interested to see if you stick with this score after you've seen all the movies or if your opinion will change in retrospect, like mine did.

I don't know. It just felt like it's a supplemental to the series and not really a vital part. I came away from it feeling like all that really changed was Sirius Black was introduced and explained and little else. I don't really care for the Sirius Black character from what little I know and have seen of him, so that left me feeling very flat.

I might be able to better appreciate what the movie sets up as I get deeper into the films, but I doubt I'll care much for the movie itself.

I keep using Star Wars as an example, but it's the most appropriate to use... but it's kind of like how I appreciate what Episode I does with introducing Anakin, explaining how Obi-Wan became his mentor, planting the early seeds for Sidious' rise to power etc but I really do not care for the movie itself (even as a fan of the prequels I don't like Episode I  ).

I think it might wind up as a similar situation when it's all said and done.

Shit...I don't want to explain it just yet. I think it'll be better if you see it on your own for yourself, but will gladly explain why Sirius is a good character after movie 5.

But from this one movie alone, you can start to see why Sirius becomes important to Harry. You hate the Dursleys just like Harry does. You want nothing to do with them, just like Harry wants nothing to do with them. You were glad to see Harry fight back (do you see why they are so horrible now? So that you are feeling everything Harry is feeling and identify with Harry there? ).

During the walk back from the Shrieking Shack to Hogwarts, Sirius tells Harry that he is his godfather and that once he is free Harry is free to come live with him, if he wishes. Harry just met Sirius and he immediately jumps at the idea to live with Sirius. Just to get away from the Dursleys. Obviously, that didn't work out. But that's an early foundation for what the Sirius character will become.

Also, the Dursleys will not be in the next movie. :tu:

Would it be too early to give The Goblet of Fire six stars based on this alone? :shifty:

If you don't mind mild spoilers, here are when/where the Dursley's pop up in the remainder of the movies:

Goblet of Fire is a go!

Feels like the opening WB logo for a 90s Batman movie.

Is that the snake from the first film? It looks like it's in the muggle world... or not. Old dude is about to regret leaving his home like whoa. Oh shit, he came down with a quick case of the death. I'm glad to see people actually die in this series. I already knew Edward from Twilight dies, but I thought his was going to be the only one until the final two movies.

Speaking of Edward, there he is. Cedric is it? I'll try to remember that, Edward. Glad to see he wasn't sparkling in sunlight yet. Ah, I remember this transporting thing. This is the movie Cedric dies in, isn't it?

God damn it... Quidditch? Don't tempt me. Waitwaitwait... doesn't something happen here in a second? Something chaotic with people screaming and all that? Vague memories coming back to me somewhat. Harry looks like a young John Lennon in this movie. :-/

If this Quidditch stuff doesn't end soon, then I'm going to skip ahead until it's clear. Oh man, so relieved right now... Here's that chaos I was talking about! Are these people what you would get if you mixed the Black Panthers and the KKK together and gave them magic?

There must be a lot of dead bodies we're not seeing or something if they torched all of the camping site but skipped over Harry who was just laying there.

Foreign candy names always sound so weird to me. Real or imaginary.

Now that would be a scary ride being in that flying wagon, bouncing around like a mother fucker. Holy shit, that boat is awesome. I want one!

And Harry is the fourth, which shocks everybody or whatever, right? Since there's only supposed to be three... You'd think people would be used to Harry being included in everything already. Hot girls (and a perfect one for Hagrid) but WTF is with the goofy entrances?

Oh yeah, that guy with the eye isn't suspicious at all. Alistair Moody is it?

A lot of bugs and spider like things in these movies. That eye is extremely distracting. Now I am extremely interested in finding out how Harry survived the killing curse. I hope it gets explained.

Hmm. What does Moody have to show Neville? Neville is really distraught so like... is it a resurrect spell or something?

What if Einstein was a caveman and a twin?

Victor gets picked first. I'm so shocked. Cute, but don't know her. Cedric... even bigger shocker than Victor. :busy: How and why was Harry chosen? Somebody must have put his name in there. Was it Moody? Snape? Oh shit... was that jealousy in Ron's eyes? That could be interesting. Very interesting...

You know, I can't remember what happens to or with Moody but I really hope he doesn't end up as a villain or directly involved with the villain. I'm getting tired of the whole "new teacher is new major villain/hero character" angle.

Damn. Very cute girl. Straight up beautiful even. She looks a lot better here than she did. Was I the only one that sensed a weird kind of sexual tension between that reporter and Harry, even though he's 14? She's got that horny middle school teacher vibe about her.

Is that really Black that sent him the message? Are you Sirius, bro? Guess so... Sirius is looking really hot here. Ha!

Oh, Hagrid has himself a crush. Dragons. Looks straight out of Dragonheart. Let me guess, Harry is gonna get matched up with or struggle against the strongest dragon?

What exactly is Harry's problem? And why is Malfoy just hanging out in a tree? Ha! I like this Moody guy, even if I'm almost willing to bet money that he turns heel.

Victor looks a lot like a guy I used to work with, only not less... Mexican. He was the Pepsi vendor.

Gee, what a surprise. Potter gets the toughest one. I didn't see that coming. :busy:

Where's all the hate? Everybody was all on board the "Harry Stinks" train bu now that they're at the show, they cheer him? I think I kind of remember what happens. Something about the dragon breaking free and Harry flying around the castle? Ha... yep. I thought Harry was allowed to bring in his broom? He said it himself. :-/ BTW, I know it's nitpicking and they use brooms because people associate that with witches and wizards but... I'm surprised these people don't just fly around with some kind of spell. Maybe it's really high level and obscure or something.

Aw, Harry and Ron are gonna make up. But hopefully not make out. I don't think I could get my pants off quick enou...er... apple pie. I sure do love apple pie.

I kind of zoned out there and missed all the dialogue after Ron's first line.

I literally lol'd at Harry's attempt to smile with a mouthful of drink. Oh hey... I remember the ball coming up, with Hermione all looking like a super lady and all that. I would rather fight Voldemort armed with a spoon than go to a dance. :uhoh:

I know a woman who is taller than me like that lady is taller than Hagrid. I'm 5'10", so she must be like 6'2" or 6'3" or something. It's crazy.

Ooh, my. That black girl is fucking gorgeous. Nice pick... whichever one of the twins you are. And smooth Ron, smooth. He reminds me of me too much of the time.

Are those girls supposed to be twins because... I'm not buying it. Nah, they must just be regular sisters.

What the...

If I had been paying as much attention as I am this time through, it would have been painfully obvious that Ron and Hermione would end up together in the end. And god Ron is reminding me of myself when I was at my worst with a girl I was crazy about... Very uncomfortable. :-/ Heh. Hagrid.

Ooh, I remember this. Myrtle incoming I believe. Yep. Thought so. She's hilarious. Can Myrtle leave the bathroom or is she bound to that room forever?

Neville is in this movie a lot. And Ginny is growing on me. She seems cool from what we're seeing so far. Like a more... stable version of Hermione.

I really should learn how to swim some day. Really, Harry? Was that necessary?

Are these going to be dangerous mermaids? I've learned to expect them to be dangerous nowadays since it's the fashionable thing now it seems.

Oooh, I see why whats her name needed to see Ron and Hermione now. Who is that other girl and what happens if Harry decided not to go out of his way to grab her too?

This guy is extremely suspicious. And now he's dead. Moody's fault?

It is extremely hard to mess around online and watch this at the same time. I have to keep rewinding it. Harry is falling now. Not sure what this is about but... guess Harry isn't supposed to be seen. Is this a flashback? Wait a minute... is that guy in the bars the guy who is leading the Bulgarians? Hmm... Some information about Snape. Ahh... now I see why Crouch acted so weird now.

I can't help but wonder if some day Harry will replace Dumbledore as headmaster of Hogwarts. Much in the same way Luke replaced Yoda in the New Jedi Order.

Ah, the Bulgarian teacher was that prisoner. I have no idea what Snape was going on about just now other than he seems to have mistakenly assumed Harry is responsible.

The song they're playing sounds like something you would have heard in an old school NES game. Mr. Diggory. You have seen your last sunrise.

WTF is with Victor's eyes? I know Dumbledore said people can lose themselves but is that whats happening? What exactly was the point of that, Potter? Ah, yep. Victor has lost his mind.

Riddle. Here we go... Adios Cedric. And now Voldemort has no nose. Why did he have one before in the first movie but not now? That said, why does he not have a nose or hair anyway? And.... and..... AND..... AND(!) VOLDEMORT IS BACK MOTHERFUCKERS! Death Eaters. I know so little about them.

You know, knowing who played him, I can't help but see that psychopath Nazi from Schindler's List every time Voldemort is on the screen. It's distracting, I have to say. What is happening right now with these spirits exactly?

Long shot of Neville. Very odd the amount of attention he's been given. I like Neville, so I'm not complaining. I'm just saying... very odd.

I'm also realizing right now that I saw Order of the Phoenix, too, because I remember partially what happens (just with the nasty replacement head mistress, mostly and that one odd blonde girl that I remember liking). I saw a lot more of these films than I originally had thought.

Ooh... snap. Moody's heel turn begins. Moody was the one that put Potter's name in there wasn't he... and now Harry is saying it. Ah, and I understand what Snape was going on about now, too. Is this wormtail maybe? Or...? Oh shit... of course! The one guy who has been missing since the beginning, Crouch Jr.! I didn't even think of him. At least it's nice to see that the teacher given focus wasn't once again the big bad or hero in hiding. Refreshing swerve.

I have to say that this Dumbledore has grown on me through this film. In the last, he felt... really off compared to the first two movies. I think he's really starting to come into his own now.

I've said it before, but I'm so happy most of the main cast was able to keep returning to their roles with each installment. It makes the whole journey feel so much more meaningful. I can't help but think that these films wouldn't feel the same if one of my favorite characters were to have been replaced, especially if one of the main three would have been replaced.

That said, the film is over and it's time for the brief review.

--

I can't help but feel that this movie really pushed the whole story along by a massive leap forward. The last film felt like some bloated way to introduce Sirius, which is a character I don't even care for much so far anyway, while this one not only helped re-establish Voldemort as a threat - and a greater one than he's been in the films so far - but that forces that conspire against Harry are everywhere and they really mean business. It also helped to show that while Dumbledore is undoubtedly one of the strongest wizards, that doesn't mean Harry is perfectly safe with him around. Some evil can still find ways to get to him even under Dumbledore's watchful eye.

While I can't really think of a lot that happened in this movie other than re-establishing the main big bad and the relationship dynamics of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, the entire experience left me feeling much more fulfilled than the last and it has me very much interested in what is to come.

Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire
:fullstar: :fullstar: :fullstar: :halfstar: :emptystar: :emptystar:

I had to go back on my own private word about half stars for this one. I feel it was better than three but not quite up to four.

First, a funny image I saw online that is Harry Potter related:

Harry Potter condoms

Ok, onto your review:

Quote:

Is that the snake from the first film?

Yup. I didn't even realize it until the author pointed it out. But the snake that Harry accidentally freed in the first movie becomes his enemy and is even responsible for killing...well, you'll just have to wait and see, won't you?

Quote:

Oh shit, he came down with a quick case of the death. I'm glad to see people actually die in this series. I already knew Edward from Twilight dies, but I thought his was going to be the only one until the final two movies.

Oh, no. Like I said previously, the series really grows up with Harry. This could be a spoiler, so read it at your own discretion but at least 1 character will die in each movie from now on.

Quote:

Here's that chaos I was talking about! Are these people what you would get if you mixed the Black Panthers and the KKK together and gave them magic?

Those are the Death Eaters...Voldemort's followers. And I absolutely hated how they were dressed in this movie. Those ugly cones they wore on their heads were terrible. They look much better in future movies.

Quote:

but WTF is with the goofy entrances?

It's for the movie. They had better entrances in the book. Oh, and in the movie the French school is all girls and the Russian school is all boys. that was just for the movie too, since the schools were coed in the books.

Quote:

What does Moody have to show Neville? Neville is really distraught so like... is it a resurrect spell or something?

You are talking about after class, right? He ends up giving Neville a book on magical plants. This is fake Moody's way of helping Harry without being obvious. He expects Harry to ask everyone he knows for help in the Triwizard Tournament, so he gives Neville the book that will tell Harry how to breathe underwater.

Quote:

I'm getting tired of the whole "new teacher is new major villain/hero character" angle.

Ugh, I just typed a big paragraph about the remaining movies and this storyline, but I didn't want to spoil the movies for you and deleted it. :-/

I thought the same thing in the movie. I thought she was trying to make out with him at first.

Quote:

And why is Malfoy just hanging out in a tree? Ha! I like this Moody guy, even if I'm almost willing to bet money that he turns heel.

So did you get your question answered from earlier when you asked what happens when a human gets transformed into an animal? They actually become the animal, and they hinted that it was painful forMalfoy.

Quote:

I think I kind of remember what happens. Something about the dragon breaking free and Harry flying around the castle?

That doesn't happen in the book. I get why they did it for the movie, since it was more visually pretty. But you got to think that everyone in the audience would have been bored out of their minds. They sat at the stadium the entire time not seeing anything until Harry returned. And for that matter, the second and third tasks had to be boring for them as well since they couldn't see underwater for the second task or in the maze for the third task. Why were the spectators even there?

Quote:

I'm surprised these people don't just fly around with some kind of spell. Maybe it's really high level and obscure or something.

Hold onto that thought.

Quote:

And smooth Ron, smooth.

Hermione...you're a girl!

Quote:

Can Myrtle leave the bathroom or is she bound to that room forever?

She can leave the bathroom. She does leave the bathroom to go swimming in the great lake (second task area). But she chooses to haunt the toilet where she died.

Quote:

Neville is in this movie a lot.

Yeah, he stole A LOT of Dobby's stuff in this movie (and the next movie!). In this movie, Neville tells Harry to use Gillyweed. In the book, Dobby steals Gillyweed from Snape and gives it to Harry.

Quote:

I've learned to expect them to be dangerous nowadays since it's the fashionable thing now it seems.

The mermaids in Harry Potter's world act threatening, but have no magic and are terrified of magic. So they'd try to bully you, but would retreat as soon as they saw you knew magic.

Quote:

Who is that other girl and what happens if Harry decided not to go out of his way to grab her too?

Fleur's sister. Nothing would have happened if Harry didn't save her. Dumbledore was the one that put all 4 under a spell to put them underwater. After the task, Dumbledore would have gotten her back and woke her up.

Quote:

Not sure what this is about but... guess Harry isn't supposed to be seen. Is this a flashback?

Harry fell into a memory. He wasnt' seen by anyone because he's not part of the memory. This isn't the only time you'll see Harry go into memories.

Quote:

I can't help but wonder if some day Harry will replace Dumbledore as headmaster of Hogwarts. Much in the same way Luke replaced Yoda in the New Jedi Order.

Nope. Neville does become a Hogwarts teacher though.

Quote:

I have no idea what Snape was going on about just now other than he seems to have mistakenly assumed Harry is responsible.

The gillyweed that Harry used in the second task was stolen from Snape. Since Dobby was cut out of this movie, we never saw who stole it. I'd assume Neville stole it for Harry. Either way, Snape thinks Harry stole it.

Quote:

WTF is with Victor's eyes? I know Dumbledore said people can lose themselves but is that whats happening? What exactly was the point of that, Potter? Ah, yep. Victor has lost his mind.

Remember when Moody was showing the class those 3 spells with the spiders? Remember the spell he used to make the spider do whatever he wanted? Moody had put the same spell on Krum while he was in the Maze. Moody was controlling Krum and making Krum attack anyone but Harry.

Quote:

That said, why does he not have a nose or hair anyway?

Voldemort split his soul to create Horcruxes, thus making himself immortal as long as those Horcruxes are not destroyed. Every time he split his soul, he became more and more deformed. Remember how I told you speaking to snakes is a sign of a evil wizard? Part of this is because Voldemort took on such a snake-like appearance as he became more and more disfigured from creating more and more Horcruxes. How many did he create? You'll see.

Quote:

I can't help but see that psychopath Nazi from Schindler's List every time Voldemort is on the screen.

If you can get yourself a copy of it, watch the special version of Death Hollows that they released. It was kind of like a "making of" but not really. It was the regular movie, but then it would cut to show different cool things about the movie. They often showed Voldemort acting without being altered. They alter him with computers, so he looks normal as they are recording him (except for the white face/head paint). You may think he looks weird without a nose, but wait until you see him with a nose!

Quote:

What is happening right now with these spirits exactly?

Remember back to the first movie, remember when Ollivander told Harry that the phoenix that gave a feather for Harry's wand gave jsut one other feather? That feather was in Voldemort's wand (and the Phoenix is Dumbledore's phoenix, which we saw in the second movie). So Harry and Voldemort's wands are brother wands. They will not fight against each other. When they fought, they connected. There was a little bead where the two connected. At first it was pushing towards Harry, but then it pushed towards Voldemort. When that bead connected with Voldemort's wand, it reversed the last few spells Voldemort's wand had done. He killed Cedric, he killed that guy at the beginning of the movie, and he killed Harry's parents. They came back out...well, not them exactly. Less than a ghost version of them, mostly smoke. Only Harry and Voldemort could see them. They protected Harry temporarily to help him get away.

I think you'll like the Order of the Phoenix. It is another movie/book that gets great reviews and is considered a favorite by many. I especially look forward to reading your opinion on (major spoiler, read after you watch) the big duel between Voldemort and Dumbledore, and your reaction to Voldemort possessing Harry to try to get Dumbledore to attack Harry just to get to Voldemort

Glad to see your scores go back up. This is one of my favorite books of the series. And the fact that they literally only showed about 1/3 of the story in this movie makes me kind of not like the movie as much as people that didn't see it. I mean, I think the movie is choppy at times and leave a lot unexplained, but most people that only watched the movie liked it. So I dunno.

Bulgarian, not Russian. Whoa... I just... I just corrected you on something Harry Potter. :uhoh:

The whole concept that both schools were boys only and girls only schools kind of annoyed me. It felt kind of gimmicky as if it was only used so they could exaggerate the whole entrance and team aura aspect of each, with the French being super lady like and the Bulgarians being these hyper aggressive testosterone fueled pseudo-thugs.

Yes, it was after the class. That makes sense.

Kind of.

I was more confused as to what happens when somebody is turned into an inanimate object, though. For example say I was to turn you into a desk somehow, how would you perceive things? Would you be conscious? Would you be able to take in any outside stimuli? Stuff like that. It came to mind when they were turning animals into chalices or whatever in the last movie (or two movies ago?).

I wonder similar things for when people are petrified. Do they black out or still remain completely aware but simply unable to do anything?

I was thinking the same thing, at least during the dragon battle with Harry.

At least in Star Wars when everybody is off for 99% of the race in areas where the spectators can't see, they have screens to watch. The students and faculty have nothing. You'd think they'd have some sort of viewing system set-up, especially when almost all of the action takes place out of normal view and is extremely dangerous. It seems like the kind of thing you'd want to keep your eye on.

Then again, they somehow knew exactly what Harry was doing when he was under water. When they announced winners, they somehow knew Harry had reached the kids first but only fell behind because he tried to save as many as he could rather than one. There must be some kind of system for viewing set up and maybe some kind of commentary for those who can't see?

Quote:

That makes sense since when they were all swarming him and he let Ron and the french girl float to the surface, he knocked them off with his wand and they got the hell out of there in a hurry.

Yeah, I figured that out when I realized Crouch Senior was alive in the scene.

I could definitely see Neville being a teacher. A kind of bumbling botanist or something like that.

I'm very surprised Harry doesn't do something, though. You'd think that one of the most naturally gifted wizards would want to do more than just live a normal life when it's all done. Maybe live a normal life combined with passing on his knowledge and training future wizards.

They really should have clarified that it was stolen if that was the case, then. Maybe they intended on it but it just didn't work with the flow of the movie? I know the scene where Snape confronts Harry about it seemed very jarring and out of place.

Ah, I see. I had completely forgotten about that control spell. All I remembered about it was Moody trying to get Neville or Hermione to do something about it. Kill it I assumed, even though I thought using the killing spell was strictly forbidden for some reason.

I had forgotten that Voldemort and Harry's wands were connected (that was a lot of information ago  ) but at least that makes sense now. So did Voldemort possess their spirits still or something then? Because they were still dead... so it's not like the damage was truly undone.

Most of the non-spoilered reviews I read were from people that were avid fans of the books and they seemed to dislike this movie the most out of them all (this and the second film, it seems). So when I realized that I was really enjoying it while really disliking the former (which is one of the more popular ones amongst fans of the book it seems) I couldn't help but laugh.

It's clear that my disinterest and unfamiliarity with the books will result in a much different opinion than those who are the opposite with the books. Who knows, maybe my opinion would change if I read the books, too.

Or perhaps I would find myself disliking the books because from my point of view, the films are how Harry's story is supposed to be. The books would be the foreign new thing changing it all around and meddling with things I don't want meddled with.

Same difference. I mean, they are only like half a content away. That's nothing or wizards. They can apparate.

Speaking of which, you've now seen pretty much all the forms of travel:

1) Broom
2) Floo Network (Fireplaces)
3) Portkey (that thing they touch and it spins them to a location)
4) Apparating (disappearing into thin air and reappearing elsewhere)

Apparation is the best way, obviously, but you have to be of age, you must pass a test, and it is dangerous since you can splinch yourself (leave parts of your body behind).

You will get your answer in movie 6.

It really isn't described in the book too well, but it'd basically be similar to being in a coma. You aren't aware of your surroundings. You don't register/remember anything said to you or done to you, and you don't feel anything.

They did not explain this in the movie -- which is one of the reasons why I think it is so damn choppy and leaves a lot unexplained -- but Dumbledore speaks Mermish and spoke with the Mermaids. The Mermaids told Dumbledore everything that happened. He then called a meeting with the other judges (which did make the movie) and then the points were awarded.

They also do not show all the judges. You have the head of all the schools (Dumbledore, Madame Maxime, Igor Karkaroff), but you also have 2 people from the Ministry of Magic. We had Barty Crouch (who was shown) and Ludo Bagman (who was never shown). So five judges.

None of them were told anything before the second task. The song said they had 1 hour to retrieve what was lost or it would forever be lost, or something like that. Harry (and Fleur) took it literal. That's why Harry saves both Ron and Fleur's sister. If Harry hadn't have saved Fleur's sister, he would have came in first since he got there before anyone else. Harry does later realize (after the task) that Dumbledore would never have allowed anything to happen to them if he failed. I think Hermione or even Ron was the one that pointed it out to him.

A kind of bumbling botanist or something like that.

Ha! That's exactly what he becomes! Well, I don't know if the bumbling part is true, but we can assume so based on his character as we know him. But he does replace Professor Sprout as the plant teacher of the school.

I'm very surprised Harry doesn't do something, though. You'd think that one of the most naturally gifted wizards would want to do more than just live a normal life when it's all done. Maybe live a normal life combined with passing on his knowledge and training future wizards.

You are going to find out Harry's career aspirations in the next movie. And it can be argued that Harry isn't "naturally" gifted, but I'll wait to go into that.

They really should have clarified that it was stolen if that was the case, then. Maybe they intended on it but it just didn't work with the flow of the movie? I know the scene where Snape confronts Harry about it seemed very jarring and out of place.

Another example of why I think the movie comes off as choppy and lacking in information. But this seems to be the only thing that really stood out to you, so I guess if you don't know you're missing a lot of stuff then you don't notice it.

Ah, I see. I had completely forgotten about that control spell. All I remembered about it was Moody trying to get Neville or Hermione to do something about it. Kill it I assumed, even though I thought using the killing spell was strictly forbidden for some reason.

Moody was showing them the 3 Unforgivable Curses. These are 3 curses that Voldemort (and his followers) made famous during Voldemort's first reign of terror. If you are caught using any of these spells on a human being, it is an automatic sentence to Azkaban. The three curses are:

1) The Imperius Curse - This curse lets you control another person without that person having any real knowledge of it or any control over what he's doing. Moody actually practices this curse on the students so each student will know what it feels like and try to fight against it. Harry was one of the few people that could fight against it. When it was put on Harry, Harry described it as a feeling of complete inner peace, like he didn't have to think or be aware of his surroundings. When he started fighting it, he had an inner dialog with himself. Moody was telling him to do something (jump on a desk) and he heard a voice in the back of his head telling him no. So he fought it in mid jump and ended up breaking his kneecaps.

2) The Cruciatus Curse - This is the torture curse and is suppose to be the most pain you can possibly imagine. It feels like thousands of sharp needles are being pressed in you, like all your bones are breaking, like your insides are contracting/exploding. Neville has a good reason for reacting the way he did when he saw this curse. You'll find out in the next movie.

3) Avada Kedavra (The Killing Curse). This kills people, simple as that. It's signified by a flash of green light and is instant and irreversible death. Only one person has ever survived it: Harry Potter.

Quote:

So did Voldemort possess their spirits still or something then? Because they were still dead... so it's not like the damage was truly undone.

No, Voldemort didn't posses them. It's hard to explain since I forget how the book explains it. Basically, it's like they are ghosts (Myrtle, Nearly headless nick), but they are less than that. They are the spirits of the people, but are only seen by Harry and Voldemort. Voldemort did not expect this and was freaked out. They couldn't hurt Voldemort, couldn't do anything to him. But it was a moment that truly surprised him and he lost his wits for a few moments, which allowed Harry to get away.

You'll see this kind of re-carnation of dead people again in the last movie.

Or perhaps I would find myself disliking the books because from my point of view, the films are how Harry's story is supposed to be. The books would be the foreign new thing changing it all around and meddling with things I don't want meddled with.

I had seen the first 5 movies before I read any of the books. I was only watching them casually at that time. I had seen the first two when they were on DVD, then watched each new DVD as they were released. When I got the books, I thought the first two were pretty much the same as the movies, a few differences but nothing major Book 3 saw many more changes. Goblet of Fire had about 2/3 more information. After reading the book, I understood so much of what was going on so much better than I ever did when watching the movies. I was like "oh, ok, so that's what happened there and that's why that happened there and...what the hell? Why did they leave out all of this!!!".

I figured as much since after Moody took him aside after class Neville started seeming extremely interested in botany. He was more excited about that than anything else except for perhaps dancing when he talked to Harry the night before the second challenge.

I remembered that part, but I wasn't sure what was going on. I thought maybe he was putting that bug in to a state of pain to try and encourage Neville (and then Hermione) to put it out of it's misery.

I could understand this happening.

I've mentioned Star Wars a lot in here because it's the closest to this I can think of and identify with (many movies in the series, very popular, complicated universe that can give a viewer a deeper look when they go further than just casual viewing, etc). But your experience with the movies reminds me of my experience that started back around 2005 when I started to explore some of the stuff outside of the Star Wars movies and suddenly a lot of stuff started making sense, which increased my interest an incredible amount.

Although discovering Wookiepedia helped out a lot, too.

I was thinking about checking out the Harry Potter Wiki after I'm done with the movies and if I'm not burned out on Harry Potter by then. I might come to understand some things I never knew before.

Speaking of burned out, I don't think I'll have to worry quite yet because I plan on watching The Order of the Phoenix later tonight (about the same time) and then probably taking the next two nights off since I return to work tomorrow. I plan on resuming with the final three, the three I know I haven't seen (although I have a sneaking suspicion I might have seen the end battle in it), on thursday.

Those last three will be the most interesting ones since they'll be the most unknown and fresh. I know a very small number of plot points, mainly the ultimate end result and that business with Dumbledore (which I know because of the pranks online when the book came out  ). So it'll be interesting, for sure.

...broke his kneecaps

fffffffffffffff

Yeah, but this is Hogwarts. Whereas you saw Lockhart to be a bumbling fool when he tried to fix Harry's arm, Madam Pomfrey is quite a good healer. She would have had both his kneecaps completely healed in less than 30 seconds. :)

You also saw Voldemort put the torture curse on Harry when they were dueling. You'll see it in the next movie as well.

I'm interested in your reaction to this movie. The first time I read the book and the first time I watched the movie, I didn't really like either. The tone is very...yeah, I don't want to spoil it. I had to read the book two or three times to really appreciate it. Now it is one of my favorites. I really like that one scene at the end that I oranged out above and am curious to see how you react to it as well.

Book 6/Movie 6 was my absolute least favorite of the series for the longest time. I now appreciate it, but have absolutely no problem skipping over it when I do watch several movies in a row, but I do not hate it as much as I used to. Now, it ranks higher than the first 2 movies, but still below the others. So it's my third least favorite. Purple Marauder said it was his favorite one at that point. I'm not sure if his opinion has changed with the last 2 movies, or even if he's seen the last 2 movies. I will say something very important happens at the end, which you may already know about.

Movie 7 is really good in that it follows the book closer than any movie other than the first 2. They change very little, actually. But it can be a little uneventful at times. It sets up a lot for the last movie.

Movie 8 is my favorite movie of the series, I think. They did change several key things, but I didn't think it did any harm to the story so it didn't bother me. But it was a very good ending to the series. It put everything to rest, answered all the questions. I don't actually own this movie. I did buy the complete series on Blu Ray, but one of the discs skipped so I took them back. I haven't bought a new one to replace this movie. So I've only seen this movie twice. My opinion may change with more viewings, but right now this is my favorite movie. :)

Goblet of Fire gets 3.5/6 stars from you? WTF?

IDK, that film would have been really weak without the tournament. Because the Voldemort scenes were pretty anticlimactic and the romance stuff was cheesily executed. I think they should have kept Cuarón instead of using Mike Newell for GOF.

Yet, the GOF book is one of my favorites.

Watching Voldemort regenerate was pretty damn awesome. This has nothing to do with anything said, but I just wanted to make it clear.

I really like the Lego Harry Potter games. You should play them if you haven't. I believe they are on all current consoles. The only movie game I played was OotP, and didn't like it too much.

Seems appropriate to quote myself here.

It definitely would have been weak without the tournament, but that's really only because the tournament is laced throughout the entire film and most of what happened was directly related to it. Without it it would be a twenty minute long movie that would pretty much be the opening and Voldemort's growth.

I think the Voldemort scenes, specifically the last one where he confronts Harry, was not only a great proper debut for a villain that has been built up for four movies but also a great way to show that defeating Harry isn't going to be as easy for Voldemort as he wanted to believe.

I hate when people say GOF would have been weak without the tournament like it is some kind of big revelation or something. Of course it would be weak without the tournament. The movie was built around the tournament. If you take the central plot out of the movie, yup, it's weak.

Order of the Phoenix time.

My copy is crazy jerky right now. Hopefully that ends soon.

Is that his cousin again? He looks like him. I'm loving this right now. The whole "holy shit" feeling that came over all the bullies. I love dark magic so much.

I thought he had already moved out. Hrm. They seem much less cartoonish so far, but it's nice to see that they have learned to fear magic a little more.

Who is she? Besides a hottie that is. The "don't call me Nymphadora" girl.

Thought he was Dobby for a second. How do Ron and Hermione always end up wherever Harry finds himself?

Has Mr. Weasley not been in the muggle world for awhile or something? I would have thought he'd at least know what a subway is. :-/

I forgot that the Dementors were agents of the Ministry of Magic. I can't remember that lady's name, but I already can't wait until the end when she's taken care of.

There's the hottie again. I do like the purple hair.

The dreams thing is going to get old if the whole movie is spent going in and out of them like this.

Neville and something that looks very cool... that only myself and Harry can see, apparently. Hmm. Interesting. Hey, hey! That blonde girl. Luna, eh? I remember her vaguely and I remember thinking she's really cool, if a bit odd.

If there's a lack of commentary, by the way, it's because I've also got less questions as I begin to better understand this world.

"Progress for the sake of progress must be discouraged"? I have a feeling that is the mentality of a really large percentage of Americans... I already can't wait to see her demise. I want it so bad. She is a phenomenal heel. I can't even begin to like her. I want to reach through the screen and strangle her.

Hermione is going to be a naggy wife someday, isn't she?

Changes are afoot. You know, even if I hadn't seen any of this before, the whole takeover by a Voldemort loyal henchman would be painfully obvious. It's making it very slow because I know what she's doing and I just want her to get it over with.

The Weasley twins have absolutely awful handwriting.

Ooh... Ginny with a jealous look when Hermione put over Cho. Blink and you'd miss it.

Superfriends doing their super thing. Every thing Luna says sounds so gentle.

Ginny and Harry are going to have some powerful ass kids some day. Also, hilarious that when Neville does something right everybody goes all ABC Family with him.

Eh, Cho part. I really don't care for this romance or her. Quick envious Ginny look. I never noticed those looks she does in these movies until this run through. The knowledge of their future hook-up definitely has me paying attention to her more this time around.

Hopefully this help from Snape will mean the end of his dreams.

Wait a minute... doesn't this lead to Harry seeing inside of Snape's mind and seeing the memories of him being bullied by James? Not yet I guess.

I swear there are more Weasley's every time I see them.

That's hilarious. Most of the paintings look the same except when they show whatsherface who will be debuting soon, and her's looks extremely detailed in comparison.

I just realized I totally and completely missed Mr. Weasley being attacked. I didn't even realize he was hurt, so I was confused by the last scene.

The muggle Prime Minister knows about this world? Interesting. I thought the government would be as clueless about this realm as most muggles.

Okay wait... time out. How did Harry suddenly become skilled enough to teach all the other students? He's barely managed to scratch by so far in the films, only learning a handful of spells on camera that the other kids haven't already been taught.

Dumbledore has style, indeed. Haha.

Where are the people in those paintings falling off to?!

Hagrid's brother? Uhh...

Whoa wait what. That was a sudden transition. Here comes the part I was expecting earlier.

Off to save the boring Sirius Black. Every time Sirius comes on screen I feel my interest slowly drain away.

Oh my. Centaur time. Panic, deary. Panic. I am very happy now. Very happy indeed. I hope she goes out like Mr. Hands.

It has his name on it? Where?

Does Draco know that his father is a Death Eater?

Stupefy! Stupefy! Stupefy! Stupefy!

I vaguely remember this area, so I know I've seen the ending then. But I'm not sure what happens although I think something with Black.

I had always thought that Lucius Malfoy was a much bigger part of the movies than he's turned out to be.

I know I should be a lot more into this fight than I am. "Nice one, James"? And Sirius is dead. I should be sad... but I don't care. Good riddance to a boring character, I say.

I feel your anger.

Ah, Lifetime moment. Love and friendship are over rated concepts.

"He's back!" Congratulations, genius. See what happens when you discount what people are saying simply because you don't want to believe something? I'd rather that headline for Umbridge say her body was found in the woods, but I guess we can't get what we always want.

Voldemort doesn't have anything to fight for? Uh... no. Try world domination.

And another one is over. Quick review time!

--

I wasn't much of a fan of this one, I'm afraid. It was great for showing how dangerous and intense it's getting in the war against Voldemort, but I felt not much else very worthwhile was done or shown.

I honestly hated Umbridge in the worst way and it was enough that I just wanted all of her time at Hogwarts over with instead of them dragging it out and making it worse and worse. I get why, but it didn't make it anymore enjoyable. She was a great villain but maybe too good.

The movie felt like it was jumping all over the place. A lot of it was the whole dreaming aspect of it and venturing into thoughts, but there was also just a lot of bad edits in the movie where scenes transitioned out of nowhere and left me wondering what just happened. It made following along with an already more complicated story even more complicated.

I honestly could not care any less for Sirius Black so their attempts at making me feel for him or Harry when he was in trouble or died did nothing for me. If anything, while Harry and everybody was in dramatic slow motion reacting to Black's death, I was relieved that he was gone finally. He was such a lackluster character. It's not even just that I found his personality to be boring but that I have been given almost no reason to really feel any attachment to him during these films. He just feels like some half-assed last minute character when somebody thought to themselves "oh, do you know what might be interesting? If it turns out Harry has more family!" Good riddance.

The scenes with Harry mentoring the students, more or less, seemed hokey and raised questions about what makes him so qualified to teach them. The boy can barely get out of each encounter alive, almost always because somebody else saves him. Unless he's been doing a lot of extra studying in his off-hours, it really doesn't make a lot of sense for him to take the role of leader other than "it's Harry! He's the perfect one!". Hermione would have been a better leader since she's the one who is actually more knowledgeable about spells and encantations.

Honestly, my favorite parts were the moments when Ginny would hint at her interest in Harry that were extremely easy to miss if you weren't looking for them. I also really liked the super dark atmosphere of the movie but I found myself missing the usual Hogwarts hijinks more than I thought I might.

Regardless, I found this one very disappointing.

Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix
:fullstar: :fullstar: :emptystar: :emptystar: :emptystar: :emptystar:

I was almost tempted to drop it down one half star, but felt that might be a hair too harsh since I didn't hate it exactly, I just really didn't care for it.

Well... it is a movie about teenagers. They tend to be pretty hormone controlled.

Not to mention it's a series that has the main characters aged at about what the age of the average movie attendee was during it all. So a huge chunk of the audience probably fully related to the tone.

This is explained in detail during the first chapter of the Half-Blood Prince book.

As for you saying Sirius is boring, you'll need to read Prisoner of Azkaban to understand Sirius very well.

I see your point. But the GOF film in particular is the most hormone-induced of all the Potter films.
