Anybody familiar with Kevin Smith movies (Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Chasing Amy, Mallrats, etc.) know that Kevin Smith movies tend to take place in a fictional world called View Askewniverse, which is actually usually based on places in New Jersey. We know I live in the great Garden State, but nobody knows how close I am to all of this. To give one an indication of where I am in the View Askewniverse, one should look no further than Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash. In Smith movies, this is known as Brodie's Secret Stash, a comic book store Jay and Silent Bob constantly frequent. In reality, this is a real comic book store, and is located in Red Bank, NJ. Red Bank is literally one town over from me. I've never been to the store itself (but I've been to Red Bank and it has so much culture; the lead singer from a great NJ band Gaslight Anthem lives there), but I'm thinking of taking a trip over there very soon. In Chasing Amy, there is a very notable diner scene with Jay and Silent Bob. That diner is actually the Marina Diner, which is located no more than a half mile away from me in my current city. Menlo Park Mall, a mall referenced in the movie Mallrats, is about 5 minutes from where I work in Edison. It's not where the movie was filmed, but still an interesting and personal reference nonetheless. It is also the mall where I usually go to get Taco Bell, because that's the closest one to where I work. Also, in Chasing Amy, when whatshisface goes to meet her at the club, she announces herself from Middletown (which is where I live), and made a reference to how she "lost my virginity" in Sandy Hook, which is a beach 10 minutes from me. And finally, the main event...the convenience store from the movie Clerks. It is located in a city called Leonardo. The store itself isn't even a 5 minute drive for me. I make a right onto the highway, and make the second left, and I'm there. And it looks very similar to how it looked in the movie, which is amazing since the movie was shot such a long time ago. The video store, however, did close down. So that's Whosey's story of the day about my life and where I live. Edited by WWEFootos48, Jun 4 2012, 12:05 AM.

The Man. Any Questions?

Well, it makes sense that the Quick Stop was "real", since at the time Smith had a budget of like 20 bucks. He had to shoot in an actual location; he couldn't afford sets.Honestly, I guess I'd have to say I hate most of his movies. Yet I love Clerks, Mallrats, and Dogma. If he only made 5 films, I'd be on the "love most" side. A fine line... I'm still kind of undecided about Clerks II. I thought some parts were hilarious, but others sucked ass. |

Even in his later View Askewniverse this was the case, although he would choose specific locations because of budgets; like he shot Mallrats at a mall in Minnesota because it would have cost less there than at a local mall (one I've heard of but never been to). So technically that wasn't a real set, but he chose it because of budget concerns. And Chasing Amy was the same. The places they were shot at were also real, and that was AFTER the critical success of Clerks and I believe Jay and Silent Bob Strike back (I THINK Chasing Amy was his third movie). Even the record store some of the movie takes place in is an actual record store in Red Bank (same name) and is right by his comic book shop. I think that's what I appreciate about his movies, because it has such a local feel to it, especially for me, living so close to it. That's why I liked The Sopranos that much, because a LOT of it was shot using real places, of course with changed names. The meat market in the first episode of The Sopranos was filmed at the meat market 3 blocks from where I used to live, and my mom was almost an extra in the scene. And that's the ONLY reason I liked The Wrestler, because a vast majority was filmed in the said city I used to live in, and the clothing shop I used to walk by every day had a sign in their window that read "The Wrestler was filmed here." It just makes things seem more real I guess. And see, I'm undecided about Mallrats. I really liked Clerks, Chasing Amy and Dogma, but I didn't think the main storyline in Mallrats was strong enough. The Ethan Slupee scenes absolutely made the movie for me (staring at the picture all day trying to see the sailboat everyone else sees), but that's really about all that was memorable for me. You know, I was curious to see if there were ANY scene shot in ANY film whatsoever in my town and the only one I can find is this one in an old silent film from the 20's. The end race was filmed here only because goat racing was illegal in New South Wales. |

I'm dying at that statement.SO. EPIC though. I love older movies. The Great Train Robbery, which is considered one of the biggest innovations in movie history (first thing put to tape with a storyline), was filmed a few miles from where I work. Thomas Edison worked in aforementioned Menlo Park (before there was a mall there), so we can lay claim to a LOT of inventions around here. |
