Stand Back! There's a Hurricane Coming Through

Dredd takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring Dredd to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra's revered comic strip. Dredd is set for release in the US on September 21st this fall.

Dat song. At least no Rob Schneider. Looks like it could be a good action flick.

Yeah, this looks good. It should hopefully be better than the Stallone version anyway.

It's a fabulous new day, yes it is!
I saw this last night. Haven't seen the Stallone film, but the new Dredd was average at best despite the cool deaths. Olivia Thirlby was interesting and great to watch, though. Haven't seen it in 3D, but the film is intended to watch it in that format.

I wonder if watching this while on drugs would make the experience of watching the new Dredd much better.

Isn't the Stallone version something of a cult classic, though? Isn't it revered because of how bad it was? I remember an on going joke on Scrubs about Turk & JD's many viewings of Judge Dredd. I think they went as far as 100 viewings or something.

Are you going to watch it in 3D, DL? Since you would probably enjoy it more than I would, I think you might appreciate it more in 3D for certain sequences.

Nah, I hate the whole 3D thing. Plus it makes my eyes water like crazy.

I have no idea. I wouldn't doubt that there is some kind of following out there somewhere.

I'm very much looking forward to this new Dredd film though. I hear that if love your action films, you'll love this film. I'm evening considering breaking my 14 year streak and see it when it comes to theaters here at the end of the month.

Why not? It looks and sounds good to me. This, Looper and TDKR are the main films I've been looking forward to recently. I'm too late for TDKR, I think. I doubt I'm going to be bored at least. Plus I'm looking to get out of the house a bit more.

I haven't seen Looper, but that film's much higher on my "must-watch" list than Dredd was.

It wasn't on my plans to see Dredd last Saturday night. My brother and I drove my dad and left him at a concert. To kill time, he gave us cash to go eat something and watch a movie at the theaters. Choices for watching something late at night weren't great. Not all films premiere here early. But our top choices was either Ted or Dredd, but we watched Dredd after Ted got sold out.

The 5th Resident Evil film was also available, but that's the kind of film we would watch when it's on cable (and that's even pushing it).

Among the 2012 films I've seen, Dredd is better than Dark Shadows, Red Tails, and Rock of Ages. I'm sure than when I get to watch more of 2012 films, Dredd wouldn't be part of the bottom 10.

Edit: BTW, according to this list of movies premiering in Australia, I'd check out Killing Them Softly, Frankenweenie and Argo (especially Argo) before Dredd 3D premieres.

I had to look those films up. I knew of them, but didn't really know what they were about. They look like they might be okay and probably will check them sometime.

I feel like the only person who liked Dark Shadows. It was the first Burton film since like Sleepy Hollow that I enjoyed. I wasn't even expecting anything out of it either, going into it. Just watched it on a whim and laughed more times than I probably should have. Maybe I was in a good mood that night, I dunno.

Movie was a good action flick. I loved the slow motion stuff, I see why MY85 was talking about seeing it in 3D.
