Mars dethrones king-sized chocolate bars
Company to stop sales of chocolate items topping 250 calories per portion

Mars Inc., maker of Snickers chocolate bars and Wrigley gum, plans to stop selling chocolate products that have more than 250 calories per portion, dooming king-sized bars.

While skeptics might assume the move is a way to reduce the amount of pricey cocoa used in products, the company says the action is part of a health-and-nutrition effort.

Among its goals are to stop shipping Mars chocolate products that exceed 250 calories per portion by the end of 2013. The company's chocolate brands include Snickers, Twix, M&Ms, 3 Musketeers, Mars, Milky Way, Dove and Galaxy. Today, a king-size Snickers bar contains 510 calories, although it says a serving size is one-third of a bar. A regular-size Snickers has 280 calories.

The company also aims by 2015 to reduce sodium levels in all Mars food products by 25 percent from 2007 levels.

"Mars has a broad-based commitment to health and nutrition, and this includes a number of global initiatives," the company said in a statement.

Among its other efforts are its 2007 pledge to no longer market chocolate products directly to children under 12, putting calorie counts on the front of packages, eliminating trans fat, reducing saturated fat and managing portions and calories. The company has also introduced several new products that have fewer than 200 calories.

Mars, a private company that claims sales of $30 billion, acquired Chicago-based Wrigley in 2008.

I can't help but think that if Mars was legitimately interested in the health of people, wouldn't they... oh, I don't know... stop making candy? :-/

I know, I know... it's an obvious ploy for publicity, to ease tensions with health advocates, and to probably to make money (buying up King Size candy bars while they can combined with maybe buying more standard size bars or in bulk packages when King is gone).

I like fun size. King size always makes me feel ill.

What is this shit! As a severely overweight American I am outraged and am prepared to file a class action suit against MARS Inc.

The Man. Any Questions?
Hahahaha.

The health gestapo strikes again. Should have just let Hitler win, and enact the selective breeding programs. Then we wouldn't be stupidly concerned with having nothing but people that conform to some shithead's idea of physical "fitness".

Here's an idea: worry less about people getting "fat", and more about getting gasoline under $3.50 a fucking gallon, and stopping a fucking 15-year economic depression. Oh, but that would actually help. Sorry, fuck all that, right?

STAY HYPED!!!
I don't remember the last time I ate a candy bar. I know it definitely wasn't a king size bar. This news has zero relevance to me or anything I do.

VERTICALLY CHALLENGED
I was hoping for better from this group.

It's only a cosmetic change. We're already seeing a change regarding this. Go to the store, Reese's has King Size, but if you look at M&M's, it's not king size, it's "Sharing Size" or with Milky Way it's "2 to go." In the sharing size or 2 to go versions, I would bet money on it being less or equal to 250 calories.

Also, more than half of their inventory is not applicable to this change. Neither is Nestle (not even an American company!)
