I do not know how many Nintendo fans we have here, but Nintendo has just released a lot of valuable information about their next console: Wii U. All the info listed below is from GenGAME. Be sure to check out that site for more in depth info.

1) Wii U launches November 18

2) Wii U will be sold in 2 bundles.
--A) The Basic Set is a white 8GB model, that comes with the basic Sensor Bar, HDMI cables, and of course the Wii U and Wii U GamePad
--B) The Deluxe Set is a larger model at 32GB, and comes bundled with not only the stuff listed above, but a GamePad charging cradle and Nintendo Land.

3) Cost
--A) Basic bundle: $299.99
--B) Deluxe bundle: $349.99

See the two console bundles

I'm sure more information will be released later in the day, since Nintendo Direct is still in progress as I make this thread. But the release date and prices are pretty big news. I think the systems are a little pricey and wonder if they'll drop in price (similar to how the 3DS dropped in price). At the same time, however, I don't think it's a bad deal to only pay $50 more for the deluxe bundle and get 4 times more storage and a gamepad charger...oh and Nintendo Land, which I'm not really interested in.

I am very interested to see what games they'll announce. I know of a few titles already, but none of those titles make me want to go buy a new console. I'm actually more interested in seeing how they handle the Virtual Console for Wii-U. If they have a nice collection of Game Cube games, I might buy the system earlier than I expect. I have never played Zelda: Wind Waker. If that is released, I'll buy the console just for that. Otherwise, I'll probably wait until the next Zelda title is released on Wii U before buying the new console. I don't think the next Zelda game will be released until 2014, so it'll be a while for me. Probably.

Just checked GenGAME and the Australian and Europe release date is set for November 30 and the price will be higher.

GenGAME.net

Australia is getting the same release date as Europe, hitting the shelves on November 30th. That’s only twelve days after the US, which means Australia won’t have to wait patiently like they have in the past. The price was also announced, and the prices are higher, which is normal for Australian games and consoles.

The Basic Pack will be $349.95 , and the Premium Pack is priced at $429.95. The Premium Pack contains a stand for the GamePad and console, a charging cradle for the GamePad, a sensor bar and the Nintendo Land software.

The Wii U Premium Pack also features a reward programme called the ‘Nintendo Network Premium’ that grants points for digital purchases in Nintendo eShop. Valued at around 10% of the original Nintendo eShop price, this credit can be used against future purchases once you reach a minimum of 500 points.

Did they mention anything about Gamecube games being on the virtual console or is that just speculation on your part? Maybe I didn't look hard enough.

The fact that Gamecube games can't be played on this console is just a sign that they need to step up their game. The Wii was only enjoyable because I kept on playing GC games on it, and had a blast with them, in addition to the Every so often great Wii game that came along. Now that Wii U doesn't have that strength, they'll have to rely on something new, or this console will do significantly worse than the Wii.

Nintendo announced that the Wii U is only backward capable to the Wii, which means GC games cannot be played on Wii U. So the heavy speculation is that GC games will be released on Virtual Console. I don't think Nintendo has said anything absolute yet, though, so take it as hopeful speculation by many.

I can agree with this, especially about the great Wii games only coming apart every so often. Most Wii games were uninteresting to me. I didn't buy my Wii until about a year or two ago (forget, really). And MOST of my game purchases are VC downloads from N64, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and other older consoles. The Wii games that I have and play frequently, I can probably count on just one hand.

The Game Cube is the lowest selling (console) gaming system Nintendo has ever released. I have never played a single Game Cube game before. I was actually not interested in gaming at all during that entire time. I would play my N64 sometimes, but not often. And given the lower sales numbers for Game Cube, I can't be the only gamer that missed out on Game Cube games. I tried to buy a Game Cube game to play on Wii, but it wouldn't work. After getting 2 replacement discs that wouldn't work, I gave up. Plus, I'd have had to buy a GC controller and a GC memory card (which I could not find at that time). So if they release GC games, it would all be new to me. The price system for VC games is typically $5 for older games like Nintendo and $10 for newer games like N64. If they keep this pricing, I would be willing to pay maybe $15 for GC games. I have no problem paying reasonable prices for good games.

I'm a little disappointed to hear that Bayonetta 2 will be a Wii U exclusive. I was considering getting a Wii U some time down the track anyway, depending, but still disappointing nonetheless. :-/

The Gamebuce has a lot of good gems that I've recently discovered, so I'm keeping my fingers cross that Nintendo finds a way to get release GC games via virtual console. It won't be easy because of the sizes of GC games. I do plan on getting a Wii U when I'm able to. There's still a few Wii games I have yet to play, I think I'll play those on the Wii as opposed on the Wii U.

Which ones are your standout favorites? Like I said, I've never played a single GC game. I have a few in mind that I've heard other people talk about, but I'd like to know other good/great games in case Nintendo does release GC games on virtual console...which I am very hopeful they will.

The standouts of the Gamecube to me were the ones nobody really expected. The Mario and Zelda titles are for once not the shining example of why the GC was underated. Instead, it's those other franchises that sound familiar but for whatever reason never exploded with popularity.

- Timesplitters 3 Future Perfect: Awesome arcade-like FPS. Quite possibly the last of its kind, and made by the same devs that gave us Goldeneye 007. There's hundreds upon hundreds of things to unlock in this game, making my total play time dozens of hours long. And the multi-player is of course amazing. Has a great sense of humor.

- F-Zero GX: An insanely difficult game if you try to unlock everything, and yet, it is the most rewarding racing game I've ever played. No real power ups, and the story is kind of goofy, but the main focus of the game is high speed skill oriented racing, and it succeeds overwhelmingly in that aspect.

- Super Smash Bros. Melee: Okay, so maybe this one's obvious.

- Gauntlet Dark Legacy: A personal favorite of mine. If you have a few friends around this game is amazing. It's basically a dungeon crawler with strong RPG elements and a strange take on its' fantasy setting.

- Mario Kart Double Dash: Best Mario Kart game of all-time in my opinion. Maybe it didn't quite have the impact of 64, but this game gets all the mechanics perfect and there's no balancing issues like in the original and Mario Kart Wii. Also pretty damn intense when you're playing with some friends.

Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
Super Mario Sunshine
Luigi's Mansion
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2
Eternal Darkness
Star Fox Adventures
Resident Evil 0
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles

These are the games I really enjoyed, at least, and I'm not even done making my way through the catalog. Though some of the games I listed have been re-released for the Wii, so who knows if Nintendo will re-re-release them via Virtual Console if that's in the works.

GameStop’s official Wii U pre-order page confirms that reservations for the Wii U Deluxe Set are completely sold out. According to a Kotaku report from sometime yesterday evening, they’ve been out of stock for as many as 12 or so hours by now. That means that Wii U pre-orders for the Deluxe Set sold out in less than 36 hours! Pretty impressive for Nintendo hardware! I’m sure the Basic Set will be out of stock as well soon.

Everything we’ve heard about pre-sales for Wii U has sounded suspiciously like the situation with Wii six years ago. Could Nintendo have finally convinced consumers to buy the system en masse so that it becomes another Wii-like hit?

Wow, already sold out of pre-orders. You can still order the basic bundle, but who would order that when you get 4 times more memory and a charger for just $50 more. Of course, this is only at GameStop. I'm sure you can still preorder at other retail outlets. I just checked Walmart, and they still have their pre-order bundle listed. I have no interest in preordering a Wii U, though. Like I said, until they release a "must play" game for Wii U or Virtual Console (which I think is now called eShop?), then I will just patiently wait.
I wasn't playing games when Wii first came out. Where they hard to find when they first released due to high demand?

Double posting, I know, but different news item so may as well be a different post. Be sure to read the post directly above if you just jumped to the bottom of the page.

Ever since first launching their big digital push with the Nintendo eShop on 3DS, Nintendo’s been firm about all first-party Wii U games being available in downloadable form via Nintendo’s online store – even at the system’s launch. There’s one exception they hadn’t discussed before, though: games that require sold-separately accessories. Good examples include Wii Fit U, which will require a Wii Balance Board, and SiNG Party, which requires the brand-new Wii U Microphone.

Everything else, though – it’s all coming digitally as well as through traditional physical retail means.

On the flip side, Nintendo’s leaving the decision to third parties as to whether experiences from outside Nintendo’s studios will also be available for download. According to Product Marketing Manager Bill Trinen, Nintendo doesn’t want to force any third parties down that path.

Pretty cool concept. I am not sure how many games you could download onto your Wii U before you kill your memory. Unless there is a huge price difference (which I doubt), I think I'll buy physical copies of Wii U games and reserve my memory for VC games.

Ok, triple posting here. Be sure to read the previous 2 posts above if you just jump to the last post:

GenGame.net

Walmart’s online store still has Wii U in stock, but you won’t be able to ring up the traditional bundles. Instead, you’ll get the retailer’s “Solution Bundle,” which comes with not only the true blue Wii U Basic or Deluxe Set, but adds in a Wii Remote Plus and your choice of game. Of course, this also runs up the price to $399.99 for the Basic Set and $449.99 for the Deluxe Set. (Yes, the Deluxe Set still comes with Nintendo Land!)

The sad thing is, you don’t really save any money on this deal. Wii U games are $59.99, but Wii Remotes are still $39.99, which means you’d tack on $100 to get them on the side anyway.

GenGame.net

GameStop isn’t the only retailer to sell out of Wii U pre-orders. Best Buy’s online store also displays the upcoming system as “out of stock” – both Basic and Deluxe Sets. In fact, the original pre-order pages for the two sets are currently down and do not exist.

Judging by the site info, this may just apply to their online store. Check your local Best Buy to see if there are any additional pre-order slots still available. Hope you guys all slapped down deposits in the first or second day!

Source: Best Buy

So GameStop is already sold out, Best Buy is already sold out, and Walmart is starting to sell out with limited remaining. And this is just less than 2 days after the presales began? Wow. I guess the dip in popularity that Wii saw was just people frustrated in lower quality games because the demand seems to be there.

But, of course, it's hard to say how many units these stores have for preorder. Plus, this is mostly the hardcore Nintendo base making the preorders. I'm very curious to see how things go down in November and December. Will there be a mad rush to get a Wii U? Will they sell out before Christmas? Will the causal players show less enthusiasm than the hardcore Nintendo fans?

Yes, actually. Nintendo underestimated the initial popularity of the Wii and as a result were short on the supply compared to the demand. I had been trying to get it from the release in November and succeeded three months later at a Walmart where I was on vacation. And it was the last one too. I'm sure if you order online it'll be a different story, but back then it wasn't a popular option.

As I said, I don't have very many Wii games. I am interested in the New Super Mario Bros. Wii game, but it is still $50. I wonder if prices will drop when Wii U comes out. Part of me thinks yes, since Wii U is a new system and stores will quit carrying Wii stuff. Part of me says no because Wii is still compatible with Wii U and all the controllers and accessories still work with Wii U.

Wii U launched Sunday here in the USA. True to my word, I did not buy one and in all likelihood will not buy one until a Zelda title is released. If they release GameCube games on VC and release Wind Waker, I'll go buy a system that day. Same if they release a new Zelda title (which is unlikely for another year or two). But if it takes a while before any Zelda love comes to Wii U, then they need to release more titles that I'd play. Assassin's Creed 3 and Super Mario Bros U are the two games I am looking at most right now. Zombie U looks good too, but it's a first person shooter so it loses a little of my interest. I'll need at least 2 more solid games that grab my attention before I'll buy a Wii U without a Zelda title.

I've been reading fan reactions over at GenGame. Apparently, when you first buy your Wii U you have to do a huge system update in order to use most of the features on the Wii U. You can play Wii U without the update, but you cannot do anything else really without doing the update. And I'm reading it takes about 2 hours for this update to download. Plus it takes about 20 minutes to transfer your Wii content to your Wii U. So it takes about 3 hours to set everything up? You know, if you add in installing the Wii U and doing all the "turn the system on for the first time" steps where you have to create an ID etc. I'm not sure I understand why they need such a huge update on release day.

I'm not too surprised, they're always adding new things and trying to improve things. The consoles were probably packaged months ago while Nintendo was still adding improvements to the software.
