In a move sure to shock fans of the Mouse House and George Lucas, the Walt Disney Company said Tuesday it has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion in cash and stock. The company also announced that it is prepping Star Wars: Episode 7 for release in 2015.

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” Lucas, the sole shareholder of Lucasfilm, said in a press release announcing the acquisition. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers.”

With the acquisition, Disney adds one of the world’s most enduring — and most profitable — sci-fi franchises to its ever-expanding stable. Disney, which has grown from humble animation company to massive media brand, successfully roped in Pixar in 2006 and bought Marvel Entertainment in 2009 (also for a $4 billion price tag). Buying Lucasfilm, Iger said, was in line with the Marvel acquisition: The move essentially means Disney has cornered the market on superhero and sci-fi/fantasy films.

In a conference call with investors, Disney chairman Robert Iger called Lucas a “true visionary” and applauded him for building a “company at the intersection of entertainment and technology.” As part of the deal, Disney will also take control of Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound. But the most lucrative part of the deal has to be the Star Wars brand, and to that end Disney announced it would be releasing a new film from the franchise in 2015, with more to follow.

“We believe we can do great things with these amazing assets,” Iger said.

Under the agreement, Kathleen Kennedy, Steven Spielberg’s producing partner who was named co-chair of Lucasfilm in June, will become president of the company within Disney. Lucas has been discussing retirement in recent months, particularly when Kennedy’s position was announced, and even though Iger noted that Lucas will stay on as an adviser for the new Star Wars trilogy, he is moving forward toward retirement.

“This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value,” Iger said in a statement.

The boards of both Disney and Lucasfilm have approved the acquisition, but it is still subject to clearance under U.S. and international business regulations.

If that is true, the franchise may have a chance.

This could mean Luke Skywalker in Kingdom Hearts 4.

This pleases me.

What's stopping Luke and company from being in Kingdom Hearts 3? That game's still in development hell.

That and Disney will only be distributing the films. Luke Skywalker has as much chance as any of the Marvel Characters.

The fact that George Lucas won't be in full creative control gives me hope. Personally I hope he at least sticks around to be a Creative Consultant (where his real strength lies). Biggest issue with the Prequel Trilogy, IMO, was that Lucas had no outside involvement for the movies.

Deadline is reporting that the screenwriter that brought us Little Miss Sunshine and Toy Story 3 has written the three treatments for the new Star Wars Saga. Michael Arndt (whose next script is the Hunger Games: Catching Fire) had been working on the treatments before the October 30th sale to Disney. Arndt’s work on the treatments is not all he’ll do. He is also first in line to write the screenplay for Episode VII.

We now have our writer for the next chapter in the Star Wars universe.

Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine are pretty close to the top of the list for film quality during their respective release years. This gives me hope.

What he said. :tu:

BTW, Zack Snyder, Quentin Tarantino, J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg aren't interested in directing the new Star Wars film. Really glad to see Snyder not directing this, but I'm sure a few of you would have wished to see him direct it.

A new report says that the director for Star Wars: Episode VII has been found and it’s none other than J.J. Abrams. The Wrap is reporting the huge news, saying that Abrams has agreed to direct the highly-anticipated film (to say the least) after months of being courted by new Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy. Just last month, Abrams specifically said he was not going to do the film (indicating he had been asked), but as The Wrap puts it, “The lure of the Jedi was too strong.”

The Wrap goes on to say that Ben Affleck was also in contention for the Episode VII directing gig and speculate how Abrams taking the job might complicate Abrams’ relationship with Paramount, where he’s been directing the Star Trek series, with the second film in the new series, Star Trek Into Darkness, opening this summer. In addition, Abrams has been a producer on the Mission: Impossible series at Paramount, since directing the third film.

The Wrap is a very reliable source for news of this sort, and credit “an individual with knowledge of the production” as their source. They note they reached out to Lucasfilm spokeswoman Lynne Hale, who declined to immediately comment.

The one note of caution here is the recent story about Zack Snyder directing a separate, stand-alone Star Wars film, which was first reported by the also-credible Vulture – only for Snyder’s reps to say it wasn’t true, even as Vulture stood by their sources. Lucasfilm is obviously being secretive with the Star Wars films as negotiations have been going on with directors, so we’ll all be waiting to see when they officially comment on this report that Abrams is the guy making The Movie We’re All Waiting For.

Latino-Review is reporting that Harrison Ford is indeed reprising his role of Han Solo in Star Wars Episode VII.

IF this fact is indeed true, it is the first step in solidifying the return of every other major actor needed.

What? I thought they were going to make the next few Star Wars chapter completely unrelated to the Skywalker story?

Maybe it's just a cameo? In some lone scene in the movie, maybe Han and Chewie pop up for a few lines of dialogue and then move on? I mean, Lucas is still involved in some capacity so cameos and nods are to be expected.

I just hope it doesn't end up being a continuation of the Skywalker story or totally destroys the extended universe canon of what happens post-movies, much like they destroyed the Clone Wars canon for their cartoon show.

In a move sure to please die-hard original Star Wars fans, Mark Hamill confirmed Star Wars talks with George Lucas.

Director J.J. Abrams is set to head up the next three films in the Star Wars universe with a tentative release date set for 2015, and, if the job he did with the Star Trek reboot in 2009 is any indication, things are looking good for his upcoming Star Wars treatment.

Mark Hamill, who many readers know from the original trilogy as Luke Skywalker, recently confirmed that he was indeed approached by George Lucas about reprising his role as the famous Jedi in the upcoming films.

In a recent interview with ET Online, Hamill said:

“George [Lucas] wanted to know whether we’d be interested. He did say that if we didn’t want to do it, they wouldn’t cast another actor in our parts – they would write us out. … I can tell you right away that we haven’t signed any contracts. We’re in the stage where they want us to go in and meet with Michael Arndt, who is the writer, and Kathleen Kennedy, who is going to run Lucasfilm. Both have had meetings set that were postponed — on their end, not mine. They’re more busy than I am.”

Aside from the decision whether or not to sign on for another Star Wars film, Hamill also mentioned that he was curious as to whether or not the other actors from the original trilogy would be making their return to the franchise as well. He expressed sentiment that he would rather see everyone back on board for the new films rather than just one. Harrison Ford is even rumored to be reprising his role as Han Solo in the upcoming film.

Ugh.

I mean, I love the cast from the original but... it's a bit late to reprise their roles. None of them who didn't have a total body suit (like Chewie or Threepio) except maybe Ford look like they could be believable in their roles. A Master Jedi like Luke would not look like Mark Hamill unless he ran into another rancor and it didn't work out as well the second time. And Leia? Leia is also a Jedi in the EU and any Jedi that lets themselves look like Fisher nowadays... that Jedi isn't trying very hard at life.

Just start a brand new chapter from scratch like the rumors originally said. I don't want to see a rehash of the old characters. It's just going to be sad for everyone and more likely to frustrate people than a brand new story would (which would be guaranteed to frustrate a lot of people, too).

I suspect that the old characters will be there to pass the torch to the younger characters like Nimoy did in Star Trek. I don't see the movies focusing on the old cast.

I hope not.

As I was typing the last message, I was wondering if Luke would appear via hologram or something like that. They could digitally make him look appropriate but still use his likeness and voice that way.

Eh....

I don't think this man could pass for a Master Jedi, even if he's covered in a big robe with nothing but his chin showing.

But at least he looked in shape (for his species).

Mark Hamill looks like he hasn't done anything remotely athletic since the early 80s.

It's especially bad since Luke Skywalker is supposed to look like this and this in his later years... not like what Mark Hamill looks like now.

He looks like a drawing? How many times must we go through this? Movies trump all your video games, cartoons, books and comics. Come to terms with it and live your life.

Luke Skywalker fat, saggy, and out of shape?

Not in my Star Wars. :hmmp:

P.S. If the movies trump everything else, then I would have loved to see how you would've reacted had they gone with Jack Black as the Green Lantern like they were originally rumored to do.

I saw that rumor when it first came out. Why would a GL movies change anything about Star Wars? Star Wars was a movie first that people then parlayed into other mediums. So, the movies are the original cannon and story. GL is a comic book character. Movies, TV shows etc mean nothing in the scheme of those characters. But, you knew that.

Whatever the canon for the Green Lantern in the comics is would only matter to the comic book fans. To the casual audience, the Green Lantern would have been Jack Black had he gone with it. As far as most people would be concerned, what they would have seen would have been canon with any comic book fans complaints falling deaf ears. It doesn't matter what comes first. It matters about which receives the most attention as far as most people are concerned.

And yes, the same would and does apply to Star Wars, which is exactly why I don't want to see some out-of-shape Luke Skywalker showing up when it would not make any sense for a Grand Master Jedi of Luke's caliber to look like a guy who hasn't done anything physical in the last twenty years and has aged terribly in general. Having that be the image people think of when they think of an old Luke Skywalker is not something that would benefit anyone and, if anything, would just look sad.

Until J.J. Abrams, Disney and Lucasfilm actually announce who will be starring in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII we will continue to hear a seemingly-endless stream of casting rumors - and that continues today. Following up on their claims that actors like Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Ryan Gosling and Zac Efron have been looked at for roles in the new Star Wars film, Latino Review is now saying that the production is now considering actors Alex Pettyfer and Rachel Hurd-Wood for roles in the sci-fi movie.

Posted Image

While the site doesn't have any information regarding the character that Pettyfer is going out for, their guess is that he is trying out for the part of Luke Skywalker's son (which, mind you, isn't a character that has been confirmed to be in the movie). What's more, the site adds that Gosling wound up turning down the part he was "offered," which is what may have opened the door to Pettyfer being called in.

But while the site's sources don't seem to have any confirmed details about the character that Pettyfer is looking to play, they are a bit more specific about Hurd-Wood's potential part. The rumor says that she has gone in to read for the "daughter of Princess Leia (and presumably Han Solo)." The article stresses that the actress doesn't have the part yet (a part that may or may not actually exist), but adds that she is the only one who has gone in thus far.

Is there a great disturbance in the force? The Hollywood Reporter thinks that there might be. Last week we learned that Academy Award winning screenwriter Michael Arndt had exited Star Wars: Episode VII. JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan had taken over the screenwriting duties for the long awaited project. With that news a tad disconcerting, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the project is looking to escape from their hard 2015 release date.

“According to those close to the project, producer Kathleen Kennedy and most of the film's creative team have asked Disney to push the release to 2016, but studio CEO Robert Iger is adamant that Episode VII -- perhaps the franchise's most anticipated installment since 1999's The Phantom Menace -- not budge. That has created enormous pressure on all involved, with director J.J. Abrams stepping in to take over scripting duties with Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote 1980's Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, considered the best film in the series”.

However, other sources are saying that “Abrams has become autocratic in recent months, wresting some casting control from Kennedy. But others disputed that notion, saying Abrams and Kennedy both have been involved in casting sessions. Unlike Kennedy, Abrams is said to be more in sync with Iger's desire to meet the 2015 release target -- which allows zero margin for error -- at all costs”.

I'm glad for the new writing team.
