That's kind of what I thought, too. Only I thought he was wondering if it was cool if he could post his own play-by-play of it, independent of mine but in this thread. ![]()
It's probably because the movies and books tell the various stories in much different ways. Our back and forth about Sirius Black goes to show just that. ![]() As for how my rankings compare to Purps' so far, well, they're in the first post. Have a look.

Could this be? Indeed it is! Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince is a go, bitches! Before I start the film, I just wanted to say that this is the first film in this marathon that I have seen absolutely nothing from before - except for whatever advertising clips I may have seen. Although, I don't think I've seen much advertising for Half-Blood Prince or either of the Deathly Hallows movies since my TV access and use has been mostly non-existent for the last three years or so. So from here on out, everything is completely new to me. I think that will make for a much more interesting experience since it won't be tainted by any past viewings. Also, the only thing that I know happens from this point on is: Spoiler: click to toggle Everything else is unknown. Anyway, let's start the show! Interesting opening. Oh shit, chaos in the muggle world. Holy shit. It's a bit unrealistic that everybody seems to have made it off that bridge okay, but still... holy shit. Mmm. I like her. Hot waitress is hot. I'm assuming this is the muggle world since she doesn't know who Potter is and the stuff on the paper wasn't animated. Yep. Dumbledore seems very... odd right now. This is making me wonder who the "Half-Blood Prince" is exactly. Voldemort? Didn't you say he was born of a muggle and wizard? So... making him a half-blood? Okay, so maybe I missed it, but what is with the constant reference to Potter having his mother's eyes? I was just about to say that it'd be cool if we had pictures that moved like that, but we're just about there with those digital picture frames. That is probably my favorite method of travel that I've seen. It seems to be the best and most efficient. Time to work on the Harry/Ginny pairing, it looks like. She's very cute. Looks kind of like a younger version of Ginger Spice... which I'm cool with. Once again, Hermione and Ron exactly where Harry ends up. Ron was expected but not Hermione. ![]() Why do we never see Hermione's parents at all anyway? I know they're muggles but still... a passing scene or something. Unless we have and I missed it. Oh... I guess everyody didn't survive the destruction of the bridge. They definitely made it seem like everybody did in the scene since you saw nobody fall and the far shot showed both sides with crowds rushing away but far away from the part collapsing. They should have made the deaths seem more obvious. It would have added to the danger. Is it weird that I find Bellatrix kind of sexy? Always have. So does Dumbledore and the other at Hogwarts know about Snape's still present relationship with the Death Eaters, or do they still think he used to be involved? At the Weasley twins shooting down Ron. The twins are awesome. Almost top five material, for me.Ginny is really growing on me for some reason. I love that she is finally getting more screen time. It seems pretty ridiculous for Hermione and Ron to so quickly dismiss Harry's idea that Draco is trying to become or is officially now a Death Eater. It would only make sense. What is this blonde girl's name btw? I can never remember it. She's a very likeable character, imo. Does every of the main student characters have another random person with a crush on them? Hmm... speaking about love potions. I wonder if the girl who is crushing on Ron will use it? All signs seem to make it likely. Especially with her being front and center for much of this scene. So Harry has Voldemort's old book, I'm guessing? Haha Sheamus. Poor boy. Orphanage? I didn't know Voldemort was in an orphanage. Oh snap, snake whisperer. Cue Dumbledore slightly shitting his pants. I'm only 45 minutes into this movie and already I feel like so much more progress has happened than the entirety of Prisoner of Azkaban and it's already so much more entertaining than Order of the Phoenix. I hope the remaining hour and a half don't make me go back on this because if it keeps going at this rate, this movie could end up with a very high rating.Crap. Quidditch. Nevermind. Worst movie ever. Ron, if you want to use an old fashioned death curse right about now, I wouldn't blame you... just saying. The girl with the crush on Ron is... unsettling. I've never thought about how much it must suck to be a midget in the snow. They are doing an absolutely amazing job at slowly putting Hermione and Ron together. I'm loving every second of it. Is Hermione drunk or something? Oh shit, that's actually pretty creepy. Bad ass. I bet there were a ton of kids screaming because of that. Haha "Why is with something happens it is always you three?" "Believe me professor, I've been asking myself the same question for six years." ![]() After knowing him best in this role and the role of the depressed robot in Hitchhiker's Guide, I can't even begin to imagine Alan Rickman smiling and laughing. Even in Galaxy Quest I don't recall any smiles. Did he smile in Die Hard at all? The quidditch gear looks a lot like rugby gear. This is the only time I've ever been interested in quidditch, and only because I like Ron and want to see him get some glory for once. What a twist! Great moment of bonding for Hermione and Harry. Hermione gave in to the douche. Way to go, Ron. Whatshername is a very odd girl, indeed. Very likeable but very odd. Not completely sure what was happening just now with Draco, but I'm sure he plans on getting Harry or Dumbledore into there or something. If only the douche was a saiyan, he'd love to get his hands on some Dragon Balls. Draco is starting to look a lot like a less anorexic looking version of a friend I grew up with. British blood runs strong. Christ, that girl is creepy. Ooh... Nymphadora. She looks much older now. Although to be honest, Ginny is much more attractive. I don't know why, though. Something about her personality is just really warm and kind. I think the only Weasley family member that I'm familiar with that I don't care much about is the mom. Ron, the twins, Ginny, and the father are all awesome characters. Vanishing cabinet. So what was with the chunk of apple missing exactly? I know he says it can be temperamental but what exactly happened? Hmm. I guess I'll be finding out. Aw, the moment is ruined by a bit of anarchy. Oh yeah, that's why Harry is so instant rage filled towards Bellatrix. She killed Sirius I had already forgotten. ![]() That Death Eater looks kind of like Sabretooth from the X-Men (first movie). I have to say that I love how they move around, too. That probably tops Dumbledore's method of personal transport. The actor playing young Tom Riddle is doing a great job at being unsettling and dark. I can believe he becomes Voldemort much easier than the Tom Riddle from The Chamber of Secrets. It's odd. All of this Hogwarts stuff is kind of making me miss school. First time that's ever happened since I finished up, believe it or not. Odd. Ron under a love spell? Yep. Her creepy factor just went up even higher. Wait, what? Who is he talking about? Ohh... the girl that was crushing on Harry. Poor Ron. ![]() Hmm... suspicious. Snape? Draco? The new professor whose name I keep missing? God that girl is creepy. It's nice to see Draco is finally getting some depth. Up until this movie he's always been a terribly one dimensional generic "bad snob" kind of character. I had to pause when Harry glances down at the book in the dining hall. "Sectumsempra - For Enemies" was all I could make out so I had to read the rest. Interesting bit at the second half "'panacea,' a remedy that supposedly would cure all diseases and prolong life indefinintely and the discovery of a universal solvent." What exactly did that curse do? Other than hurt him, obviously. @ the "not to mention pinchers" part.Tom Riddle would make for an excellent Sith. They do a great job at making people look younger in the flashbacks of these films. Holy shit. Yeah, I figured that water was going to be dangerous and come into play somehow. I'm not entirely sure what's going on right now, though. I got distracted and missed why they're doing what they're doing exactly. I came back in right before Dumbledore started to drink the potion. Draco showing signs of a possible face turn. He became a much more dramatically interesting character in this movie. Uh oh. Snape. Dumbledore. Is this the moment? It is! Holy shit... I've been hearing about it for years and I finally experienced it. See, now that is how you make somebody's death mean something. Even though Harry should be a lot more broken up about it at this point, imo. They didn't just kill Hagrid did they? ![]() Holy shit again! I did not see that coming at all. Great swerve. Absolutely awesome. That just shot my interest in Snape right back up again. Okay, Hagrid is fine. Dumbledore however... I can't help but fear the next two films will feel like something is missing without Dumbledore in them. R.A.B.? Hmm. You know, random thought, but as awesome as it must be for these three to have been involved in this and reach such a successful peak in their acting careers, it must be kind of bittersweet knowing that their peak happened so early and that from here on out they'll probably never be able to truly escape it in future roles. Most people will always see Harry, Hermione, and Ron. Anywho, the film has ended and now it's time for the end review! -- I loved it. I was afraid going into it that it might end up being like Azkaban or Phoenix, which both seemed like they'd be great at a glance but proved to be utterly disappointing. However, that was definitely not the case here. It really feels like every single major or semi-major character developed by leaps and bounds in this one film, which they've kind of struggled with over the last few, and the plot has thickened immensely. The atmosphere is thick with imminent and terrible danger and the villains seem like a legitimate threat, even with Voldemort rarely appearing at all so far in the series (appearing more in flashbacks as Tom Riddle than in the present as Voldemort). I really can not wait to see what happens in the next two films. I did feel like it could have used more Hogwarts scenes, you know, day to day life at Hogwarts interwoven with the greater story. Those are often my favorite parts of the films. There's also a little something missing that I can't place. I don't know what it is, but it's picking at me a bit. As a result, the score is affected just a bit however the score is still quite good. I had suspected this movie might end up on the higher end of the scale during the whole thing, but I was always cautious that it might start to go down at any moment. That said... This is quite a refreshing way to read about the movies, through your eyes, I have to say.. as I've read all the books and it's been a while since I watched most of the movies. You're bringing up some good points and also reminding me of some key happenings that had completely slipped my mind. |

It's partially why I chose a play-by-play method of saying exactly what I'm thinking while watch them, rather than the standard review method of gathering your thoughts afterwards and then trying to talk about the film you saw. Not only is it easier for me, but it also comes off much more natural. Not to mention there are undoubtedly a ton of parts I might forget if I didn't take the time to comment on them as they happened. I'm a very easily distracted person, especially with non-interactive things, so it's probably the best method of review for me. I also wanted to make this "marathon" a bit more of an experience rather than some throwaway series of posts or even one post. This method is probably the best way to bring in other people to talk about the films and also for me to learn more about the Harry Potter universe as I go along through the films, stuff I might have overlooked or questions I might have that don't seem to be obviously answered when I watched the films. |

For the longest time, this was my least favorite book and least favorite movie of the series. I thought Harry came across as a whiny baby that was upset that no one would believe him when he couldn't do anything more than guess and speculate. This movie has grown on me and I like it more than Sorcerer's Stone or Chamber of Secrets, but it still ranks towards the bottom of my list. I point this out just because I am honestly curious to see your opinions unfold as I read through this review.
Yup, Voldemort is only half-blood. He had a witch for a mother and a muggle for a father. Didn't he even say in one movie that he wasn't going to keep his filthy muggle name, which is why he changed it to Voldemort? I think it was either Chamber of Secrets or Goblet of Fire. Might have just been in the books.
Not really sure how many times they mentioned it in the movie series, but people that knew Lily and James Potter often say that Harry is the slitting image of James, except for his eyes. He has Lily's eyes.
Yup, apparation is easily the best way of travel. You saw Dobby do it in the second movie, but we saw a more "in person" look when Harry and Dumbledore did it. It is also the most dangerous form of travel since you can splinch yourself -- leave split part of your body and/or leave it behind.
I am pretty sure they were in one of the earlier movies. We saw them in passing, so you might have missed it. You'll also see them in DH1.
If it is weird, I don't want to be normal!
I forget how much was in the movie, but at the end of Goblet of Fire Dumbledore basically gives the orders to reform the Order of the Phoenix. One of the things he says is "Severus...you know what to do". What he means is that he wants Snape to become a double agent again and seem like he's working for Voldemort but really report back to Dumbledore. By doing this, Dumbledore is aware that Snape is going to have to tell Voldemort some of the things he (Dumbledore) knows and plans, but trust Severus enough to not reveal everything. Just enough for Voldemort trusts Snape. And Snape also tells Dumbledore as much as he can about what Voldemort is planning. The question has always been where does Snape's loyalty lie and which side is he really playing?
Spoiler: click to toggle
The strange one? That's Luna Lovegood. She gets made fun of a lot for her bizarre outlook on life and is even often called Loony Lovegood. Harry is friends with her, but still feels odd around her sometimes just for the thing she says. For example, she says she misses the DA because it was almost like having friends. It's just awkward honesty on her part. Or are you talking about Ron's girlfriend. That's Lavender Brown.
I told you this already. Witch put spell on muggle. Witch thinks he is really in love and takes spell off. Muggle runs away. Witch has baby at orphanage and dies.
I have no idea what scene you are reacting to.
I'm sure he smiled once or twice in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. A mocking smile, but a smile still.
This was towards the end of the movie, right? I believe the chunk missing was a sign that it worked. He put the apple in and it vanished to the other cabinet. Whomever was at the other cabinet took a bite out and sent it back to show he had received it.
That's just the movie version. The only wizards that were known to fly without broom in the books were Voldemort and Snape. But I do agree that it looked very cool and was never bothered by it. It was one of the changes from the book that I thought added to the story. Plus, like I said, I liked the over all design of the Death Eaters a lot more here (and in Order of the Phoenix) than I did in the Goblet of Fire. I thought those cone head things they wore in GOF was tacky and would have limited their movement since it'd be harder to balance those things.
Horace Slughorn. But most people get called by their last name in this series, so he's known mostly as Professor Slughorn or just Slughorn. Also, did you notice at the beginning that he was transfigured into a chair? I believe you had wondered what happened when a human transfigured into a non-living object. Did that answer your questions?
It's just described as a attack that causes several deep sword like gashes to appear on the victim. It's most likely a deadly curse, since Draco would surely have died if Snape hadn't had known the counter curse. And you know now why he knew the counter curse, right?
Dumbledore believes he tracked down a Horcrux. He asks Harry to join him, but only under the condition that Harry do everything Dumbledore tells him, even if his orders are to leave Dumbledore for death. Voldemort has the Horcrux hidden in the middle of the hidden lake. Dumbledore knows not to touch the water since it likely has a curse on it. The locket that they believe is a Horcrux is at the bottom of a basin filled with liquid. They try several methods to remove the liquid (since they can't put their hand in it, it feels solid) so Dumbledore believes he must drink the potion. Harry volunteers, but Dumbledore insists he is the one to drink it. As Dumbledore drinks it, he falls down screaming in agony and crying about past memories that we do not know of yet. At the end, he says he's thirsty. Very thirsty. Harry tries to magic some water, but it disappears before it reaches Dumbledore. So Harry has to dip into the lake water. When he touches the water Inferi (dead bodies under Voldemort's spell) come out of the water and try to drag Harry (who touched the water) under, which would have killed Harry and turned him into an Inferi as well. Dumbledore comes to enough to save Harry by making a huge rope of fire -- since he knows Inferi are afraid of light and fire.
I told you this movie had a lot of people feeling sympathetic for Draco and made a lot even like his character. I wonder, did your opinion of him change?
He was in denial at this point. And he let himself be too wrapped up in anger towards Snape. He was holding out hope -- minimum hope -- that Dumbledore was somehow still alive and wanted to kill Snape. So he didn't let himself feel the pain of Dumbledore dying immediately.
What the hell happened? This is like the third time in just this review that I have no idea what you are talking about?
Maybe. Maybe not. Is Dumbledore truly dead? Is he truly gone? Did he become a ghost? Is he now inside a painting inside the Headmaster's office? These are the questions people were left with after this book. So I'm leaving you with the same questions before you watch DH.
Let me save you the time: you won't give a shit.
Harry just had a new horror movie come out earlier this year "The Woman in Black" and everyone I knew said they just wanted to see him pull out a wand to attack the ghost.
I expected this since it's the opposite of what I thought about the movie. ![]() |

It feels like it comes up all the time in these films. Even Harry's response seemed to reflect that he's heard it a hundred times already.
I was talking about Luna. I can never remember her name for some reason. Although I was curious was Ron's crazy girlfriend's name was. All I knew was that it started with an "L" because of the heart drawing scene on the train.
Blame it on too much new information over the course of watching all the films.
Hermione seemed to be drunk after they drank the stuff like looked like orange cream soda, and immediately afterwards it was the scene where... damn it, I knew her name but already forgot it, that girl was possessed by a cursed necklace intended for Dumbledore. The scene looked like something out of a horror movie.
Ohhh.... While watching it, I hadn't realized it was a kind of portal to another cabinet. I just thought it was a kind of portal to another dimension kind of thing and that maybe something nasty was there, or that the apple was randomly damaged. It wasn't until the end that I realized it was a method of transport, but even then I didn't realize there was a second cabinet.
Kind of. His was a willing transfiguration though, wasn't it? Wasn't he hiding from the Death Eaters? That's what I had thought anyway. So I wonder if there's a difference between a willing and unwilling transfiguration, since an unwilling wouldn't be able to pop out of it so easily I'm assuming.
I know now, yes. Not at the time, though. I didn't put much thought into it really.
By the end, I realized the Horcrux aspect of it but I didn't realize why he was drinking the potion until you explained it.
I wouldn't say I like him, but he's definitely more interesting now. I found him to mostly be annoying more than anything before, and kind of a boring character. He was always just a generic wimpy bully until this movie.
Snape revealing himself to be the Half-Blood Prince. I was convinced it was Voldemort the entire time.
About that painting, I noticed Dumbledore was dead in that too. I didn't know what to make of it and almost brought it up.

I think this thread has been really strong evidence to the theory that the fans of the books and people who only see the films have dramatically different perspectives on the movies. That's to be expected to some degree usually, but it's really strong with this series. |

Yes.
He was dead in what painting?
I'll spoil it since it's a very minor spoiler and I know you won't care. Sirius Black. I forget his middle name. But his initials would be S ? B. So RAB would be Sirius's brother. Regulus A Black. You'll only learn 1 thing about him and that's about it. I can explain it a little better, but I'll wait.
I would agree. Right up to the last movie. I am fairly confident you'll really dig DH2. I'm not sure about DH1 since it can be...uneventful...in some stretches, but DH2 was awesome. So I'm more curious to know if you'll repeat Purp's opinion and still rank HBP as the best if DH can to the list for you. |

In his former chambers there are a bunch of paintings, one with a chair and Dumbledore in it in which Dumbledore appears dead. I just went back and took a screen shot of what I mean. Dumbledore painting
That's kind of funny since I kept thinking it had something to do with Sirius, but I couldn't figure out how the "R.A." part of it would fit into that. ![]()
I might have to watch both of the Deathly Hallows films immediately back to back if I can, to kind of re-enforce the idea that they're two parts of the same film more or less rather than two stand alone flicks. Kind of like how the two Kill Bill movies work. On their own, they're kind of weak - especially the second - but as one whole thing the quality is much higher. I'm just not sure if I should rate them separately or together. I suppose I should do it separately. |

Perhaps. But it seems like an odd time to sleep. Then again, he did just die. That's probably an exhausting experience. Wait a minute... if he's in the portrait and still "alive" in a sense, why can't he just interact with Harry like the other ones? Maybe advise him about what is happening? Or is it more like those pictures they have of snapshots of people where it's animated but more or less just a kind of small video file? |

Glad to see you're giving some thought to this. Give you small taste of what people that read the books had to sit through. Only, you have a much less amount of time since you can just watch the next 2 movies and know, whereas the book audience had to wait a few years for the final book to be released and even then had to take the time to read it. But to be honest, I didn't have that much time to wait for my answer either. I had bought all the books as a set after they were all released. So I just had to pick up the last book and read it to get my answer. Which I did. |

I hadn't thought much about his death at the time. I think with the amount of time that has passed (It's been at least a year since I've seen it, but probably longer), and your review/thoughts in my head that I might end up with a different opinion of the film. I decided I would try to do a play-by-play review as I watch. I've read this book several times. I've seen this movie several times (at least 3 or 4). So there is absolutely nothing new or surprising here. But I'll give my opinions on what I like/dislike along with anything I may have forgotten. I bought this DVD at Sam's Club. The sound is horrible. I also bought the Blu-Ray collector's set from Sam's that had all the movies on blu ray. Those didn't work right either, so I took them back and got a refund. I wish I had taken this DVD back too. I seriously have to turn the volume almost max just to hear it. It's just this DVD. ![]() I love that music that plays when a Harry Potter movie first starts. It always gives me happy feelings inside my chest. ![]() Open with Harry and Dumbledore after the Ministry of Magic from the last movie. They do a close up of Dumbledore's hand. They do that because it's healthy there and we later learn his hand is blackened and disfigured. This disfigurement happens because...wait, I think they wait until DH2 to explain this. Death Eater attack has cool visuals. But it always annoys me how they make the magic world so obvious in the movies. They try to remain secret in the books. It's actually a law. The Death Eaters do attack muggles in the books, but they aren't as open and obvious about it. It's a small peeve, but they do it in several movies. Like in OotP when they were taking Harry to Sirius's house and rode the brooms close to the boats/cars. In the book, they were so far above the clouds that Harry almost froze. Oh well. It' snot not a major complaint, really, but it has always annoyed me. The waitress that flirts with Harry is very sexy. She reminds me of Megalyn Echikunwoke, only thinner. Still sexy. This scene was actually made just for the movie. In the book, Dumbledore goes to scorn the Dursleys. I like this added scene so I was never bothered by them adding it to the movie. I was disappointed to never get to see Dumbledore scold the Dursleys though. In the book, Slughorn had facial hair that was described like he was a walrus. In the movie, he is clean shaved. I wonder why they opted not to have facial hair for his character. Not a big difference or anything, just something trivial that I wonder about. They mentioned Regulus Black when they first showed Slughorn. I bet you either didn't notice or completely forgot. It's kind of funny hearing Dumbledore call a girl pretty. He's a gay character. We never find out during the movies/books, but the author did reveal it on her website. I've read the actor that plays Dumbledore actually became very cranky on the set when she revealed that Dumbledore is gay. The Burrow (Ron's house) has changed since the second movie. There wasn't a swamp around the Burrow last time we saw it. I honestly forget why Hermione is at Ron's house this time. There is usually a perfect explanation for why they all meet up. I forget that reason here. The woman with Bellatrix and Snape is Draco's mother. I think it becomes obvious in this scene, but I'm not entirely sure. Snape's house...told you Hogwarts teachers go home during break. Another side note, this scene takes place earlier in the book than in the movie. It's one of the first things we see in the book. The first thing in the book is the Muggle Prime Minister being introduced to the new Minister of Magic (Fudge got fired after Voldemort returned, since he denied it) and explaining how only he knows of the magic world. Then we see this scene. Fred and George. They are fun in the movies...MUCH better in the books. Shame what's to come of them in the next movies. ![]() Ollivander's wand shop is completely abandoned. At the very start of the movie, before the bridge scene, did you see them kidnap Ollivander? Another trivia for you, remember in Chamber of Secrets when Harry said "diagonally" and ended up in the bad side of town? That is the shop with the other cabinet. If I'm not mistaken, we actually see the second cabinet in that movie. That's the one the Death Eaters use to get into Hogwarts. It makes sense that Hermione and Ron wouldn't immediately suspect Draco as a Death Eater. Voldemort tends to associate only with skilled wizards, not kids. Turns out, Harry is right...but just kind of. Voldemort is actually using Draco to get revenge on lucious for messing up in Order of the Phoenix. He expects Draco to fail and for either Dumbledore to kill Draco or Voldemort himself will kill Draco when he fails. More trivia, in the book Nymphadora Tonks finds Harry, not Luna. Also, Tonks looks so...different, in this movie because she is upset over something. Harry thinks it's because she loved Sirius. Turns out it was because she was in love with... Flitwick letting Harry in is different from the book too. He's stuck on the train and Tonks finds him. By the time he gets to Hogwarts, he missed the carriages and Tonks sends a Patronus to signal someone to come get Harry. Snape comes gets Harry and does those great little Snape comments towards Harry the entire walk back to Hogwarts. Just something fun left out of the movie. "He's covered in blood again. Why is he always covered in blood?" ![]() Slughorn...a new teacher that doesn't turn out to be inept, bad, or really that major of a character. He did have the memory needed, but I don't remember him being a major character of this movie. Am I remembering wrong? Dumbledore starting with talking about Voldemort. Oh, and Aurors patrolling hogwarts? Great start to a school year. Harry wants to be an Auror. Did you catch that, Kraul? I know you mentioned you wondered if he did anything with his life. An Auror is a dark wizard catcher, in case you missed that explanation from the Goblet of Fire. But it's the top of the top, the elite of the elite. So whatever the highest level of police is (FBI? CIA?) that's the equivalent. Is it wrong that they had to brew a death potion to win a luck potion? Seems like some kind of accident could have happened there, huh? Dumbledore put a ring with the old diary from COS. Curious. If you have never seen the trailer for HBP, go watch it. It revolved around Dumbledore meeting Tom Riddle for the first time (first memory). I thought it was a haunting preview.... "Did I know then that I had just met the most dangerous dark wizard of all time? (dramatic pause)...No". Awesome preview. Especially with the clips of the first memory woven into it. Go watch it. I really like Dumbledore in this movie. He's more calm, thought provoking, and true to the book here than any other movie since this guy replaced the first guy. In other movies, he seemed to shout and make a lot of unnecessary commotion. Less is definitely more with Dumbledore. I hate Quidditch. I forget if this happens in the movie, but in the book Hermione worries Harry is spending too much time with the book and is obsessed with it. He ends up talking to Ginny about being possessed by a book, since Ginny has experience with that sort of thing. Chamber of Secrets and all. In the book, Draco wasn't even at Hogsmeade that weekend, I don't believe. Ron is the only one of the gang to not date yet. Hermione had Krum in GOF. Harry had Chang in OotP. Now Ron's turn. You saw that coming, right? Hermione does seem kind of drunk after leaving the bar. ![]() Book trivia: in the book, Hagrid is kind of a bumbling fool here and another student tells him to take Katie Bell to the hospital wing. Ginny has nice skin. True story. ![]() Hermione has nice skin...as skin goes. ![]() Hermione: "My parents are dentists" Everyone: .... Hermione: "They tend to people's teeth" Slughorn: "Fascinating. And is that a dangerous profession? Slughorn's facial expressions are really good. Maybe that's why they remove his character's facial hair. Fun fact: When Tom Riddle was in Hogwarts, most of the teachers loved him. They thought he was very handsome, polite, smart, and talented. Most expected great things of him and many had him pegged as a future Minster of Magic. Dumbledore had his concerns the entire time, of course. That lion on Luna's head roars. Harry didn't spike Ron's drink. Confidence is the greatest drug of them all. Poor Hermione. So jealous. She has to know Ron wants her. Did she forget the Yule Ball a few years back? But how awesome of a witch is she to conjure little birds so suddenly even when crying and upset? Hermione: "She's only interested in you because she thinks you're the chosen one" Harry: "I AM the chosen one" Puking on Snape? I think I'd rather face the dragon from GOF! ![]() Draco doesn't accept help from Snape because he thinks Snape is trying to steal his glory and make himself look better in Voldemort's eyes. Lupin looking older and more ragged than before. Being a werewolf cannot be good for your body. Dumbledore trusts Snape, but he does not share his reasons with anyone else other than Snape. So, ultimately, no one knows but the two of them. I haven't read the book in ages, but I don't remember Author Weasley explaining the Vanishing Cabinet to Harry. Tonks getting scared that Lupin ran for the attack and ran after him. Curious. Greyback is the bad werewolf's name. This scene, the attack on the Burrow, was also added to the movie and not in the book. Good scene, though. There were lots more memories that was cut out of the book. All these memories are backstory of Voldemort. One memory was about his witch mother and muggle father. These memories are interesting if you like to know about Voldemort's past. This is getting very long, I think. I'm not sure what the cut off is for post legnth, so I'll cut it off here. I've been awake for over 24 hours now, and sitting in a dark room watching a movie and typing on a computer isn't good right now. I think I'll pause the movie here and resume later. Hope you're enjoying so far.

That basic song and the one I posted in the "Get Out Of My Head" thread have been getting stuck in my mind constantly since I started this. Mostly the song I posted (which I've been humming all morning and all of last night after watching the last film).
You know, I thought I noticed his hand blackened but I wasn't sure. I thought maybe he was wearing some kind of glove.
I've always thought it was kind of odd, too, but it's visually much more exciting so I understand why they did it. As for the Death Eaters, I just assumed they don't care and enjoy causing that chaos.
Maybe he would have looked too similar to Harry's uncle, had they gone with the originally described look? And I didn't notice.
Oh yeah, I forgot all about that. I remember a minor fuss was made about it in the media.
I think she says something about having just showed up shortly before Harry did, and something about some kind of danger or something. So she was probably sent there for her own protection while they waited to return to Hogwarts.
I had strongly suspected as much but I was still adjusting to the movie, so I missed any confirmation of it.
ffffffffffffffffff
I had completely forgotten they took anyone, to be honest. I don't remember them making a big deal out of it afterwards so it kind of just faded from my memory.
But for them to so quickly dismiss it when they know his dad is deeply involved with Voldemort and Draco has always hated Potter and his friends?
He's fairly major, as you'll probably remember as it goes on.
It's like being in school after Columbine happened all over again. ![]()
I caught it but I didn't know what it was. If it was a throw away line or what.
I was surprised a bunch of students were allowed to brew any kind of death potion at all. I would have thought that kind of thing would be discouraged.
At first, I thought they were looking down on her parents... until I realized they had no idea what a "dentist" was.

That's the opening to all 8 movies. The song kind of changes a little with each. The one played for Chamber of Secrets is my favorite. I also like the more somber sounding song for DH2, but it doesn't have that Harry Potter feeling that COS does. If that makes any sense.
That blackened hand is actually very relevant to something else that happens in DH2, but I'll let you wait to see yourself. Just remember the blackened hand as you watch the movie.
They do enjoy causing chaos and they treat hurting muggles like sport, but they are still secretive about it. They want to wipe out mugles, but not expose their own world.
Yeah, that was said in the movie, but I forget what the book reason is. The books go in more depth and explain things better. I may have to get my book out and look it up.
![]()
But not as major as any of the previous. I think only Professor Quirrell in the first movie had less overall emphasis during the movie even though he turned out to be a major character at the end. Ok, back to the movie. Back to the play-by-play. |

Ron eating one of the candies sent to Harry and being drugged to love Rhomilda Vane was funny. This scene was used in one of the previews for the movie. I still like the Dumbledore/first memory preview the best though That still makes me excited about the movie! I forget if it was mentioned in the movie, but the poisoned mead that Slughorn gave to Ron by accident was really given to Slughorn because Draco knew that Slughorn doesn't drink that and was expecting him to re-gift it to Dumbledore. As Dumbledore explained to Draco at the end, this was very sloppy of Draco and relied a great deal on chance. No, wait, yeah they did do the "it's a gift I was going to re-gift" thing in the movie. Good. ![]() Terrible way to break up, huh Lavender? Your boyfriend says the name of another girl. Poor girl. You poor, obsessive, lap puppy of a girlfriend. In the book, she's described as snogging with Ron a lot. I'd put up with her obsessive behavior for a little snogging though. They just showed Draco using the vanishing cabinet with a bird. It's not working yet. But they did show the shop with the other cabinet. That's the shop that Harry ended up in accidentally in COS. Aw, Ron doesn't remember saying Hermione's name. That cool smirk Hermione had at his bedside meant nothing, but was cool as hell to watch. Oh, Draco is no happy Katie Bell is back. Did you notice the empty bird cage as Draco was walking? Dead birds are dead. They left out the part where Draco was crying to Moaning Myrtle about how Voldemort is going to kill him if he doesn't succeed and that he HAS to succeed. Oh, and now Draco is dead. As good as. Good thing Snape is nearby, right? In the book, Snape only finds out because Moaning Myrtle screams "MURDER! MURDER IN THE BATHROOM". And in the book, the counter curse is described as song-like. And Snape DEMANDS Harry brings him all his school books. Snape knows Harry has his old book as soon as he sees Draco. Harry and Ginny in the Room of requirements. He opens the Vanishing Cabinet! If only he knew then what he knows now, right? Ginny gives Harry a little kiss. This is not how this scene happens in the book at all, but this was a nice little way to keep progress the storyline without adding more Quidditch scenes. Ron: "Did you and Ginny do it?" Harry: "WHA...." Ron: "Hide the book". Harry stoned on Liquid Luck is funny: Hermione: (a bunch of stuff about Slughorn) Harry: Right....I'm going to go down to Hagrids Hermione: What?! The giant spider that Hagrid is burying is the same spider from COS that tried to kill Harry and Ron. He looks a lot smaller in this movie though. Goodbye...friend of Hagrid. Stoned Harry being funny again! ![]() In the book, Slughorn sneaks the venom from the spider since he doesn't want to upset Hagrid. And Aragog has always reminded me of Aragorn from LOTR...just in the name. But as the image you posted earlier, there are a lo of similarities in the two series. Hagrid's hair and beard looks different in this movie. I liked his appearance better in the first 2 movies. That's a sad story about the fish disappearing out of the bowl the day Lily was murdered (not in the book). Harry isn't afraid of saying Voldemort's name like every other wizard. Like Dumbledore said..fear of the name is...shit, I forgot what he said! ![]() Slughorn: "Don't judge me...you don't know what he was like then" Um, yeah I do. He was charming, intelligent, and delightful. No one but Dumbledore suspected him in any way. Tom Riddle already knew all this about the Horcruxes before coming to Slughorn. He only cam to Slughorn to find out if it was possible to create more than one Horcrux. 7 is the most magical number (never explained why). Dumbledore knows immediately that this means Voldemort has created 7 Hocruxes. And the ring is a Horcrux. And the Diary. They say anything can be a Horcrux, which is true, but Voldemort usually chooses things that have a sense of grandeur. He picked the ring because it belonged to Salazar Slytherin, one of the founders of the school. He chose the diary so he could reopen the Chamber of Secrets. The Locket belonged to another School Founder. Snape telling Dumbledore that Dumbledore asks for too much and that maybe Snape doesn't want to do it anymore. Do you know what he was talking about there? Dumbledore is so damn cool in this movie. I wish the actor had played him this way in every movie. The cave with the hidden Horcrux...that's were the Orphanage used to take the kids when Tom Riddle was young. Well, not to the cave, but to the ocean. Tom Riddle found the cave on his own. But Voldemort chose to hide his Horcrux in a place that had meaning to him. Just a little fun info for you about Voldemort's motivations, just because I know you are interested in him and they leave that bit out of the movie. That wand hand looks horrible. It looks like it'd be painful, which I'd imagine it is considering it was cursed. Good thing the curse didn't spread thanks to...someone. But I can see how it looked like a glove too. The scene with Dumbledore drinking the potion was more dramatic in the book, but it's better in the movie than I originally remembered it being. Dumbledore just showed more signs of pain and mental suffering in the book. He said more than "kill me". He actually talked about painful memories of his past....his sister, to be exact. Oh, Harry just realizes he has to touch the lake water. He had a bigger "oh shit" face than when Tom Riddle told Dumbledore he speaks to snakes. ![]() And there are the Inferi. In the book, we saw them under the water. I imagined a scene similar to LOTR when Frodo saw the dead bodies in the swamp. Maybe it's a good thing they didn't go that route and give critics another reason to make the comparison. ![]() Watching Dumbledore swing a massive rope of fire is an amazing scene. It's just great visual affects that really brought the scene to life. And the Death Eaters go into Borjins and Burkes. I missed the scene with the apple. I saw the live bird, but I don't remember the apple. And the cabinet opens and there are the Death Eaters. Madam Pompfrey? No, Dumbledore needs Snape. In the book, Harry is under his invisibilty cloak here (Dumbledore asked him to keep it on him at all times). When they hear Draco come up the stairs, Dumbledore freezes Harry and Harry cannot move. The spell is not broke until Dumbledore is killed. Also, in the book, Snape does not whisper at harry to be quiet. Hey, they did include the part with Dumbledore calling Draco's attempt on his live to be lazy and predictable. They did cut this scene down, if you get a chance to read anything from the books be sure you read this scene between Dumbledore and Draco. I think you'll like it a lot. Dumbledore weakened and unarmed. The Death Eater's biggest dream come true. Dumbledore isn't really selling the affects of the potion here, though. In the book, he could barely stand and had to lean on things to stay up. "Severus...please".. What was Dumbledore begging for? You'll learn later. Keep that in mind. When Sirius died in OotP, the muted Harry's scream to make it seem more epic. They should have muted things when Dumbledore fell as well. In the book, Hagrid's dog Fang is in his house when it's on fire. Hagrid runs in to save his dog. Both are ok. Just thought I'd provide a little extra detail in case you find it interesting. Harry is no match for Snape. He beat Voldemort 5 times already, but Snape kicks his ass with minimal effort. Yes...he is...the half-blood prince! ![]() Death Eaters put up that sign whenever they kill. When the school saw the sign above, they knew someone was dead. They did no expect Dumbledore. In the book, they do a different tribute but I forget what off hand. I remember Dumbledore's Phoenix singing and calming everyone though. And they try to pull Harry off Dumbledore in the book, but he won't leave his body until Ginny comes to get him. They kind of did that here, but not as obvious. The wand lighting tribute that dissolves the Dark Mark is just for the movie, but cool. Professor McGoganall becomes the temporary Headmistress when Dumbledore dies. She was also the Headmistress when Dumbledore was forced out of the school in COS. "Do you think he would have done it? Draco?" "No" Harry doesn't think Draco would have done it because Draco confessed he HAD to kill Dumbledore or Voldemort was going to kill him (Draco), his mom, and is dad. Dumbledore offers Draco and his family his protection and says Voldemort won't hunt Draco down if he thinks Draco is dead...and Voldemort probably expect Dumbledore to kill Draco. So Dumbledore offers to fake Draco's death and protect Draco and his family. That's the stand up guy Dumbledore was. And Draco looked to accept Dumbledore's offer as he lowered his wand. But right when he lowered his wand, the Death Eaters walked in, then Snape, then...well, you know the rest. Hey, Fawkes did sing in this movie. It is suppose to ease the pain and fill everyone with hope. And Fawkes is never seen again after this. I must admit, watching this movie was much different than I remembered it being. I think I let the fact that I didn't like the book as much affect my over all opinion of this movie, but It was a really good movie. I will now have to reconsider my placement of this movie in my favorites list. I think it has moved up |

I'm just glad he didn't turn out to be a Death Eater in disguise or something. I might have dropped it half a star just for that. ![]()
Ron even comments on that towards the end of his relationship with her. He says something about how all she ever wants to do is snog. At first, I was like that might not be a bad thing but then I realized that after a few weeks of it constantly by such an obsessive girl, it might start getting really old.
I think that just re-enforced my idea that the cabinet led to something dangerous and wasn't some method of travel. I thought he was going to try to trap somebody in there and make the disappear. ![]()
They probably wanted the audience to think he was trying to turn full on evil and escape his hesitation, and not doing it because he's being pressured to. At least up to this point.
I was going to comment on that originally. ![]()
I thought so! If not the same, then a close relative.
I actually thought he was saying "Aragorn" at first. I paid close attention and barely made out "Aragog". ![]()
I noticed in the last movie (or maybe the movie before?) that it's getting more grey. He's aging ever so slightly through the movies. I don't know if it's natural or done specifically for the films, though.
Protecting Harry maybe? I read the first line of a spoiler earlier on accident. That's all I read but I'm assuming it's hinting at that.
I almost want to call it the Swamp of Sorrow(s), but I think that's the swamp from The Neverending Story. ![]() All I know is that the short scene in LotR at that swamp was the creepiest part of the movie. I would hate to be there so much, but then again, I hate the water and have always expected shit like those spirits to be lurking underneath the surface. ![]()
Probably because there's nobody to swoop in and save Harry this time or any bit of random luck. It's just him vs Snape and he's not quite up to that level yet. ![]()
I didn't even realize that was happening. I had just assumed the skull was representing Voldemort watching over the scene or something, and when they did the wand thing it just dissipated it with "the power of friendship" or something. I still don't think they made Harry respond appropriately since it felt like Dumbledore's death meant a lot less to him than Sirius' did, which based on what we have seen in the movies is ridiculous since Dumbledore was much more family-like and closer to Harry than Sirius was ever shown to be.
![]() The next two films will have quite a challenge ahead of them in match up to Half-Blood Prince, for me. |

And it might as well be one big movie, at that. ![]() Right now, I've been dedicating almost 100% of my viewing time to a YouTube profile I came across that literally has hours upon hours of classic wrestling PPVs (in one video, none of that Part 17 bullshit), wrestling docs, wrestling legend roundtables, etc. I could not sleep because I wanted to watch more. I feel like there are not enough hours in the day right now. In my tabs right now I have both parts of Forever Hardcore, WCW Souled Out 2000, and a playlist of 1984 - 1999 WWF PPVs. This might be gone tomorrow. Harry Potter will always be there.
