First Water-World Planet Discovered

AN astronaut attempting to visit recently discovered planet GJ1214b would land in hot water -- literally, US scientists say.

Researchers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics said they have identified an entirely new kind of planet, dominated not by rock, gas or other common materials, but water.

The planet is "a waterworld enshrouded by a thick, steamy atmosphere", they said in a statement, after scrutinising the planet with NASA's Hubble Space Telescope.

"GJ1214b is like no planet we know of," astronomer Zachary Berta said. "A huge fraction of its mass is made up of water."

GJ1214b was discovered in 2009 by the ground-based MEarth Project. Described as a "super-Earth", it is about 2.7 times Earth's diameter and weighs almost seven times as much.

Further studies in 2010 led to scientists suspecting that the planet, where the temperature is some 232 Celsius, was largely covered in water. This was confirmed by Mr Berta and his co-authors using Hubble to study the planet when it crossed in front of its host star.

The light of the star, filtered through the planet's atmosphere, gave clues to the mix of gasses, backing up the water vapour theory.

"The Hubble measurements really tip the balance in favour of a steamy atmosphere," Mr Berta said.

Further measurements and estimates led scientists to conclude that the planet has much more water than Earth and much less rock. That, together with high temperatures and pressure, likely produce some highly exotic results, including "hot ice", scientists say.

Our solar system contains three basic planet types: rocky, like Earth; gas giants like Jupiter or Saturn; and ice giants like Uranus.

Click here for another, must more detailed article from MSNBC that is too much of a bitch to copy and paste.

I just heard it on the opening of Coast To Coast AM.

I probably would have heard it on Science Fantastic with Dr. Michio Kaku (the whole reason I got around to listening to Coast To Coast AM right now, but I only just discovered it two nights ago and only for a minute. I can't seem to catch it again. :(

I think this news is fascinating but... unfortunately I know that despite it possibility being one the most important scientific discoveries in recent decades, nobody will probably pay attention to it because they're too interested in what some reality TV whore is getting paid or what celebrity is fucking people they probably shouldn't be fucking.

I shared it on Facebook, too, but it'll probably get skipped over by everybody else in favor of anti-Obama pictures and those damn "People Think I Do This" meme pictures.

Tells us more about the company you keep

I always thought of Earth as a water planet instead of rocky. This is cool news, it seems like the further we reach, the more we're finding planets that loosely resembles Earth.

Ugh. It's painful. There's a few that I can talk about stuff like this or philosophical stuff or a lot of topics I'm interested in like that but...

...most of them aren't that type. There's a strong reason why I'm leaning towards wanting to be a hermit. Most people I know don't really like to put much energy into understanding stuff unless it's either how much they can drink, how much drugs they can do, or about how 'Merica is the greatest thing ever and foreigners are evil.

I don't really like most the people I know, the more I think about it. :-/

What is going to be epic is when they discover alien life somewhere.

It doesn't even have to be "intelligent". If they found the equivalent of an ant it would blow minds around the world.

...but still most people would probably be more concerned with what's going to happen on Real Housewives of Orange County. :-/

I think to raise more interest, NASA should combine the two. For example, every so often they should blast space probes on a one way trip into space with the likes of the Kardashians on board. :tu:

The Man. Any Questions?
There is no space program to take advantage of it. Your hero deleted it, remember?
